Carrier Ductless P4 Error
Переглядів 35 тис.5 років тому
This is raw field video of a Carrier ductless OD unit service call. In this video, the equipment has been serviced prior by other technicians. This equipment exhibited a P4 error code on the head inside (high wall). Recommendations were made by others but failed to check the most basic, refrigerant charge. I apologize in advance for video stabilization, feature was toggled off.

Inlet air screen on water heater POPULAR VIDEO!!
Hi. I had a customer that had a condensate pump fail and the safety didn't work. They had the R&G wires to the safety but it didn't shut down the furnace so I'm assuming it wasn't programmed into the thermostat. However it was a different infinity thermostat, the rectangle one. Is the programming the same in that one?
@@richardfossani6421 Correct, it is a feature that must be enabled in the settings on the thermostat (user interface) to provide response to those terminals (R&G) being hooked to a normally open switch or a normally closed switch.
Is the stat your referring to the older soft screen or the newer (hard glass) screen, like a cell phone . Enter settings by holding down the service hat icon for about 5-10 seconds.
Great video! Thanks for the share!
@@seanday6127 Very happy this helped you. !!!!!
I have this Carrier Infinity t-stat and I’m in Florida w/ 105 heat index. System will ramp up to keep house cool. After an hour of full ramp-up the system will just shut off. After 10 to 15 min it will come back on and operate, but with fan on low. My system does not send a notification/message. The drain line does not have a P-trap on it, so I feel the vacuum from the air-handler ramping at full speed causes water to not drain and trips the float switch. Would a P-trap solve for this problem?
I had to watch this with no audio. Is there any reason you would use this instead of breaking "D" with a normally closed float switch on a Carrier Infinity communicating system?
Using the R&G as designed allows for logging of this circuit in the event history. Breaking a comm wire for the switch will lump any “trips” of this switch as a “loss of communication”. Breaking a power wire to stat allows it to log nothing. Simply put using the R&G terminals with infinity control allows for a service to look at event history and be able to tell exactly, “that float switch opened up at 8:43 am on this date” Helps in diagnosing odd ball problems and advanced troubleshooting .
@@HvacExpert Thank you, I figured logging and the alert was the primary benefit. Do you know of a way for the Infinity to send a dehum request signal to close a relay and bring on a standalone dehumidifier, ideally with the Air handler or furnace fan?
@@ChristopherMundahl It has been requested by many, but not available as of yet. The communication between control and equipment is proprietary and not within’ carriers sites at this time. It has been proven a very good system to use of dehumidification on a side note. I have won many bets to say, turn on overcooking to dehumidify, set your ac temp 3 degrees higher than you normally run your ac, set humidity set point at 50% and most of the time, the infinity system works as a whole house dehumidifier much better than a stand alone unit. These are features built into the infinity (carrier,Bryant) control systems.
@@HvacExpert gotcha. Yeah I confirmed with Carrier tech support earlier today. They should build a relay board to control 24vac relays like what Trane has for their communicating systems. I live in the 2nd most humid climate zone. Also sometimes people want to save energy versus using the reheat feature. I do agree that these variable speed that can turn down to 25% capacity and runing really low blower speeds for dehumidification work well versus single stage.
@@HvacExpert I actually broke Transformer wire to board with float switch because G is the only missing terminal... the thermostat boots up quick I don't care about logging
Currently diagnosing g terminal shutdown during winter without any condensate. Now jumping. One float on condensate pipe, one float (microswitch) on pan in series. Do the pan switches actually fail? More frequently than controller board?
The safety circuit wiring or devices are more likely to fail than the motherboard. Unhook both sides of safety circuit at R and G terminals, Jump R&G at board with wire, if fault clears than it is wiring/devices. Be sure the “G terminal” setup selection has been made for a “Closed” circuit vs “Open Circuit” as the safety circuit is designed to be a closed one. The fault should auto clear once R&G have been jumped. LMK
@HVAC VLOG Yes. Settings downgraded to alert from shutdown. From what I see monitored when blower is on. More likely to see it during continuous low fan operation. Less often when at away, and fan is auto. I suspect float switch it intermittent.
Actually, maybe hard to know when alert is "cleared". I assume that when there is an event in the log, but not displayed on the thermostat, it is cleared.
