MaryKate Alsvig
Приєднався 29 лип 2022
MaryKate Alsvig is an attempt to combine all of my hobbies, joys, and labors into one business. The project began back in art school when I discovered a profound love of weaving and dyeing which was inspired by a lifestyle surrounded entirely by art. When I made the abrupt and perhaps wild decision to split off and earn a Master’s in counseling, I left my artistic side for nearly three years. While I was learning and growing as a Catholic at a school that I love, as well as becoming mentally stronger, and learning to love and serve others, still I felt an internal drought when I walked by my empty loom. Here is my attempt to regain the habit of creating and sharing my stories with people who are interested. I hope that it can be inspiring the way that I have been inspired.
Weaving Doublecloth | a baby tutorial
Doublecloth is maybe my favorite thing to do because it offers so much variety. So here's my quick exploration in all the easiest double cloth techniques I might use in a tapestry.

Weaving twill this week, and it was very very nice to be back working on the loom. It took me about 3 days to weave all this, most of which were sunny and lovely, but we also had some beautiful spring storms. I love a good midwestern spring storm.
Knitting A Tank Top | feat. chaotic energy

Y'all know I've been working on this tank top for forever and a day, but I finally finished it. I wanted to clarify despite my definite chaotic energy throughout the video that I actually do like the pattern overall, knitting it was just a beast for me. I'm just a few pieces away from a perfectly function and low-key spring/ summer wardrobe. So I'm altering some shirts into my perfect muscle tank: an old classic for me that I've been rocking since 2015. But I wanted to hem everything instead of just cutting things willy-nilly so it fits my mom era rather than punk-rock MaryKate of ages past.

Recently my dad quoted the Bible passage "the worker is worth his wages." I know I'm taking it a bit out of context but I can't help but think of all of the people contributing to our first world fashion industry who are not being paid fairly or treated with dignity. Part of my goal in making my own wardrobe is to no longer personally contribute to this, while staying on a budget. Step one: get...

