A New Way To Practice Drums
Переглядів 72Місяць тому
In this video, we will be talking about (and demonstrating) a cool way to practice drums that doesn't require a new book, course, or popular drum guru. This method involves listening to YOURSELF and using your own weaknesses to create the material that you will practice drums with. I got the idea from Matt Gartska from Animals as Leaders and I think it's a really cool concept. P.S. - This might...

Cool man
Meinl is not a Turkish cymbal brand 😂 great sounding cymbals none the less
You’re totally right, oops 😂 I heard that the Meinl Bianca cymbals used to be made by the Diril company which is Turkish so that must be where I got that from
How do u get those little rags on the toms to stay
I clipped them with the mic clips. Almost like if you used a clothes pin
I think your overheads did do them justice. Good job
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Man, keep the old ones and cut around the cracks to save them a little longer, they still sound killer! And the new ones all sound about a half tone deeper in pitch, they complement each other very well.
Once I learn how to repair cymbals, my life is gonna change! Thanks for watching!
Take care of your cymbal technique and that awesome crash is gonna last a lifetime :)
I have learned my lesson, no more bashing for me! Haha
@@DruMarshallDrums Honestly, if you wanted to play harder you could roll with a slightly thicker crash with more body to it for heavy chorus playing, that way you wont overplay super thin cymbals like that sweet crash. Just a tip that some cymbalmakers share, but if you love the sound of what you've got I wont blame you (they sound fantastic either way).
@@falconshock3677 What cymbals do you like to use?
You should have purchased Paiste cymbals. Way better than Zildjian ever dreamed of sounding.
I’ve heard very good things about Paiste! In the full video, I also review and play 2 Meinl cymbals which I think sound great. Curious on your thoughts!
@ thx for the reply. I went and watched your full video and wow your band sounds great and I loved the review you did. You turned me into a subscriber! The Meinl’s sound really good and sound like they will blend well with your Zildjian’s. I admit Paiste’s are not cheap, but they last forever and in my opinion the best tone no matter which series you pick (by that I mean their professional lines).
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words about my band! I will definitely keep Paiste in mind for next time, another friend of mine also has been telling me to look more into Paiste. Cheers!
Dru it’s time to go Paiste! Nice cymbals! 👍🏻😎
Thanks for watching, Earl! I remember one of my first crash cymbals being a Paiste and I loved it back then. I gotta give them a shot!
Actually...meinl cymbals are made in Germany. #factcheck
The more you know! 🤯
Hot cymbals!!!
On fire! 🔥
heehehe so cool
Thanks for watching!
That’s Jerry for ya!
The best! 😄 🥁
Travis style is so varied and different nowadays, especially since neighborhoods. It would be difficult to guess his new grooves. Just watching after midnight you wouldnt guess what hed do. Id like your take on the newer blink songs in one more time. He goes pretty nuts on em.
Thanks for watching! Some of the drumming on One More Time is insane. Once they release a new song I haven’t heard yet, I’ll work on a vid!
Subscribed just for the Great Tshirt your wearing. Mike is Dream Theatre this song KILLS! lol
King's X rules!! thanks for watching :D
A bit sloppy and definitely not post worthy.
Too many causes too early. I’m done with you.
lmao......really?
This is garbage. DT sacrificed artistry for their buddy. The same old RLRLKK fills are so boring. He couldn't hold a candle to the parts Mangini created.
True Mp techniques are boring compared to mm
We need a drum off between them to really settle this debate!
@@DruMarshallDrums Mangini is technically better. Much as Rudess is to Derek Or Kevin. But......
The only thing that can be said is that the legendary sound of DT's drums is back. Welcome back Mike P. The song is simply brutal!
Hell yes!
I think you just took the world record for shortest time to pause in a reaction vid. :p On a serious note.. So glad to hear the return of the "organic groove" feel Mike Portnoy always brings to DT's sound. It just feels right again. Regarding Portnoy not playing the same as the music.. I don't think that's a direction error. I'm early in the vid yet, but you'll probably notice he's clearly playing that part of the song in the vid, but not the same as the recording. I don't think he'd memorized the part all the way through yet when they recorded this video. I'm sure you know that his parts are a mix of numerous takes, and he plays each one differently. So he has to memorize the final combination of all those takes.
