Watercolor 101 ~ My Top 10 Tips for Creating a Palette 🎨✨✨✨
Hi & Welcome to the Video! Here are my 10 Top Tips for Curating your own Watercolor Palette.. . Enjoy!
1. Do your colors have mostly warm or mainly cool undertones.. .
This is a big one for me as I have many colors on my palette. When painting, I usually narrow it down to only a handful, but i can choose these from any colors in my palette.. . the reason this works is because all the colors have the same cool undertones, so I can choose 3 or 4 of any colors on the palette to mix with neutrals, & it will create a harmonious palette.
This can be done with cool or warm undertones, and you may want a palette for each.
2. How Easily do your Paints Re-wet?
This is something I may not talk about enough but is a crucial part of deciding on your palette, & on being able to use your colors to their full potential
Some colors rewet with the slightest application of a wet brush, others need water to be placed on them & a small amount of time to activate.. . This is something I’m quite comfortable with now & it doesn’t bother me either way, but when I was first starting I did appreciate colors that rewet easily.. .
Some Brands I recommend for this are
Schmincke, they are the creamiest!
Holbein
Michael Harding
KJDesignsbyKaren {for shimmer colors that rewet with the touch of a brush}
This may also differ even between colors in some brands, because each pigment is different
3. Granulation
Do you prefer a smoother wash, or do you like the texture granulation provides.. . This may also depend on what you need to paint, for example, you may need a smoother brown for hair, or a granulating brown for a tree trunk
4. Staining or Non Staining Colors
Staining colors are very vivid & pack a wonderful punch in the vibrancy department, however, they are often harder to control {because of how saturated they are, in washes they can overtake every other color} so they may need some practice if you have them on your palette
5. Lightfastness
Some colors, often brighter, Flourescent colors will fade over time. I still like to use them because they are so beautiful & I think it’s important to have lovely things to create memories & beauty in the now as well as things that will last.. . I like to paint everything first, then glaze these colors over the top, to have the best of both worlds!
6. Opaque vs Transparent
This can also be an important part of your palette decision making.. . Some watercolor artists use only transparent colors to get very specialized effects & clean glazes
There may also be instances where one or the other is more useful, I have heard some botanical artists say that after working on a project for 40 hours if they make a tiny mistake, they will use some more opaque white to rectify this if needed
7. Tonal Range
This is a big consideration for me.. .
You can see I like to have softer versions & more saturated versions of the color, but you can also create tonal variety using water, or using white {titanium white for a more opaque look, zinc white for a more translucent one}
I’m also interested in tonal decisions because of a process called equi~luminance {I used a bit of creative license to make it equi~luminescence ☺️} This is when colors from the same tonal range are placed kind of hovering or floating next to each other, to create a shimmer or glowing effect.. . I really love the way this looks & feels to the viewer
8. Mixing Ability
How well do your colors work together, & can you get the range of colors & textures you’re looking for from your palette.. .
This is one of the most fun things to work on ~ I could fill {& I have, but I could still do more!} whole sketchbooks with color swatches & color mixes
9. Sparkle Colors
I love them! I also love to balance these out with more earthy colors, like a holographic champagne gold with a grainy violet brown earth
10. Do you love your palette?
This should be pretty intuitive, but I feel like a lot of time goes into telling us how to set up a palette based on that particular artists likes & needs.. . Your palette should reflect your work, your aspirations, & how you want to paint.. . it’s where your style even begins!
I’m sure Ive forgotten a few key things, let us know in the comments if you have any other palette necessities, considerations, or recommendations.. .
Have a wonderful week! Happy Painting! 🥳🎨💗✨🪷🦋🐾

    Your name (eau poetique) means "poetic water"? Poetry of color would be "la poésie de la couleur"...if that's what you meant to say. If you were just making up a cute French sounding name then my mistake. I apologize.