Finally, the weaving video. I had trouble collecting footage for this video because I was often weaving with other things going on around me, which normally I enjoy but it makes for a clunky video. Chapter 2: Waiting for Odysseus | An Artist's Search for Inspiration
I came back to watch this again, the painted warp looks so lovely. when i am done with the diamonds, i will try my luck with a cornish coast colours inspired painted warp. so there will be all kinds of blue for sky and sea and some really bright yellow for lichen and greens and some dark grey for the grass and the rocks. In my head it looks good.
That sounds beautiful! I can see those colors together all telling a story
Me again, just here to thank you again for sharing your craft, you made me try new things and made me confident about little mishaps, they are good. They teach me things. Also, from the bottom of my heart thank you for not playing music while you explain things. Being blessed with APD, I very much appreciate that. Have a wonderful day and a smooth move. Greets from across the water, you are a gem! Su / Pinguinpullover
Very interesting video. Did you home make this machine ? Best Regards
I bought the loom from The Woolery. It's a Schacht!
Is your beater on backwards the race is in the front not the back like you have it
Hahaha yeah, I'm pretty sure it is backwards. I put it on front-facing and it made this obnoxious thumping noise every time I moved it, so i just switched it around. I'm going to take some time to figure out what's going on with that as well as the sticking shafts before I start my next warp. But honestly it works just as well backwards, so I'm not going to stress it.
Very cool!!
Good afternnon. You are very cool. I like watching your videos. From Russia with love.
Hello MaryKate, it is 8 am on Saturday as I am watching this (after a very short night) and this time the weaving process appears to be physically demanding, as well as mentally. At least for my brain after not sleeping enough. :) The cloth looks very interesting and pretty! Anything double-sided is cool, you flip it over andf it´s a different piece. I espevially like the pillow-idea. So clever! I am trying diamond twill on my rigid heddle loom and i think i used the wrong yarn for my warp, it gets stuck on itself in the slots so now i have to work with one permanent pickup stick (on 3, to get the slot threads up) and one that i insert every so often (on 2, to keep the slot theads down). But I like the pattern and weaving is not supposed to be a speed race. Well, not for me, anyhow. If I have a nice length for a table runner by the end of August, it´s fine. I am sorry to see that your loom still gets stuck. That is such a bother. Be happy, be safe, I will be watching this again now, Until next time, Su / Pinguinpullover P.S. Best wishes for the move, may it go smoothly!
I've definitely had yarn stick like that before! I find it's really common with wool, just because it's so naturally grippy. It's good that you don't mind being patient with the process, that's half of weaving for me. I'm sorry you had such a short night! Everything is always a little harder (and the brain seems to think a bit slower) when I'm sleep deprived. I hope you are able to find time for a nap or some extra rest.
👋👍 нравится ваш станок. Как купить такой станок , дайте пожалуйста адрес. Благодарю .
Hi! I bought this on the Woolery website. I think the Yarn Barn or Webs might sell them as well.
I am in China, I love to watch your videos
Thanks for posting. I’m just starting with my baby wolf. And love your socks!!!!
Thank you! They're perfect for weaving because they have little sticky patches on the bottom, so they don't slide all over.
This is so restful to watch. ❤
I love the way you interrupt yourself to respond to Max. In the long run, that will give him the feeling of security and trust that every one of us needs to thrive.
MaryKate, posting this video was the coolest thing to do, it shows all of us that we need to be easy on ourselves when we make mistakes - and we need to be confident enough to admit that we are not perfect. Also you have really cool green eyes. I do hope that does not sound too creepy. All the best, Su
Weaving and mistakes go hand in hand 😅 Not creepy! It's really sweet of you. My eyes actually vary between blue and green depending on the light and the colors around me
Me again sorry.. may I ask, what do you do with the cloth once it´s done? To me, this looks like perfect project bags for any knitting or crochet project ;) Also, did you solve the sticky frames problem? If not, maybe you might try rubbing a little bit of bar soap on them where they touch wood . I use that trick for drawers in cabinets that are a bit hard to open and close and it works wonders. Have a wonderful weekend, Su
This was just for practice, so I don't have a plan for the cloth. It could be cool sewn into a bag or something, I'll keep that in mind. I have not solved the issue, nor have I tried bar soap. Clever! I'll try it before my next project and see if it helps
this is amazing... Thank you so much for sharing! I just bought a second heddle for my little loom (Kromski harp) and i can´t wait to get into a tangled mess ... You make it look so easy and natural. I never made a granny square but i have seen many pretty things made from them, including a cardigan. So, happy crochet and i am sure you will make something lovely. Be safe, be happy Su
It will feel easy and natural for you soon too! It just takes a minute to get into a rhythm
@@marykatealsvig Once a have the loom all set up, I do hope that will happen, but alas, I neet to try to determine what I can do, right?
@@Pinguinpullover that's true! A necessary step
It amazes me on how you are able to adapt..
I love your weaving and the colors you've been using!! Always good to see you again.
It's funny, I almost never use orange, but I've been really enjoying it
the unapologetic multicrafter. me.
Hello, Mary Kate, I do see what you said about dressing a loom being like yoga, but i really have to be in right mindset to do it. So, with the warp you have there, as i am right now, i would be completely overwelmed. All the more do I enjoy watching you dressing the loom in these gorgeous colours. Maybe one day I find the inner calm place to begin such a challenge. The result is so lovely, it is always worth the effort. Thank you for letting me sit and enjoy your craft. All the best, Su
I'm glad you enjoyed watching! I agree sometimes you have to be in a right mindset. It wasn't always so peaceful when I was doing it as a homework assignment 😅
I find this endlessly amazing.
That's so heartwarming to hear! Thank you 😭
Hello Marykate . Lovely weaving I am enjoying seeing all the variations together in one sample, to compare the beautiful effects. Hope that your house move is going smoothly. Best wishes to you.
I've missed you, happy to see you back weaving...have you moved yet?
We're in progress! It's going to be a long move lol
I’ve just recently been recommended your videos and I’ve been watching a lot. Your videos are so relaxing. I LOVE that you’ve been weaving with orange!!! Orange doesn’t get enough love. Orange, green, and white are three of my favorite colors (I’m actually tablet weaving a belt with those three colors right now).
That's awesome! I agree, orange doesn't get enough love
Very nice thank you loom like you have is a dream for me 🤗
It's a lovely loom! I hope you can get one someday too ❤️
Fun fact, I attended SCAD in 1989 and studied Historic Preservation. Lol
Oh how cool!
Just so you know, you just saved my day with this tutorial :) I was rather desperate and at a loss as to what to make for a family member´s birthday and this is just perfect. I have loads of lovely scaps of homespun .. Thank you for posting this - and all your other videos - I do love the tank top it looks just lovely, as do you. Remember, never put a timer on crafts. It will take all the fun out of it and that, in turn, will reflect in the outcome. The only thing one really needs to put into craft is love. All the best, Su / Pinguinpullover
I love this! I also collect little scraps so having something to make them into is so nice. Thank you for your encouragement 😊
Do you ever get about halfway through, and suddenly think of some even more inspiring colourways? and want to finish this one off quickly...
Hahaha yes! All the time. Or I find a new pattern and want to try that but I'd have to change my threading.
@@marykatealsvig Lol. It's as though the mere act of weaving itself lets new inspiration bubble up. Very meditative in a way 🙂 I learnt new techniques watching your video, many thanks!
Love your cooking vids! (:
Those waffle things look yummy. Question from a total newb, if the loom sticks like that, can you use heddles that are further apart or does that not help?
That's actually a really good idea! Could be worth giving a shot. I've never had this particular sticking issue before, but I'm pretty sure it's just because the loom is so new. My hope is after time it will move more smoothly.
Love it! It looks great on you.
Thank you so much! I am really happy with how it turned out 😄
Great video! Will you be moving out of the country? I love your sweater.
Thank you! Not out of the country, just off the mainland. We're heading to Hawaii!
@@marykatealsvig You're welcome and how exciting!!
Very nice loom! I picked up a used 4 shaft Leclerc that I'm trying to finish a project on. There are a lot of videos on UA-cam that should help you get reacquainted with a Loom. Looking forward to seeing if you met your Thanksgiving goal. 👍👍👍
I love Leclerc, their products are so durable. Good luck on your project! UA-cam is great for learning and relearning just about everything 😁
I love your channel. Just wondering if you ever explained why you have fused fingers and toes?? A syndrome?
I'm glad to hear you like my channel. It's a lot of fun but a lot of work too, so it's good to know others enjoy it. I have an unexplained birth defect is all, nothing fancy 😊

