Curious to how you long was the consideration in-between turns with this basic house versus one of the more complex ones? I found that extra bit of working towards the house ability helps structure my planning & therefore cuts my decision time down & wondered if that was the case for you. Good stuff as always!

@stevenokeefe2681 I only had 2 active Fleet Power, so even though I had 3 carriers I did not have enough active fleet power for that many deployments.

@corey3145 Thanks! I had a brief discussion in the comments of a previous video (comparing original SI to Horizons) with @martinvoetman8717 that got me thinking about adding expansions to Horizons, so I figured it was as good an excuse as any to play a game of Spirit Island!

@markdandridge4433 Oh wow, you’re new to TM?! You’re in for a treat! The original solo mode (something of a beat-your-own-score game) is also a valid and fun way to play without the complexity of running the Automa, but of course Automa is good too. I intend to do another Automa playthrough in the next couple weeks to demo using an Automa Corporation, too. Have fun, and let me know what you think after playing!

@table_for_one When I Discovered Solo gaming, TM was one of the first to catch my eye. I think it's right in my wheel house. I got it all sleeved up. I have been watching videos but haven't gotten it to the table just yet. After seeing the Automa I knew I had to have that as well.

@corey3145 Ha! I don’t think this is even the first Spirit Island intervention you and I have had 🤣 I would say I only have 3 giant boxes at the moment: Voidfall, Anachrony, and Scythe. Some games are in multiple “regular-ish” sized boxes: Terraforming Mars, Nemesis (and Lockdown), and of course Spirit Island. I have all SI components in 3 boxes: the base game box, the JE box, and the NI box. If I had foil spirit panels instead of the thicker cardboard I think I could do away with the NI box as well. I’ve played most of the NI Spirits now. My overall opinion is that some are neat, but I didn’t NEED them. Fine to have them, but wouldn’t go out of my way. As for Incarna, it does in fact add another layer of complexity that I wouldn’t want all the time. I saw NI selling for $60 this week at PAX Unplugged. I would not pay that much for it. But I got it for $19 during a big sale, and for that price I feel good about it. NI is the last SI expansion I would recommend buying; get through JE, B&C, and F&F first, and if you’re still loving everything then go ahead and pile NI on top.

@table_for_one yeah, hard to walk away from $19. SI is definitely my big game to cleanse the palate after a binge sesh like I'm currently on. I forgot you had Scythe as the other giant box game.

@corey3145 I saw Andromeda’s Edge (deluxe) this weekend and thought about picking it up but wasn’t ready to pull the trigger. I remembered your recommendation though! I haven’t put Scythe on the channel yet (except to unbox) but I do enjoy it. I’ve considered recording the Rise of Fenris campaign as a playthrough series at some point in the future, but haven’t decided for now.

@melibabe During previous missions you must use the Sea Star as your launch zone where you place your initial vessel, gaining the arrival bonus of 1 disc. But in this mission you can choose any depth-1 zone as your launch zone, and I chose the Volcanic Island, which instead has an arrival bonus of advancing your Ingenuity track. Then at the start of the first round, you also gain discs based on you Inspiration track (generally 1), and then recover 1 disc from your Team Leader based on your Coordination track (also usually 1). So yeah, typically you have 3 discs to take your first turn, but because I chose a different launch zone I only had 2. Did that all make sense?

@danedwards1872 Oh, that’s a good call! My experience with roll and writes is pretty limited. Of the ones you mentioned, do you have a recommended one? I recognize the name Three Sisters but don’t know anything about it.

@@table_for_one For solo play I would say 3 Sisters is the best, then DDD, then Welcome To. Welcome To is better multiplayer imo. 3 sisters is farming themed and with solo play there is bot/ai that blocks spaces and eliminates sections of your farm.

Thank you! I will keep this in mind. With holidays coming up it’s not a good time for me to buy new games, but there is still a lot of wintertime left and some roll and writes might be just the thing to play by a fireplace!

@realdealastrology9 You’re welcome; I’ll try to use another one of the new boards on my next playthrough. Yes, Amazonis (the larger map with additional hexes and terraforming steps) is the only map not supported by the Automa.

@realdealastrology9 I definitely love TM overall! The Automa is very well made and definitely a much different experience from the original solo mode, but it also takes more effort to table and to manage. Which solo mode I choose to play at any given time (original or Automa) just depends on my mood. I think they each have their place, and some players will definitely have a strong preference for one or the other.

@lclaypool20 Good catch! It was really just a mistake on my part. The predator (in this case the gator) should have moved 2 spaces to eat the prey (tiger) but I got excited for the end game and moved the wrong card, haha. Same result though, one stack remaining at the end of the game. Also, I'm guessing you're the same lclaypool whose Sky Team upgrade kit I put in the mail today--just wanted to say thanks again, I hope you love it! It's not going very far, you should have it soon!

@randito2387 Haha you’re probably right, but I also suspect a better pilot would, y’know, talk to their co-pilot 🤣 There is a little bit of a sort of push you luck element at play, but it’s not much different than the 2-player game in my opinion.