@@hpanken Correct on cleared if in log but not active.
Leaving jumper on, 3 weeks later. 2 alerts with light furnace usage (55°). Turned furnace up to 74°, 10 more alerts over night. Controller bad? Anything else to look at?
I bought a used thermostat and this was set to on; but I did not have the floating switch install in my system. You save my day by just disable it. Thank you.
Same here!

Needing help reseting mine we just moved Into our house and need to reset our thermostat itself all together any help is much appreciated. Its like my phone screen I've never used a digital thermostat before. Thanks
Are you trying to reset due to a problem such as internet connectivity? Errors on screen or other, I ask as resetting the Infinity thermostat without pulling every single parameter first is not recommended. After reset it will go through a re-install that cannot be bypassed, basically “Brick” the system until electronic setup is complete. There are many default but also many custom airflow settings, equipment parameters that again, I very rarely do this onsite, to think back, I cannot remember ever doing a full reset as there is not much achieved and never fixes a problem. Let me know if you are having a specific issue and I will try to walk you through. I will end by saying, all custom settings, adjustments and advanced parameters are ALL accessible by Entering the advanced service menu’s by holding down the service hat icon for approx 10-15 seconds, it will turn green when you can let go and the screen will go to advanced settings. Again, I wouldn’t change much in there unless you find out for sure what It means first. ~Regards
@@HvacExpert I am trying to hook wif to ot to be able to use the my infinity app because we live upstairs and the thermostat is downstairs and it would make it easier threwout the night to adjust the system and not bother others while they are sleeping.
@@HvacExpert I need code info for the system to be able to set up and register our unit.
Resetting will not remove or aid in hooking up wifi or remote connectivity I promise. First is to be sure that infinity has wifi, not all do, to tell, skip down into these instructions to find wireless information first, if it is not on second option screen, i.e no wireless icon, , your stat is not capable of wireless connectivity. If you have an wireless version of the infinity stat, then your next step is to connect the thermostat to your wifi in the home. Navigate to wireless options, and it is step by step to “connect wifi”. Let me know if you have any problems. After wifi is connected to your home router, the next step is to go to the website address that is in the “registration information” , on a tablet or computer, phone is not recommended. there are a few websites so you should land on carrier website, if not just google the page or let me know you can’t find it. Once there you have to create a free account. Next you can click option to “add location”. This will be your home, name and call it what you want in the appropriate field. After the location added, you can “add system”. This is where you will input information from your thermostat. **(If this option is not there, you do not have wifi version of this stat) Go to your stat, go to second page of options under the icon ”menu” , lower right corner. Navigate to Wireless, or wifi, depends on software version, there you will find “registration information”. Use your phone and take a screenshot of it as this is the info you need to enter into “add system”. Once the system is added to your location, it can be controlled from there on the computer interface or from the app on your phone. If you did have wireless capability, and created location but in “add system” you get an error that system is already registered, then the prior owner, must go to their infinity and remove or de-register the system from their account, before it will let you add it. Carrier infinity is not to difficult as just like all others, it has these steps.
@@HvacExpert thanks so much I really appreceiate the help. I will be trying this tomorrow. 😃
I did this several times it’s still beeping!
Beeping on touch or just randomly. This vid is how to reset the maintenance reminder for first few generations of infinity touch. Does your stat have a “soft” screen or hard glass like your cell phone, ty
@@HvacExpert its a newer infinity I finally figured it out I had to unplug it a few time and taped the screen on the furnace itself and it reset the service maintenance for 365 days
You should be able to turn the system maintenance off. The newer stats have this option in advanced settings. To gain access to the advanced settings press and hold e “Aerco e hat” for approx 15 seconds until it turns green, let go. Then look for system maintenance option to toggle off or change frequency. If you are unable to find it I will run a simulator to find it for you when I get back to my office tmrw. System maintenance notice will not stop it from heating. If you are having that problem.
Awesome, Great job. Haven’t seen a screen on the actual furnace it’s self.
FINALY ! Nobody knows how to run this thing, and the App is horrible. I turned off Smart Setback and Smart Recovery! Thank God.