Great video. Nice to see one being put together.
I love that weaving book. It's my favorite since I have a vintage 45" floor loom from an unknown maker.
It's my favorite too, it has a little of everything!
Beautiful music today...
Wow! So helpful.
Can you not just cut out the two extra threads and just pull them out or would that make a gap at that spot?
That would put a gap in my pattern, because I have it threaded through the heddles first in a 1234 pattern, so if I cut out 34 the pattern would look like 121234. Which would fix the reed but create an even bigger problem. I could take out a whole block of the heddles but then I would have a gap in the reed. It's the unwinable conundrum.
Love watching your life. I'm back to weaving, started when mine were Max's age, fun times. Just starting to warp my Baby Wolf and saw this one, timely! Since you share so much, I'd like to share one. I found a few unused curtain rods and am reusing them to support the lea sticks. Quick, works great! I was given a 72" LeClerc, mid 60s; just finished all the parts that needed replacing. Repaired warp and finished that a few days ago. Keep doing what you love. I love watching. Wishing you well.
That's clever with the curtain rods! Then you don't have to use waste yarn, or bother with getting it all tied on just right. I like that!
So simple dear!! You didn’t worry about no raddle!! Love it
I literally get so happy when you upload! ❤
Thank you for sharing! I love your videos since they are so peaceful for me to watch!
Ok, I hope what you learn the most as a new mom😊, weaving is your wonderful gift to yourself and your family! Nurturing yourself and then you are able to nurture those around you! Don’t set timer on you or your projects 😢. You absolutely deserve this opportunity to grow and thrive and everyone can enjoy this wonderful journey together. Trust me we all will enjoy the journey together with you❤
This is so sweet of you! You're totally right about setting a timer, I appreciate that
Sending lots of love! ❤
Thank you!!
less talk more done!.
The colors you used are so pretty.
I want to start making bread and tortillas!! Can't wait until you get your project on the loom. Please share if you can. When are you moving?
I am hoping to share the project, it's just a matter of getting it going. We're probably moving in the summer, though there is a lot to be decided about that yet.
If you are moving again did you take a picture of the packing on your loom so you can redo it when you need it?
Yes! And I kept all the original packaging. I'm definitely nervous to ship it but hopefully if I do it all okay it will make the trip safely.
Hello MaryKate. I enjoy all your videos, thank you for sharing . A great idea with the fabric swatches for your little one to play with. Would be good too with little scraps of quilting fabric. I am watching from Devon in England.
I hadn't considered quilting scraps, but that's a good idea! Thanks for sharing :)
I think it's great what you're doing! Are you in the US or from the US??
Both, in and from the US :)
