Unboxing a kilo of water opal from Ethiopia
Переглядів 1,4 тис.14 днів тому
This week I imported a Kilo (2.2 pounds) of non hydrophane opal directly from my supplier in Welo, Ethiopia. I thought it would be fun to open it together so you can see what you get in an average box. Some interesting pieces and some really large chunks. I call this type 'water opal' as it's mined wet and must remain wet or it will crack and craze. The locals call it 'young opal'. #weloopal #w...

This is a 15.3 gram beauty from the Nesmen Forest. It was found in two pieces with a natural break (10.73 4.6g). I've carved a beautiful opal with lots of greens and reds to fit snugly between the two broken halves like puzzle pieces. Both are attached with UV reactive acrylic resin so that the stones aren't damaged in any way. The final piece is awesome and the green flashes from the opal perf...

      Yes, some of them are perfectly clear crystal. Like a window! Sometimes it pays to leave a little clay on the edges or the back when cutting them so that you can look into it and have that three dimensionality.

    Welo opal 5k. Noooo you got ripped off hard. Australian opal or brazilian opal for that price yes but im sorry not welo. Does not matter how big welo opal is that piece is a MAX $30 $50 on its absolute best day. Also be carefull buying welo as most is treated. 99.9% of black welo is smoke treated to make it turn black. If you plan on keeping this opal dont let it "dry out" or have in exposed heat it will crack and even shatter. Every few months place it in water for a day to keep it stable. You will also notice when you soak it in water the colours will disapear. The colours will come back when it has been out of the water for atleast 30min . Just a heads up from one opal fanatic to another.

  • @Marcelo-yj2yq

    • @camansega
      @camansega 29 днів тому

      It depends what you mean by fair price. Cut and ready to be mounted, 20-50 USD per ct. In the rough, much less. It depends on how lucky you get. 1 to 5 USD per ct. If bought in very large quantities, much less.

    It might be time to invest in a dedicated polishing wheel, bc that flat spot that developed (prior to nuking the opal) seemed like it was caused by the cerium oxide disk. All-in-one cabbing machines are awesome, but there’s a much higher risk of the c.o. disk getting contaminated with grit or silica bits when it’s in such close proximity to the rest of your workflow.

  • @ThatOpalGuy
    @ThatOpalGuy Місяць тому

    Well now you have, more, smaller stones. I hate handling stones that are polished on all sides, after the fact. But I also hate dopping ethiopian because I usually get chips when removing them. That was a beautiful stone. I really love watching Welo absorb water. It completely changes the look of the stone. In many ways, I like it more when it is full of water.

    • @LuxuryOpalsEurope
      @LuxuryOpalsEurope Місяць тому

      I totally agree! if you look at the stone when it was wet it was so yellow and had tons of sparkle throughout. Once it dried for 24 hours it wasn't nearly as special. I chip them often, either removing from the dop stick or just straight up dropping them on the ground. It really pays dividends to have a rug under your work bench.... I'm going to have to get a piece of scrap rug and through it under.

    • @paigey1995-
      @paigey1995- Місяць тому

      When it absorbs water does it do this weird clear like border? (I'm really really new to opal) And I always see it when water touches the opal but I've been told I'm not right also I've got some Australian and Ethiopian and I can pull them out my jewellery box and they're clear! Then after an hour or so of wearing them they go back to their milky colour they were originally!!

    Gratulation to the wonderful gem 🌈💎🌈. I also have been cutting dark based welo opal recently. To me it seams that the dark based welo opal is even more heat sensitive than normal welo opal. What are your experiences?

    • @LuxuryOpalsEurope
      @LuxuryOpalsEurope Місяць тому

      Thank you! I didn't notice the heat but this wasn't such a large piece and I was using cold water. I have some much larger 'black' opals from the Stayish mine I'm going to cut next so let's see if they heat up.

    • @mirjamwi356
      @mirjamwi356 Місяць тому

      @@LuxuryOpalsEuropeI was referring to the heat up during polishing with cerium oxide. Sometimes the mixture of water and cerium oxide gets a little dense and therefore the transfer of heat which builds up during polishing is not fast enough transfered from the opal. I really had an eye on it to keep the mixture thin and watery, but after rubbing by hand with a leather cloth some lines are showing up. These lines do remind me of how welo opal looks like when it has gotten too hot during polishing. I will also try with another perhaps the lines where a part of this opal and I just overlooked them before cutting.

    Been keeping an eye on Ethiopian opal for years, but I don’t think I’ve seen a legit Stayish opal for sale/auction. They’re always what looks identical to smoke treated Welo opal being erroneously passed off as Stayish. Also, do you cut your Welo/Wallo opal wet? If so, what percentage would you say permanently changes to opaque white body tone?

    Opal is a gamble every step of the way. Choosing a mining site, how much equipment to buy, choosing on whether to sell the rough now bc eating food and having a place to live is fun or whether you keep the rough for a rainy day to try and get a better price. Then there’s the gamble of buying rough, cutting it, and fingers crossed cracks/crazing don’t develop after it’s been sitting in your drawer for 6 months. Finally selling the finished pieces. A person would have to be nuts to deal with opal, but it’s absolutely worth it bc there’s just nothing else like opal.

      Hi, I love all opals. Most opals are from 5 - 6.5 on Moh's Hardness Scale. The hardest are from Brazil, followed by Mintabie in Australia. However, in my experience Ethiopian opals have the same stability as Australian opals. They both chip and fracture quite often which is why perfect opals are so valuable.
