ALBUM RELEASE: Zār: Songs for the spirits
Recordings of live rituals and studio sessions. This album presents all three varieties of zār practised in Egypt today. Double LP gatefold with extensive liner notes to bring you right into zār gathering.
jujusounds.bandcamp.com/album/zar-songs-for-the-spirits
Zār is a possession cult practised on the outskirts of the rapidly modernising societies of North Africa and the Middle East. It’s a phenomenon that crosses not only geographical boundaries but also those determined by the rational mind. The boundaries here are not clearly defined; multiple worlds intertwine. Zār cant be enclosed in a single frame. If needed it could be perceived as a healing practice. However, the first stage of dealing with illness is always diagnosis, which in zār is made using music...
JuJu Sounds travelled to Egypt to experience, record and share with you this well hidden culture. This album presents all three varieties of zār still practised today. Hypnotic rhythms and mesmerising melodies were recorded not only in studio but also live during hadra - weekly zār ceremonies. Sound recordings and in depth liner notes offer absolutely unique insight into zār micro-communities in the Nile Delta and Cairo. Each of them is slightly different, but they all function as self-sufficient systems, remaining practically invisible in mainstream culture.
The album is complemented with recorded videos and a full story providing an in depth insight into zār culture.
Vinyl and CD available via bandcamp (shipping from the EU and USA) and only a handful of shops worldwide.
JuJu Sounds collates field recordings and stories about music from all corners of the globe. The peripheral music genres, rhythms and melodies accompanying everyday life, and the practices related to transcendental experiences, initiation and ritual. Joyful dance or deep trance in which the transfer of knowledge takes place through the body, not through mental images. Music as an experience. he musical cultures inspiring a sense of dignity and belonging.
JuJu Sounds focuses on building bridges between musicians from marginalised communities and niche audiences from around the world. The mission here is to revive valuable musical ecosystems, not just to sell exotic products.

What is maloya? Is it an exotic „heritage” videoclip from the southern islands? Kind of pure, traditional experience for those who prefer idealistic visions over reality? Perhaps it is a vehicle for creole social and political excuses? What kind of filter do you intend to apply? There are so many different maloyas. The one presented today is very simple and straight forward. Its current. Its re...

A spiritual adventurer, one of the first women to sing maloya, accomplished artist recognized worldwide. Another improvised session with Christine Salem was recorded under the shade of a big camphor tree - a fact important to mention considering artists vast knowledge of local medicinal flora. The tree provided protection not only from the sun but also from strong gusts of wind. Another tropica...

Christine Salem is one of the most internationally acclaimed artist from Reunion island. We met in her house in St Denis just before she left the island for another tour. Lelin Gado & group in session. Sweet but intense maloya of the famous Gado family from St Paul / Reunion. Well protected from easterly winds and storms, west coast of the island is tranquil and serene. Coconut trees and the black volcanic sands encircling St Paul bay witnessed the very first human landing on the island. They have witnessed it all. Serenity perfectly fused together with drama. S...

„So your focus is traditional music?” - we were asked a few times already. It may be a good occasion today to answer this question... First of all we do not recognise the concept of „traditional music”. As with all concepts it serve some purpose. Thats a broad subject so not getting into to many details.. Music cultures have never been something fixed to time and space, something that can descr...

Maloya is a fire. Charged with energy songs form hours long sets open to anyone who can sing or play. Songs belong to creole culture and most of them are well known to all participants. You do not come here to give concert but to be part of it. You would sing, keep a rhythm for few minutes on the rouler, than bash the drumsticks on the sati or piquer to end up dancing with kayamb in your hands....

our ancestors we the Hyksos fellahin Fulani fella fallasas fula or fulbe the name depends on the country we live in, are largely nomadic and semi-nomadic and live in the semi-arid climate of Africa. The Fulani are the largest nomadic group in the world and there are approximately 80,000,000 Fulani worldwide. Origins and spread of the Fulani (Hyksos) They existed before Jacob they ruled part of Egypt and gave their daughter hajiratu to Abraham that name hajiratu still exist among the fulani. The Islamization of Egypt took place after the Arab conquest of Egypt in the 7th century , during which the Islamic Rashidun Caliphate took control of Egypt from the Christian Byzantine Empire. The Fulani were among the first Africans to convert to Islam. Between the 8th and 14th centuries, the Fulani had produced a class of Muslim clerics, the Torodbe and the futankebe, who undertook proselytizing activities across Africa.