I have replaced the drain tube(which was clogged). How do i tell the system that the problem is solved? Im getting the auxiliary input G alert constantly
Once the circuit is closed it will reset automatically. Check to be sure there is no other devices in the circuit wired in series. If the drain pan switch is electronic, it may have internally failed. The circuit between G and R must be closed (jump out to diagnose).
@@HvacExpert thanks for the response. Here is the issue. Personally, i’m not knowledgeable enough in this to completely understand. I had a hvac tech out here today for an hour and he could not determine the issue, wants to speak to a carrier tech to follow up. Now, he did jump the wires in his efforts to isolate the issue but still didn’t arrive at a reason. What, exactly should we be looking for or doing once we have jumped the wires? Im missing something in the logic i think.
If he was able to get the error/message/alert to automatically disappear after he jumped the (R) and (G) terminals together, then whatever is hooked to those wires as a safety, has either failed, has a broken wire, or, is actually working and detecting a proper shutdown. The circuit between G and R is meant to be a (closed) circuit when everything is okay, when water or whatever is being monitored is detected, the circuit (opens) and “G-terminal alert” is generated. So, we know the board is okay and that correct circuit option is selected in the infinity setup as the alert is gone after he jumped it. The focus is on the “external” devices connected to R and G. Double/triple check the drain. Pour water down it (like a gallon, it should take it without backing up, and make sure it is not airlocking and require a “vent” to allow it to drain. Make sure the outlet is not freezing, or any other part of the drain and only happening when temps drop below 32. By the way, since he jumped out a “safety”, keep an eye on it so you do not “find out” water is backing up the bad way, water damage. Double check the wiring, ohm the wires out with a meter, ohm the switch(s) connected in series to R and G, should be closed circuit. If one of the safeties is an electronic type, you may have a rare event happening that is hard to catch as you may be tripping a limit in the equipment during operation. External switches that require power are powered from the board by tech’s in the field, so, with carrier, when a limit trips internally it will drop out power at the board, hence dropping out power to the electronic safety (wet switch) and cause the switch to trip. That may have been deep there, to help, are you getting this notification on your phone or popping up on the thermostat. Be sure the tech is entering the fault/service history in the thermostat, so to tell if the “g-terminal” fault is happening at the same time as another fault, as that is the trick to determine if this rare event is happening or not. Be sure air filter is clean/new - Vents open/returns not blocked by couch (etc). Ill let that all sink in for a bit. Let me know if assistance is required as the prior carrier rep and myself work well together, lol. Have good luck!
Any way you could tell me why the touch screen only works / acknowledges my selection every 27th time I touch the damn thing? This is my grandmother's thermostat. I'm sure it needs a update but I cannot find the correct instructions for this model.
Look for “calibration” in the settings section of the display. It aligns touch to the corners. There are a few versions of this controller. One with hard screen like a cell phone and one with soft “feeling” screen. The soft one being the oldest. This version was prone to static electricity taking out the display completely but still functions. This controller also can be reset but not advised unless you pull the advanced settings (trick to getting into) out first as resetting will return those to default and the infinity system has many custom set points for proper operation. This I would try to find a company to look at or a friend to help with. LMK if you find display calibration in the settings and if hat helps.
I saw you there
Just discovered the same thing on my horizontal unit. Temps were 88 outside today and unit set to 72 was cooling down to about 74-75. Accumulator in condenser outside was completely iced. Filter was just changed a month ago and still looked good. Delta T was about 18 degrees, so I didn’t think low refrigerant level. Open up the air handler and this is what I saw. You just use a spray adhesive to fix it?
Yes the spray can type. I never trust it though and put a piece of Slock or Drive cleat from front to back to keep it pinned back away from the coil. Good job!!!
@@HvacExpert yeah I was thinking since it failed before it would probably need a more mechanical way of keep it up, thanks for the advice.
By the time most companies find this, in my experience, it has escalated to a new unit. Good catch as technicians should be able to identify this as a possibility by looking at their gauges. Merely presents it’self as an airflow issue on indoor coil.. Again, nice catch.
@@HvacExpert It was the normal delta T that led me toward an airflow issue. My unit is not even 7 years old, and I really didn’t think it was going to be a dirty coil but I figured I need to take a look. Pretty obvious on the horizontal unit as it was right in my face.
