David Tong - aged nine, he performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and at 12 won the Keyboard section of the Symphony Australia Young Performers Award. After winning scholarships to the prestigious Melbourne Grammar and Melbourne University, where he studied with Stephen McIntyre, he won another award to study at the Juilliard School in New York.

It's so sad to hear he passed away recently. I was lucky enough to hear him sing Loge in Das Rheingold with Simone Young & Sydney Symphony last year, and he did such a phenomenal job. He will be missed.

*Explains a lot. My grandmother, born in 1918, named my mom Melba. Then my mom named me Melba and I named my daughter Melba as well. My maiden name is Mitchell as well. Crazy as it sounds, I use to work at a bread factory that made Melba toast. And to top it off I'm a little song bird myself.*

Very interesting. Nellie Melba was related to my Great Grandmother. They were cousins. Melba is written up in my family tree. Ruth Mitchell's ( Broadway producer and stage manager) mother and my grandmother were first cousins. Ruth Mitchell is also written in my family tree and was related to Nellie Melba. I wonder if you and I are related.

Thank you for your support Patricia. I certainly seem to be out of favour with the ABC at the moment; don't know why, maybe because I believe in melody!! Maybe some day in the future I will be heard again on our national carrier. In the meantime I am very grateful that many people around the world appreciate my music. I do receive heart felt emails often highlighting a particular sentiment that may appeal to them. This warms my heart.

Steve is one of the best tenors and will reach the greatest heights--yes, he's the 21st century Fritz Wunderlich. It has been my greatest joy knowing him over many years. We first met at Sydney Opera House some 20 years when I heard him sing THE 4 LAST SONGS of Richard Strauss. His rendition of Winterreise in Melb at the National Acadmey of Music was a glorious success. See you soon Steve in Melb. Warmest wishes

Richard Bonynge has received a lot of unjust criticism over years, I guess mainly because he became the exclusive conductor for just about all Joan Sutherland's performances after the early 60's. Though I would have wished she had engaged other conductors at times IMO he was and I guess maybe still is a very very good conductor within the repertoire he loves.