@DonnyRam1961 Oh, I don’t know about the short staff variant-where did you find it? I like this solo mode that I demoed, but I’d certainly like to give it a try! Have you done any of the airports with the 60-second module? (Can’t remember which airports that included). That is TENSE haha! Reminds me of playing Lux Aeterna (check out my Lux Aeterna Shepard Tone playthrough if you’re not familiar with that game, it’s solo only and very tense and fun, like Sky Team with a shot of adrenaline)

@leopr0707 Thanks, we certainly like them! We decided that we only want to sell completed components and not the files. My partners do the modeling/designing and the actual printing (I am not familiar with the technical details of 3D printing myself, I just play the games!), but as I understand it we have to use some pretty specific and unusual slicer settings and also edit the code on the printer itself, so even if we sold the files I’m not sure they’d actually print correctly. @aarondovauo1471 I just released a playthorugh with Nervo on hard mode, you should check the score on that one 😉 Going from Easy to Normal/Medium is a serious jump. Don’t get discouraged; I went from consistently winning on Easy to getting stomped on Medium when I made that switch too. Stick with it, you’ll get the hang of it! Seems like you’re already having some ah-ha moments, so hopefully that helps 😄

Well, after watching your video on the Crisis Board, I realized that I was somehow mistakenly adding a phantom +1 strength to the Voidborn for each skirmish. Not sure where I thought it came from, as I was adding 1+ any player board corruption to each skirmish, then another +1 in Cycle 2 & 3. 🤨 That extra strength soaked up a lot of my resources and actions to deal with, so I’m looking forward to trying Ancient Secrets at its intended difficulty lol. 🙄

@aarondovauo1471 Oh no, you were playing on beast mode! 🤣 Glad you caught it at least. Did you perhaps play with House Shiveus? Their House ability adds +1 to Skirmishes but also grants Influence for successfully defending. Perhaps you carried that rule to other Houses? You can see my Devil’s Triangle playthorugh to watch Shiveus in action if that jogs your memory at all.

Oh ffs, that’s exactly what happened lol. 🤦‍♂️ I ported over all the drawbacks and none of the benefits. 😆

@corey3145 Sky Team is excellent as-sold: a 2-player co-op game that has fun tension and plays quickly. The 2 players are working together but there is hidden information that they cannot share. The fan-made solo variant found an extremely simple and elegant solution to allow for solo play that captures these crucial elements. My solo playthrough video is already filmed and I intend to publish it next week (Nov 29, 2024).

@m34nb34n I have seen that in some homes and I’m for it haha! But I don’t think I have enough walls-I’d need a full art gallery for all my empty expansion boxes 🤣

@corey3145 Ooh, good question! In my personal playthroughs, I prefer stronger economic houses over military houses (of course any house can be played either way). Yarvek w/ Tactical Transports gets very little play. Astoran is one that I use less often. And Kradmor is always hit-or-miss for me for some reason. Any of those strike your fancy?

@rafiweiss3915 That’s kind of funny, I always do much better with economic strategies. I find military strategies more difficult (just for me personally, I’m quite certain they’re both equally valid and balanced strategies in VF). I hope this helps!

@aarondovauo1471 Sometimes my solo playthroughs are as valuable for what NOT to do as what to do--I mostly play for fun, and that means sometimes I biff it on the strategy haha. Have a safe trip, and try not to let the whole ferry get Corrupted!

@didierrenard3875 Hey thanks! I've got a new Voidfall solo playthrough coming out this Friday, stay tuned =) "The Voidborn Strikes Back" is just the first step of the Evaluation phase. In solo/co-op you would resolve the Crisis board, but in competitive (the tutorial is always competitive rules) you would still resolve a Skirmish, which is what is demonstrated here. I hope the makes sense! (Rulebook page 15 for more details)

@martinvoetman8717 Looks like you figured it out! Stone has additional card plays on the top track (which is very unusual). The expansion Spirits without fail have really unique personalities, whether from their growth options, track layouts, special rules, or innate powers (or often all of these in combination). It's one of the things that gives Spirit Island such durability, there is just so much to discover!

@martinvoetman8717 Well hey, welcome to the channel then! That's a great idea! I could do a playthrough using Horizons combined with the three expansions I have (Jagged Earth, Branch & Claw, and Feather & Flame). For reference, Jagged Earth is the best expansion in my opinion for anyone who already has SI/Horizons and wants more. It adds 10 Spirits and 2 island boards along with more of the same (more major/minor powers, fear cards, blight cards, etc) and more new mechanics (events, beasts, wilds, disease, strife, and badlands). After you have JE, you can then add on any other expansions in any order (Branch & Claw, Feather & Flame, and/or Nature Incarnate).

@martinvoetman8717 Yeah, that should definitely work! Someone on BGG made a good point that I hadn't considered: if combining Horizons with the Jagged Earth expansion, you COULD accommodate up to 5 players if you use "Archipelago mode," which is a variant in the JE rule book that lets you have multiple island boards that are not connected. You'd have lands F, G, & H on the Horizons board, and the lands E & F from JE either separately or forming a 2-board second island. There would be 2 land F's, but that wouldn't be the end of the world. And if you played with 4 people, you could block off the "F" on the Horizons board and have 2 2-board islands (G&H, and E&F) so no one is totally isolated. Sort of a long aside, but the headline is that the expansions are slightly more playable with Horizons than I mentioned in this video.