Haha yes! Ill take that world record 😆 and you might be right! Just my perfectionist brain wanting to see all the parts line up with the vid. I’m glad MP is back too. Thanks for watching!
@@DruMarshallDrums I'm a fellow drummer, and right there with you lol. I always catch those mis-matched parts. It's like the uncanny valley for drummers.
Boring boring MP.Miss you already MM.
Yes missing MM, he brought changes to dt style and technique
I bet Petrucci misses this feeling when playing instrumentals for 14 years in DT, something that was not achieved this way with Mangini.
Mike brought an energy that no one can replace!
How dare you shun the wizard!!!
Please forgive me 🙏🤣
Just found this. Great video! But, I'd have to say that the difference between the two Mikes is that Portnoy is the more artistic and groove-driven player, whereas Mangini was the more sterile, technical player. Mangini's nickname is Machine, afterall.
Mike Portnoy is the founder of Dream Theater he started the band
You aint wrong!
A lot of people would like to think that bs. But JP and JM are the real founders. Always have been and always will be. MP was the original drummer they found when they were looking. Don't make him out to be more than he is. He's already narcissistic enough.
If you don’t believe me, look at the 20th anniversary score documentary
I’ve been listening to them since a junior in high school since images and words came out so I know what I’m talking about. See this is why I never comment.
He maybe the founder but MM brought changes to dt
I got a call at 3 in the morning not long ago, and all the caller said was "we're putting the band back together"...and hung up!....i think it was Mike P!
It was definitely Mike P!
Respectfully, I don't agree with you at all. Great song!!! Super cool feel and great melody.
Thats fair, thanks for watching!
It's cool broo, i like it 🤘
Thank you much! 🥁
OMG they have done it again ..Fantastic !! if this not the new Bond movie theme then this should be, even the title for a Bond movie fits , James Bond in 'When the time is right'...they need to be commissioned to write a Bond Theme or some other Epic movie score...best band on the planet at present.
That would be epic! It is truly a spooky piece of music!
6:31 - good catch there, haha. No other reaction vid mentioned that. You were thinking of Derek Sherinian, the guy before Rudess. Jordan's use of music is sort of "a thing" showing off how killer he is at site reading, but I suspect he doesn't actually need it any more than anyone else. My initial reaction was similar to many: it's almost too cliché, hitting every little DT hook you can think of... but after a few listens, that's not exactly a bad thing. Other than the silly lyrics, it slays. Not a song I'll seek out in a few years, but not one I'll ever skip over either.
Haha my drummer brain is always watching for that! Ah that makes sense. Maybe it is a bit of a “flex” on us normies who couldn’t handle that level of note reading. I suppose in some way, it’s almost more impressive if he was reading it because the music is so busy and dense. And I can see why other people aren’t into this song for those reasons. But I wonder what people want to hear instead… do they want DT to start being like the younger proggy bands like Animals as Leaders or Polyphia? Or would they hate on that too for the band “selling out?” I think people would hate on DT for staying the same and if they branched out and tried to be different. Can’t please everybody haha
Invest in some good headphones if you're gonna do a music review 😂 laptops have the worst speakers btw...
I 1,000% agree, I need those 🤣
Too many pauses kills reaction videos👎
Nope, I like reactions like this that highlight things that maybe you did not catch because you want to understand the song, the type of reactions you like is not from musicians, is from random people who listens to Ariana grande or one direction and then react to music like this and just bob their heads and make us believe they like it.
Don't get me wrong. Portnoy uses the same fills and grooves ever. This song is so similar to A nightmare to Remember. That said, it's good to have Portnoy back to DT.
Yeah, I think the fills can be a bit samey at times but it’s so “Portnoy” that I like it haha
@@DruMarshallDrums I understand.
