NX1 Increased Dynamic Range for Video? New Settings
The method described within the video may lead to an increase in dynamic range for the Samsung NX1. I have done no real-world testing and I am also uncertain as to the affect on colour range and banding. Apart from the changes described within all other settings affecting exposure were as standard, 0-255, black level 0 etc.

My second visit to the Parc Floral De La Colline in Caen, Normandy, France. This time I filmed with a Samsung NX1 and a Tamron Adaptall 2 80-210 (103A) lens (manual focus and exposure). Grab a glass of something nice, turn up the volume, turn out the lights, and indulge in 7 minutes of relaxing video and sound.

Shot at the Parc Floral de la Colline in Caen, Normandy, France in late season (30th September). This was basically a test for the newly purchased lens, which worked well considering it is over thirty years old. Focus is manual (which was challeng...

Hi, where did you find the adapter ring?
Is there still a need for an adapter for this one?
I've been struggling to find lenses for my NX200
What type and where did you get the adaptall to nx adapter?
Wow what a beautiful video
How to access the macro mode on this lens? Is .9 m the macro ?

When you are using exposure compensation it means any other settings are going to get adjusted, try this in manual mode, you wont get the same results, you get less details, clipping of highlights, not worth it.
You forgot to mention what settings were made, if any, to the Master Black Level and Luminance level.
In my testing I have found that using less than 1 for RGB values increases shadow detail. However, whites are clipping, they are clipping at a lower IRE value than 100 though. That is why your scopes are not peaking, but the whites hit a hard wall. Look at the histogram at 1:42. The shadows have great range, but there are virtually no highlights, only brief white range. The first custom test with EV0 avoids this because it is actually underexposed despite what metering tells you, and the point at which it clips is above the highlights in the shot.
I read your comment with interest. So what would be your ideal settings suggestion.
Thanks for a video! It's very intricate. And after this manipulations what do you think better works with shadows and highlights - a6300 or nx1 ? I'm about to buy one of these cameras but very complicated
only idiots make sharpness to negative number. you ruining video quality! Samsung nx1 is NOT sharp it's details. not sharpness. why make good video look like soap opera from canon?
I'm not call these people idiots :), but I really don't understand why on earth people drop sharpness... It is not sharpness it is detail, as you said it. The sharpness on this camera is what makes this camera the best camera out there... or... if you like less detailed video, than you should shoot in 1080p, and then upscale it to 4K, it will spare you storage on your memory card, or maybe you should buy the new Canon M50...
If you look into it, most cameras add artificial sharpening to their images. Sharpening can be great when you are looking to shoot and post. But if you need to edit and put something together with accurate color, good dynamic range and yes sharpness/contrast and detail, you need the flexibility of Log - which in other cameras allows users to do what this video is trying to replicate. This allows editors to bring back the details, sharpness and contrast as well as the best possible color. It is much more work but necessary when trying to match higher end cameras or looks. In other words it’s meant for professionals not the everyday user.
you get detail with true sensor resolution and lens quality. Not by in camera digital sharpening. Cinema details are amazing because they use incredible lens and they know the areas of the lens where it's best. Also they know at which aperture it's really sharp. That's imho how you get real details : Real sensor resolution, and great use of a good lens.
Could you do a more detailed review? Are you a writer on Shutter, F and iso values?
Very nice! Just curious - what setting have you used?
hi paul hands down is the lens a good buy
This is an amazing film that captures the coast of Normandy and the all important WW II memorial (at least a bit of it, there are several). My clip focused more on the cathedral in Bayeux and the village.
Hey Paul, is that the lens you used to shot that video? www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/sherwood/lenses/85-210mm-f4-5-bbar-multi-coated-telephoto-lens-macro-focusing-/1119375502
Hi Rafal, the lens used for this video is the Tamron Adaptall 80~210mm F/3.8-4 (103A): www.adaptall-2.com/lenses/103A.html. This lens is highly under-rated and can be had cheap on eBay. Cheers.
awesome !
Great work!!
Catchy tune, simple but really nice!
Nice job i liked my NX1000
Hi Paul, A superb montage! I was at the service with James and other family and friends (I appear in the pics in Montchap looking hot and bothered!). Do you have any other photos from that day? We were standing in the background so were out of it as far as photos were concerned! Cheers, Martin
Myself and my friends attended as we were staying at St Martin des because
I attended (and laid a wreath) as a representative of Muir Findlay and my late father Alistair Fleming, both of whom served in "S" Squadron, 3rd Tank Battalion Scots Guards, 6th Guards Tank Brigade. I found the ceremony most enjoyable, together with the evening celebrations at Montchamp and hope to return at some point in the future to pay my respects ! Malcolm Fleming (mrfleming@btinternet.com) I would very much like to use this clip on the website that I have devoted to my father and his comrades www.flemingfamily.co.uk/alistairfleming
Hi Malcolm, I have sent you an email.