I believe I actually had a blocked condensate pipe. I since (may have) unclogged it now as I at least see water dripping out slowly now (none before at 85 degrees today). How do you clear the code so my unit kicks back on here? Thanks man.
Exactly what I wanted to know, thanks !
Thanks for this walkthrough super helpful!
Yeah, i think that compressor might be a little bit mad about not having any oil.
Weak sauce
I will assume this is for the newest generation as well. Stumped our tech reps on this.
I will run a simulator to make sure, however our techs did not report an error on this video and its used for up to date training. Should be good.
@@HvacExpert I had 3 today that, should I still be employed at this company, I will see if this worked.
Good stuff brotha keep the videos comming ☝
Hey Matt, great vids. My Carrier Inf Tch Control as in this vid is only displaying 99 degrees for indoor temp. Unit works great both ac and heat pump. But 99 degrees in display is stuck. All other touch screen controls work fine. Any ideas?????? Thanks!
NotMyGuns , I would believe the thermistor on the board that is responsible for room temp, has become disconnected or is open . “Failed”. Be sure it has not updated recently, it would have to have been connected to wifi, or manually done. As carrier added a wireless room sensor option and i have heard others say the stat was set to read from a wireless sensor that is not sold yet. Has it been updated recently?
Matt McQueen ......we reverted to previous version via usb to no avail. When logging into account it says inside temp is 168 degrees. Outside is correct. Control reading inside 99, outside correct. Thanks for your thoughts.
I was there and I still say this is one of my favorite shows of all time. I keep coming back to this video for the nostalgia

Nice, def more to come. Starting to get motivated again. Lol
Very nice video! Thank you!
Very good, closed out other work channel as to get more videos on this one to help out - stay tuned.
I realize this video is a couple years old. I have the latest generation of the infinity connex thermostat, and it sent me an email that says "AUXILIARY INPUT (G) ALERT" The G terminal is connected to the condensate pump. I gave it a wiggle, and it ran for a few seconds and stopped. I think it is working correctly - there is no puddle due to overflow. What's up with the alert?
Angus Podgorny The AUX G is still a safety circuit on new infinity. There is a safety (usually float, condensate pump switch) tripping the aux g notification. It is also possible a 33 limit trip occurred and not set up to send you a notification of it, as 33 limit trip also causes AUX G trip at exact same time.
Had the same problem today with the customer getting an alert and I looked at the condensate pump and ez trap and there was barely any water in it cause they’ve only run AC once this year. Couldn’t find a problem
Check to see if a 33 limit trip occurs as the exact same time as G terminal fault, if this is noticed in the last 10 system events, then its the limit tripping, dropping out 24v on the board which also causes as simultaneous G Terminal fault due to that loss of voltage. I have caught a few Ez traps lifting up due to static if evap in the positive side, or older version of them the float could pop off and not be attached to rod keeping switch closed. If you have worked on these you know what im talking about. Any chance drain is clear enough to drain but slow? And backs up when latent load in increases. Good luck, let me know. Ty
would this ever be used with an april aire fresh air unit? my april air damper is set to open 5 mins every hour, maybe when it opens it can send a signal to the g terminal and turn the fan on for 5 mins to bring in fresh air? otherwise the damper can open and if the blower is off it's useless.
more jello please , You can bring the fan on that way from control of April air unit. However, We usually use a current sensing relay on blower motor to tell fresh air unit blower is on, then it will initiate a damper open for time duration (5 min in your case).
How to rest these fucking termostate

Maybe you can help me I’ve got a Bryant Evolution Connex controller with Fault code178 System malfunction indoor unit communication. We have 24v on indoor Fan Coil Board But no lights on board. AC Not working...Think Board is NG...Have you seen this?
Norm Leon Wall controller is not communicating with furnace or air handler. Be sure there is no wet or safety switch in line with communication wires that may be tripped. Is it a constant error or one that comes and goes?
Norm Leon the 24 volts, where are you reading that? If led is not lit, and fuse is good and you have 24 v on Secondary wires from transformer at board where they connect. Then probably a board.

A side comment - If the wireless is set up and the customer info is set up, then the customer will get an email/text of the condition [Auxiliary Input (G) Shutdown]. Also, I think that if the service co is set to receive the info and the customer designates that service co, that service co will get the same email/text. Pretty slick.