    Gorgeous items and now I have things to give my husband for my Christmas list . Love the blue by A gallo . The pinks too and I’m not a pink girl. I thought etchr notebooks were expensive . I love all your palette colors . Most of my wc are Daniel Smith since in USA they are so easy and cheap to access. I have some beautiful etsy from Masha watercolor and 31purplefish which are big in the states but they are cheap compared to your haul. Unfortunately the paper your share the shop is closed and has nothing in stock .

    • @eaupoetique
      @eaupoetique 16 днів тому

      Oh just what I was hoping for! A kind of unofficial Gift guide! Certainly the sketchbook & walnut palette & pastels will be in my Christmas gift guide.. . They are quite expensive {I like to use my UA-cam earnings for higher ticket items to showcase beautiful things out there on the market} but they are definitely worth every penny! The sketchbook does come in smaller sizes to try {when we got two at a museum gift shop, I’d checked on Mums that it was blank & just assumed mine was too, if it didn’t have lines I wouldn’t have even looked on their website trying to find a blank one, but I was so pleasantly surprised when I saw the Amalfi cotton paper ones!} The thing with the sketchbook is I mean it’s nothing like any other art sketchbook type book, it’s heavy & really exquisite Italian craftsmanship, you can definitely feel that it’s worth the money! Even my little blue one I love so much! {if anyone gets one or has experience with these books please let us know your thoughts!} As far as compared to Etchr, I haven’t tried the perfect sketchbook, but I got a small white one & the smell about knocked me out, I couldn’t air it out & that chemical smell was there for months, I feel like if I’d gotten the larger one I probably would have passed out at my desk it was that severe, I’m not sure if they still have that strong smell or maybe I just got a bad one, but these Italian books have no smell except the leather & paper.. . the only thing is that the paper is thinner.. . I like that because more pages to me means I’ll use the book more & not be precious with it, & with the amount of pagesin it, this could take 3-5 years for me to even fill! It’s really like investing in a large heirloom art piece that you can contribute to! Ooh Masha Watercolors! I hadn’t heard of them until I was recently lookin up ceramic palettes, & I did purchase one of the palettes I’d like to add my watercolors & pearls to.. . That might be ready to show for my Christmas Gift Guide! Have you tried her palettes? I think the Greenleaf & Blueberry blues are definitely very expensive, but I’ve found them to last a long time & be again, a very luxurious product.. . I think the hard thing with doing a video like this is that I’ve been saving up & buying these over a long period of time, but when you see it & want it all at once it’s quite overwhelming.. . Sorry about that! 😬 please definitely pace yourselves! There’s often been things on my wishlists for years *until I could organize them! Thanks for your thoughts! Have a lovely week! 🤗✨🌸🪷💝🎨 *edit P.S Also, I always recommend looking for local alternatives that might be similar but more affordable because they’re local to you, so absolutely feel free to use this as more like Inspiration than an actual list as well! 🌬️✨✨✨

      Love your supply demo; such a lovely set of colors you've created! I definitely don't use the watercolor sticks the same way. :). I touch the watercolor stick with a wet brush and then paint directly on the paper, like Daniel Smith calls them, "a pan in the hand". I haven't broken them up but they live in their own slot in a DS watercolor stick case. The St Louis Art Supply video has everyone dipping them in water, melting them and drawing. (I guess thats one way to get people to buy more ha) i definitely don't like the lines left behind when i tried to draw with them. I use American Journey watercolor sticks or Neocolor 2's in that way to draw and re-wet instead :) Daniel Smith has quite a few livestreams on YT where they use them so i learned more about them that way.