@wiblick Thanks! I've had SI (and most expansions) for a while, and only recently acquired Horizons as part of a trade. The new Spirits are excellent! Use one your self when you play with your niece, you'll enjoy it! I'm folding the new Spirits into the rest of my SI boxes, and I think I'll print out some fan-made spirits to put back in the Horizons box and I'll give it away to a friend (who knows what I've done, haha)--I don't want to waste all that material, but it's really all duplicate components for me for the most part. I haven't decided yet if I should find some good fan-made Spirits to print, or if I should make my own set of low complexity Spirits. If I do make some, I'll make them available on my website and feature them in a video, but that sounds like some work haha

@silo_fx3182 Womp womp! Yeah, I thought it would be disingenuous to refilm a win (if you haven't noticed, I lose on the reg on this channel haha). In this campaign in particular I'm trying to give a real feel for what it's like to play. I try my best in general to represent games as they actually are, and sometimes I guess that means a round 1 loss!

I used your video tutorial on the Crisis Board as my guide to implementing the Crisis Board in my first solo scenario. So again, I truly appreciate what you've done to help me learn what is now unquestionably my favorite solo board game of all time. Coincidentally, I went on Etsy looking for upgrades for my retail copy of Voidfall. I stumbled upon some fantastic upgraded Guild Tokens, and also some really nice Agenda and Tech Card Boards. @corey3145 I had quite a few SI videos last year, but almost none this year. I'd like to get some new ones up on the channel as well, I think you're right. Goal right now is to finish solo playthrough videos of all 8 of the Voidfall maps by the end of 2024 (3 to go!), plus another Terraforming Mars video with the MarsBot and one more Endeavor: Deep Sea video. Starting in January I'm going to hit Anachrony pretty hard (aiming for every other week for a while), but I think I could definitely get some SI videos going again too. Plus I'm sure a handful of new games as well. I'm often releasing 3 videos per week and I still can't keep up! haha Lot's a good stuff to play =)

@corey3145 Ha! I think I mentioned it previously, but 2024 was a year of new stuff. I'll still get some new games in 2025, but I definitely want to dig deeper into what I already have, both newer and older. And SI in particular is a whole new adventure every time I play! Always feels unique.

@corey3145 I wish I had learned on Horizons, but it wasn't out yet when I got SI. SI was tough at first and I nearly gave up, but I'm glad I stuck it out. From Horizons, I think my favorites are Mud and Rising Heat, but really they're all pretty good. From the SI base game, I honestly like all the Medium/High complexity Spirits (Thunderspeaker, Rampant Green, Bringer, and Ocean's), just depending on my mood. I had a pretty good game with Bringer earlier this week, so that sticks out in my mind. Overall though, my favorite Spirits are in JE--Fractured Days and Lure are always a pretty good time for me. I'll have to give Heart of the Island another go, it's been a long time. I frequently don't use Scenarios or Adversaries (which I know is a little unusual haha) but for whatever reason I prefer to scale up by adding an extra board. Have a favorite Spirit or two? How about a Spirit that just doesn't gel with you?

@johnathankokoski Thank you! Do you have a favorite Spirit (or a few)? Fractured Days Split the Sky and Lure of the Deep Wilderness--both from JE--are some of my personal go-to Spirits. And then Finder of Paths Unseen is my nemesis, I'm terrible with that one haha

@@table_for_one ooohh Finder always breaks my brain I just don’t think my spatial reasoning is strong enough 🤣. My favorite is Starlight (for a long time though, it was Fangs); I really enjoy the flexibility of this spirit. But I have recently been enjoying Wounded Waters Bleeding quite a bit.

@johnathankokoski Starlight is neat but I haven't played it enough to really appreciate it. Have you ever heard of the "Casino Starlight" play style? You play such that you never Reclaim your cards, always gaining new cards every round and making the best of them. Fun to try, anyway! And Fangs is great, no argument there, but I do feel like I'm stuck using the same opening every time. More a lack of imagination on my part than an issue with the Spirit, I suspect. And Wounded Waters looks really really cool! Probably the one from NI I'd be most interested in trying, but I haven't picked up that expansion yet. Gaze intrigues me too.

@ronyschell858 Good catch, you are absolutely correct! At 7:05 items 1 and 2 on the priority list are equivalent. If there are multiple sectors where the Voidborn would win AND/OR tie, then move to the next item on the priority list (Most Recall). Thank you for catching this!

@silo_fx3182 Anachrony and Voidfall are among my favorite games (if that wasn’t clear already!). Both are highly recommended. I’ve still got some Voidfall solo playthroughs I need to release (would like to release a game with each solo map by year end, so 3 more as of today), and Q1 2025 will heavily feature Anachrony and all of its many modules/expansions.
