Irish-American Shillelagh
Step-by-step walk through on how I made this "Semi-traditional" Irish-American Shillelagh.
Shillelaghs have been made by the Irish for centuries from a variety of wood species, at different sizes, for a number of different purposes.
This walking stick model is made from Northeastern American Hornbeam as opposed to the traditional Blackthorn, filled with gold epoxy, and finished with odie's oil, wood stain and polycrylic.
The bottom is a 1 Euro "harp of Erin," resin-encased coin stopper.
Made almost entirely with hand-tools and traditional woodworking techniques.
This and other hand-crafted items are for sale at etsy.com/shop/fortorangewoodworks

How did you cut the brass after hammering it in place?
@@BlakeWaddell-qz4il I use a bi-metal hacksaw blade and then sand it down on the belt sander. I place a piece of cardboard around the brass while I'm cutting to leave a little protrusion to keep it from cutting into the wood.
@ Thank you for the info and great video!
Have you considered European buckthorn, invasive to North America and does produce sloe’s not dissimilar to blackthorn
@AndyBarnett-c7t sounds interesting. I haven't had a need to seek out other species, but I've considered planting something for the future. I'll look into it!
Nice machine and review. Just wondering if what finish it produces on trim, is it acceptable or high quality. I'm very interested in getting this machine but need a sprayer that can produce a top quality finish, so considering the Pro-level sprayers also.
Holy shit this is niche. That algoriythm really got me 😂
@LuisGarcia-cq9ls ha! Definitely a speciality item. I'll be posting these soon on my etsy page fortorangewoodworks.etsy.com

Good job
@stevedimartino683 thanks, Steve. I've used it again a few times and it has become pretty handy for a DIYer.
you probably had a drum trap thats why the cable wouldn't pass
@@Chris-lz7sx you're right - I've had to use it again since and found the drum trap first - worked much easier.
thanks for taking the time for this review. it was the right way to do it and it made my buying decision easier

U didn't say if u have th top on spray or in clog and th switch on spray or prime that would b more informative
As far as the class this one is in with Wolfcraft also at 30-40$ thats not a bad aid. I like Milesctsft overall, there items are cheap and I feel they do well with their items when considering the price range. I had one like that and eventually p/u the Rockler version which comparbly blows that out of the water...much heavier, much smoother and just better materials...but it should cause it costs 5 times the price. But thaat certainly has its place and if your ever building a benchtop with a bunch of dog holes one of those makes life and 90° so much easier. Thanks for the vid. 😊
@Spills51 Great comment! Thanks for the input... this one was a gift and honestly, it's time for a real drill press, I just don't have the space.
This tool looks awkward to use and a waste of time.
@laff000 it's actually not too bad once you run a couple tests. I don't think I'll be using it for much more than straight holes though. The angled bit seemed too difficult to control.
Does it allow you to drill at any angle you choose?
@celticman138 no, it has set increments of 45, 60, 75 and 90. I tried to set it in between one of those and it fell into the grooves of the closest preset.
@@fortorangewoodworking thanks

Awesome tool but a pain in the a$$ to put back in the coil it kept getting twisted up
@shanemiller4108 I think you're the 2nd person to mention having trouble getting it to go back.. I just used it again this weekend and had no issues. I must be getting lucky - I go real slow putting it back and "guide it" with my hand. It did twist once and pinched the hell out of my gloved finger!
@fortorangewoodworking oh man that socks be safe and alright it broke the little wire on the inside of mine
@fortorangewoodworking other then that I seen it work just after a few feet going down
Mine worked perfectly fine but at the end of getting it to go back in the son of a gun broke
I came over from the PowerDirector link. Added a 👍.
@@chrislauterbach8856 that's awesome! Thanks for the support. Hope you see something worth the trip!
Gots to b mo careful
So how is the AC working? Did you replace the sensor switch? Did it fix the issue? Or did you eventually replace the AC Compressor?
@watchumeen It's working great! I replaced the sensor switch (which was really hard to access), but did not have to replace the compressor. Thanks for the follow up question!
@@fortorangewoodworking thank you for sharing, my 2012 Sienna’s AC started intermittently not work, the AC light would blink and I’d lose cold air but after a few minutes, I’d turn it on and I’d get cold air and it would work for that drive. Now it just blinks and never blows cold, it has been 13 years and 163k miles, think I’m just going to replace the AC Compressor.
Thank you for filming this. Would you say this one is sufficient or maybe buy the next model up?
I painted the exterior of a brick building and noticed three drawbacks: 1) it clogs occasionally and needs to be re-primed. This isn't a big deal once you get used to it. 2) You have to lug your buckets around if you have to relocate the paint job. However, you'll have to do this with the upgraded model, too, as there is place for the trolley to carry your buckets as you move - they sit on the ground. 3) There is no wheeled trolley with this model. It makes it smaller and more portable, but harder to move from one spot to another. My solution - I'm going to build a small trolley that keeps the machine off the ground and can carry the buckets as I move. That being said - the price for the quality is very good and building my own carrier will still be cheaper and way more efficient for big jobs. Thanks for the question!
don't tell Rockler but I did a 371/2" panel last week 😮
Hey everyone... I realize the mistake that I made with the ABS pump. I appreciate those who politely pointed it out. Keep in mind, I'm not a master mechanic like some of you - just a guy trying to help someone through a problem. With that said - I'm a big boy and can handle criticism, but I don't tolerate negative comments on my page. There's enough bad in the world and my page was set up to be helpful. So, trolls be warned - your posts will be deleted! Thanks again for watching and for helping to make this site a positive one. - Kevin, Fort Orange Woodworking
The item he is pointing at is not the AC Compressor, that is actually the the ABS actuator assy, the AC Compressor is down below where the sensor he is pointing to is attached to the compressor, just FYI from a 30+ year Toyota MasterTech
Came here to say this! LOL

