The APT-E was an awesome looking train for the time. The APT-P was ugly by comparison. The prototype HST looked dated compared to what we ended up with.

Funny to see the driver still use a rag to operate the train, goes back to the old steam days I suppose, when rags helped prevent burns from the hot steam pipes and controls.

as the last person to go down the main line from the cab of the APT-E a few years back now I can honestly say its the smoothest ride ive ever had and the hope of her doing it again are not on the cards unless we get a lot of help

Did you know that when the APT project was scrapped, the technology was sold to the Italians who used it to invent the Pendolino which was bought by Richard Branson's Virgin Trains.

Only 4000 hp, seriously? I didn’t realize how primitive trains were back then. It’s a much different story nowadays, especially with Mag Lev technology, 4000 hp is absolutely nothing these days, when you have trains in excess of 14,000 hp on a single unit. Just imagine what the future holds for us? Theoretically, Mag Lev Technology has no real top speed. If built in the right environment, it can literally surpass anything that’s ever existed, capable of travelling thousands of miles per hour, but if, and only if, the proper track and environment is built to support those speeds.