He definitely has his toolbox. I think every Portnoy-ism is present in this song lol. But it's good. It feels right.
Excellent idea! These kind of errors and weaknesses come up in recordings.
Thanks for watching! Always better to make the errors when practicing than when it really matters in the studio!
First!
Uno!!
This is not my fave DL track....yet. This is a salad that has too many ingredients that it almost cancels itself out. Digging the reacts!
Thanks for the kind words E Dogg! Fully agree with your salad analogy. But a lot of people have said it grows on them so maybe that’ll be the case!
@@DruMarshallDrums every time I think I don't like something of theirs I find myself infected by the earworm fully by day 4
Why practice, when you can just be perfect from the get-go?
Only you know what that feels like
Great video, really good ideas, il give them a try, if i ever finish building my studio 😪🤣
Thanks for watching! I feel your pain on the studio 🤣
@@DruMarshallDrums love your content dude, i try and watch as much as i can, yeah it has turned from a quick couple of days to add some dampening, to a full blown project 3 weeks later haha!
incredible blend of classical music and ... Dirty Loops. Crazy chord changes, maybe not a drummer thing, but a piano player's dream
That seems to be the consensus! Time to expand my horizons 🎹
Amazing guys 🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
They still rule!
1:35 ok that bass tho
Future GOAT
I get the feeling of underwhelming but for me it’s more that it feels cut short. Its so epic and it was building and building. Should have been a 6 minutes song, even if nothing new was added. Just let us stay in the moment and feeling a little bit longer. Also feels like they are exploring. Jonah has said in interviews that he would like to pursue film scoring. So this to me felt like a song with that in mind. Not there best or most typical song but still love it and love that they have the courage to go on a journey and explore. Keep us guessing and keep us surprised and amazed! 🙌🏻
And maybe the cutting short is intentional… to give us a feeling of tension that can only be remedied by listening again. And the cycle repeats 🤔
Been a fan of DL for maaany years and absolutely LOVE all their stuff. This was the first time a new song didn't really do much for me. They're insanely skilled, but this was too much blipblop and six hundred different piano chords for me. Matter of taste, of course.
Blipblop is a great word 😆
@@DruMarshallDrums 🤪
You need to have a few listens before you understand. This song showcases Jonas’ piano playing and love for classical music. To me it’s a brilliant composition, not at all disappointing.
That’s a fair point! It’s definitely a song that is more like a hearty meal than ear candy. I’ll keep listening
Loved it. They always leave me hungry.
I definitely wanted more at the end. It’ll keep me coming back!
You just don't get it, man! 😭 You got a bad case of drummearosis.
@@andrewgilman8835 you’re right 😔😂
It felt underwhelming for me also but then a few more listens in it grows. But we are all different :)
Indeed 😄 I’m sure it’ll grow on me too
This was Jonah’s showcase …as a composer and keyboard man, and Dirty Loops fanatic, this was anything but underwhelming! It’s one of the shortest pieces by them, but they packed so much into it…I’ve watched it a couple dozen times and will likely watch/listen to it many more times.
I’ll keep listening! My drum-centric ears need to expand their horizons!
Loops FTW ,and the next Bond Theme...?
Oh hell yeah 😎
I agree, it’s not my favorite DL song. My take is that they are trying to evolve in different directions. I know Aron has done quite a lot of classical music composing/arranging lately in a side project, that he probably is now trying to incorporate into the DL sound. Not what the audience expected, but still kind of refreshing. I appreciate that they are trying to do something that THEY like, and don’t just do things for the “likes”. We are all here for the cool stuff, but they have to feel inspired as well, and after almost 15 years of doing what they do it’s normal to explore other styles and expressions.
Good point! They definitely aren’t chasing likes or validation with their music and we can tell, they’re simply staying true to themselves. I respect that!
If Rachmaninov came back in the 21st century and formed a rock band, would they sound like a) Dirty Loops b) Muse or c) other (please suggest).
A 100% 😎