Have you ever tried not removing all the bark? I make a lot of walking sticks from hornbeam (also called blue beech where im from) and leaving some bark on makes for some beautiful sticks. I always cut my blanks extra long so hopefully i have a piece big enough for a club left over.
@tjmartin7477 I have, but not with hornbeam. I think I will, though - I really like the look of stained bark. Thanks for the comment!
Will it work on 2005 sienna?
@@troylollysaf9311 2005 models use a different flow sensor system. I can't confirm that the magnet trick will work for you.
Cool!
Thanks for the review. I have the shop series and it fell from about 30". The belt sander assembly wouldn't lock in place after that and nowhere could I find how to fix it until you told us about the allen screw. Thanks, friend. mine is fixed now.
@MrLeram12 So glad to hear it! Happy to help people!
For the “after each use” instructions mine, the 3200psi model, says to disconnect the spark plug wire, is that the same as the spark plug boot?
@Tommy-rf9sw I would double check your manual - I don't believe you need to disconnect the spark plug or wire after each use. It only recommends removing the spark plug to prep it for long term storage. The wire and the boot are different parts, fyi. Messing with the spark plug without reinstalling properly could cause you more trouble in the long run.
@@fortorangewoodworking I double checked my manual and it definitely says “spark plug wire” on step 8 on the after each use section. It’s only on the quick start guide and not in the owner’s manual(doesn’t have after each use section). I think it even applies to the 2700 psi model if you want to check. Can you tell me what’s the difference between the plug and wire, I can’t identify it on the machine?
@Tommy-rf9sw I looked at both the quick start guide and user manual for your model and did not see what you're referring to. However, the wire and the boot are different parts. There shouldn't be a reason why you would need to do anything with either of them for after use, for short term storage. You may want to consult with Westinghouse to avoid nullifying your warranty or causing damage. I'm afraid I'm a user, not a technician, such as yourself.
@@fortorangewoodworking All right, thanks for the help. I ended up contacting Westinghouse and they said the boot/wire were the same and to disconnect it to follow the after use section for proper handling.
Thanks for doing this. I'm in the same boat. I'm painting my house. My air supplied sprayer works well, but does not have nor can I find spray extensions to reach high spots. Bought the Magmun so I can use extensions. I'm planning on using mine this AM and this video saved me some time with the trial and error.
@DejanSmaic that's great! Glad it helped. Update: I used mine last weekend to paint an exterior building. Turned out great and really helped me with the learning curve.

One of my favorite tools in my shop. I use an old tall trash can with the lid off. I put an old towel on the bottom. I place a piece of plywood with a small hole in the center over the can. Prevents nails from flying out.

I love this thing
You're so cute
This is NOT my account
😭😭😭😭
Absolute piece of garbage, do NOT waste money on this thing. Cables are junk and turn to solid rust after 1 use, the "clear" holder will be rust covered and useless in no time. Owned it for 2 years and on my third cable. It will be in the trash after this cable breaks. The cable feed rollers lock up, fall off, and make them totally worthless for auto feed and retract. Love rigid, but this thing is nothing but garbage. My K400 will go nearly anywhere thing thing will and works flawlessly. Small drain get the K9-102 Flex shaft now and this sits on the truck 99.9% of the time.
1/2 of 11 is 5-1/2 1/2 of 5/8 is 5/16 5-1/2+5/16= 5-13/16.... how is that difficult?

Nope. That is not any easier than his method. In fact you have to do EXACTLY the same operation.
