This is a video showing the painting of a silk scarf using the Serti technique. A resist is used to outline the drawing, and then silk dyes are "painted" onto the silk to make the design come to life.. Thank you for the comment! I add the colors to wet silk or the newly added color creates hard edges rather than blending with the prior color.

Thx! Few questions..I've done on cotton and rayon I wove plain weave and twill, very fine and used same method but no drying in between. I let it rest 24 hrs, wrapped in plastic, and washed out I think. No drying in-between.didnt steam I don't think
Thanks! Different dyes have different requirements for setting the colors. It might be that you used a different dye. I will need to try other methods.
Which threads have you used to tie the scarf fabric to the pole
Thanks for the question. I used paracord on this one, but different cords/rope produce different effects.

I love your scarf and the colors, but I have few questions, what dye exactly do you use and how do you steam it - over a boiling pot? and how long do you steam it for? how do you wash it with soap and water still on the pipe?
Thank you! I use both Jacquard and DuPont dyes. I steam the scarf in a homemade steamer using a vent pipe from the hardware store. I place it in a large pot and steam for 3 hours. Once steamed, I wash it on the pole and let it fully dry before I remove it.
Have you tried making layered colours, for example inside the folds would be a lighter colour like yellow, and the outer parts would be blue? I am very interested in learning how to do this, but can't find any tutorials for it.
Hi. I have done that and basically used the same process when it is a light base color and a darker second color. There is a process for wrapping the scarf then removing the top color with a chemical and then dying it again with another color but I have not done that yet.

Gorgeous! This scarf is beautiful! I prefer the pleats left in the scarf. What would you need to do to keep the pleats permanently? I've never been interested in doing tie dye or Shibori or any other silk painting technique other than actual painting fine art on silk. Yet, from this scarf alone I want to try it!!! You mentioned in this video that the steps you took before the reveal to get this scarf was in another video. I've looked at all of your videos and I'm unable to find it. Could you help, please? Thanks!! On the channel, there is a video of me making a blue Shibori that gives all the steps. It really is a lot of fun. If the scarf is dry cleaned it should keep its pleated as long as the do not iron it.
Hi again! 👋 Your scarves are very pretty. You have definitely worked so hard to get the snake scale effect! To transfer your 'scales' to the silk without having to undo the taut scarf from the frame, you can use book(s) and then a flat piece of cardboard or something smooth. Put the book(s) on the table and then the smooth cardboard (or whatever you have that's smooth). Then put your silk and frame over the book(s)/smooth item. Make sure the silk in the frame is put on the smooth item so the silk is boosted up just a bit. Then take your scale "grill" with resist on it and press it onto the silk. Ta-da! I sure hope I've explained it clear enough. If not, please email me and I'll send some pics or a video! My email: Chirhosilkstudio@gmail.com 🙂 In another video you told me you used both Red Label and DuPont Silk Dyes. Have you tried using either Jacquard's No Flow or DuPont's Anti-Fusant? If you use these you'll decide the degree of "looseness". You won't need to use resist to keep the dyes where you want them. These 2 items turn silk into 'paper' and dyes into watercolor! I've only been a silk painter for almost 10 years, whereas I've been a watercolorist for over 23 years. If you haven't tried one or both of them and you're interested in at least some type of control (like me😉) you should try them! I hope you do and I hope you make a video, lol! Have you thought about combining your snakeskin with the Shibori technique? Or, instead of using the resist to make the scales maybe use the rope or sinew to criss-cross the silk? I've never done Shibori so I could just be 'talking nonsense', but it's an idea. BTW, how did your sister like the scarf? Does she wear it? If yes, you could tell her that she's just like Britney Spears...snake around her neck😉lol! God Bless 😃

Hi! Your piece turned out beautiful! I used to use Jacquard Red Label Silk Dyes (I use DuPont Silk Dyes now) which turned out fine. The Jacquard Green Label Silk Dyes can be both steamed and chemically set (I'm sure you know all of this🙂). The Red Label has a deeper and more vibrant color once steamed. I did not get the same for the Green Label Dyes. Which Dyes are you using? I'm so happy I found your channel! I've subscribed 🙂 🙃 🙂

Hi, do you let completely to dry between colors when you bring inside to dry under the air conditioner?
Hello. I let the base coat fully dry and then wrap the scarf. All the other colors are put on at the same time in layers and then I let it dry. Hope this helps.

Hello. It is a polyester cord made for bracelet making. I buy it at Michaels. There are a lot of people that use cotton cord but I find the polyester works best.
Hello! You have no idea how hard was for me to watch the video to the end. I am just like your sister. I am very afraid of S… I can’t look at magazines, tv, etc… I love gardening but I have to make a prayer when I have to go out to make sure I am protected when I am outside. I am from Brazil, and down there we do have big ones an venenosas!!!! I live in Andover Massachusetts. I’ll try to make it. Have you thought about to use the chicken wire? Xox Eva
Thanks for the comment! I always keep an eye out when in the garden and have seen a few snakes…I just don’t tell her or she would never go into the yard at all! And she really did not like the scarf :) I had thought about chicken wire but worried it might snag the silk. If you give it a try please let me know how it comes out.

That's what I do, see or think of a design, and then figure out a way to dye it on silk. I never thought of using polymer clay as a stamp. I have printed resists on with leaves, stenciled through cut out snowflakes, splattered them on with a toothbrush, lots of possibilities. You might like my leaf printing video.

Thank you! The pleats will stay in if you dry clean it. If you hand wash it they will come out or become softer.
What did you steam set it with?

What sort of cord do you use to wrap around the silk? It looks very shiny like it might be a nylon or synthetic cord, but I would have thought that would slip, so wonder if I'm wrong. Thank you!
Thanks for the question. I have tried a lot of different cords, both natural fiber and synthetic. I find synthetic works best for me. I believe the cord I used for this scarf is a thin nylon Parachute Cord that I buy at Michaels. It is in the jewelry making supplies.

Amazing work! what is the resist/black lines used to separate the colors if I may ask?
I have tried many resists, but my favorite by far is Resistad Water Based Gutta from Jacquard. It is a clear resist that I mix with dye to get the colors. It dyes really well and holds its lines. I get my supplies from Dharma Trading.

Once this is done.. are the colors set? Or will they continue to bleed out in washing?
Thank you for the comment. I steam set the scarf which sets the colors. Once steamed, I wash and rinse the scarf while it is still wrapped on the pole until the water runs clear (this requires several rinses) and then let it dry on the pole. Once dry, I unwrap it from the pole, and there will be pleats. To keep the pleats, I dry clean the scarf, but you can wash it and iron flat as well. For the washes after the initial wash, there will be a very small amounts of color in the wash water but it is natural for this to happen with silk and does not hurt the scarf. I hand wash, or dry clean, my silk scarfs.