    love your couch Thea...but sadly the repetitiveness of the "jingle"...which the beautiful piece of music has now become for me, makes it hard to sit through your whole video...which is a shame...as I LOVE your content...and I wish for a different sound landscape on your channel after years of this same...what has turned into a "jingle" to me....but I know you must love it...and this is your channel...just thought you may like to know, that, there may be others, like me, who ears are hurting at just 40 minutes, and like me, need to take a break from the "now noise"...though a lovely piece of music...I hope to come back after my my break...but...probably will get lost somewhere else. Anyways...lovely pastels and love your couch drawing with your new pastels...Henri Roche...yes...very pigmented and rich...What do you use for protection from the pigment particles Thea? Without knowing the pigment content...they make these little finger socket thingies...you can put on your index finger, to protect the skin from potentially dangerous pigments...Maybe you are aware...but don't like them. enjoy your beautiful new supplies...Janis in The Yukon Canada

    • @eaupoetique
      @eaupoetique 15 днів тому

      Look, in reality you listen to the music on my channel for 10- 15 minutes every two weeks. It’s very hard to find music that suits. We don’t have volumes of music available to us. Most channels do have a theme song or reuse music and I like that, it tells me whose channel I’m watching. There were 3 songs in this video. I rotate about 10 but they do all sound similar. A lot of people find the music relaxing and a good compliment to the visuals. No one helps me with the videos, not a husband, not a friend or an assistant, I have to figure everything out, often when I’m exhausted & like last video I’d been sick all week but tried really hard to get a beautiful video to you without complaining of how much work it had been. There are plenty of other art channels you can watch, or I can cut out half the content and speed up the rest. The intro and outro often takes me an extra two hours to organize those little bits of footage which a lot of people appreciate that help add to the relaxing atmosphere and help them get excited about the upcoming video. I try to take on feedback, “don’t say um as much, do more of this, don’t do that” etc, but Please if you want to add criticism, add a solution as well, otherwise it just becomes very distressing & honestly {when I say honestly I mean you can’t even know how much} I don’t feel like doing videos anymore, because no one sees how hard they are for me to actually make and I don’t know how to fix the problem or if I can. I hope this helps you to understand where I’m coming from, I am willing to take music suggestions, but please, let’s just not have any more drama about the music, I really doubt I’ve ruined the music, it was made to be added to these videos and I’ve barely ever heard it on any other channels.

    Enjoy your videos so much. Very warm and calming. Your mountains look a lot like our Blue Ridge mountains here just outside Washington, DC (Northern Virginia) in the US. I enjoy seeing them in the distance from the wineries we go to. Beautiful views!

      Thankyou! It’s nothing too special, it’s Schmincke Perylene green, sometimes mixed with a deep brown or violet earth, sometimes mixed with a lighter green like Viridian for a bit of brightness, or even with a bit of potters pink to neutralize it 🤗🌬️✨🌸🌷🎪🎨

      I think you just influenced me 😅 ~ I bought a couple years & years ago before I was painting watercolor, I just liked the colors I never actually used them.. . I think this is definitely worth investigating! {.. . 10 hours of intense google research later lol} you may be seeing some in future videos! 🤗🌸💗🎪🫧🪷🎨🌷

    Well, landsakes! Millie’s little paws coming out of the bush was just the cutest! This was such a relaxing video, with all things beautiful, a feast for the eyes. I truly admire people who work with pastels, because I find them very challenging. I think the dustiness bothers me, and that I can’t be precise with them. I just make a big mess😄 However, I think they are so pretty, too. Thank you for the long video. I know some people like shorter videos, but I am not some people.🙂

      hehe I should have said to comment “puppy paws” if you made it to the end! She definitely is always wondering why I’m pointing my phone at her, like I’m just playing adorably, nothing to see here.. . Millie, the people want to see you lol I agree the pastel dust definitely bothers me as well, it stops me from using them as much as I’d like! 🌬️🫧🌸💗🤗🪷✨

      Thankyou So! It’s called Incredible White Mask, Liquid Frisket ~ I got it off Amazon It has been a nice one to use, the only thing is because it’s white it’s harder to see than some of the others, but I prefer that so I know it won’t stain the paper, I will tilt it to the light 🤗✨🫧🌸🪷
