Tutorial: How to Seal an Envelope with Thread and a Wax Seal
In the age of emails and instant messages, there’s something truly magical about sending or receiving a beautifully sealed letter. Sealing an envelope with thread and a wax seal combines elegance with historical charm, creating a piece of art that’s as delightful to behold as it is to open. This technique dates back centuries, often used to secure important correspondence or simply to add a touch of romance. Here’s how you can do it yourself.
What You’ll Need
1. A Letter and Envelope: Choose a high-quality envelope made of thick paper to withstand the sealing process.
2. Thread and needle: A thin cotton thread, silk ribbon, or fine twine works well. Opt for a color that complements your envelope or wax.
3. Wax Seal Stamp: You can use an antique design, a personalized monogram, or any decorative seal you love.
4. Sealing Wax: Choose traditional wax sticks or modern glue-gun wax. Of course, Kathryn Hastings waxes are my favorite
5. A Heat Source: A candle, lighter, or wax melting spoon will be needed to melt the wax.
6. Scissors: To cut your thread to the desired length.

No scent is best!! It's healthier and safer!! I don't need a smell to help me remember you or be happy with nor interfere with scents in my home. Out goes your scented letter, not read. Reasons to not scent mail, it gets on ther people's mail while in travel. Allergies, asthma, dermatitis, hives, mixes with and alters other mail in transit and in my home. No fragrance please!!! Everyone should stop. You are not aware of all the people you are hurting. 😢 If hand delivered, it might be a different thought or more. I recieved a scented letter and 1 person told me not to open the letter because the scent does go through the envelope. To trash it went without reading it.

I think they would probably arrive but I wouldn’t recommend it since it could easy snag other envelopes. With this technique, I’d definitely recommend an outer envelope.

Thank you for sharing. Can wrapped envelopes go through the post? I’ve had no issues with sealing wax, but I’ve never tried posting with this technique.

This was a very interesting video! One little correction...awl is pronounced more like "all" than "owl".

Thanks for these easy instructions. Bookbinders use an "awl." Love this old tradition.

So fun! I imagine you need specialty paper for this? I’m assuming regular paper would be way too thin and the string would break

Actually any weight will do. I just wouldn’t do tissue paper. This is Amatruda’s fully cotton paper. ❤

I love all these options…what tissue paper are you using for the tissue paper method, Kay? Is it just regular wrapping paper or would you use more like a tracing paper? Thanks!!!💜

Thank you for this video it is very well done. I am not clear on the remelting of the stored chocolate. If it is in the same bag that you cut the tip off, seems like remelting would cause a mess. Would you clear this up for me? Thanks

    • @KathrynHastingsCo
      @KathrynHastingsCo Рік тому

Yes! I twist the end when remelting and the. Untwist when ready to use. Does that make sense? ❤
