    Wikipedia has an article on Joke chess problems, which notes this one (along with some I find funnier), and notes that in fact the rules already required the king and rook to be on the same rank, the refence being directly to the FIDE rules, in officially in French at the time though that has since changed. In a different puzzle that allegedly motivated a rule change, a white pawn reaches the eight rank and promotes to a black knight.

      White can move the bishop to f6 and check the king, which is also a discovered attack on the queen.

    • @TruthSurge
      @TruthSurge 4 дні тому

      @@Axiomatic75 then knight takes that bishop. if rook takes knight, you are still about equal. But I guess then white will take the black bishop at the end of the capture chain so... I guess you just have to go through each branch and see which one turns out great for black. ? Man, why do I watch chess vids????

    • @Axiomatic75
      @Axiomatic75 4 дні тому

      @TruthSurge If the knight takes that bishop, you of course don't recapture the knight, you capture the queen with the rook. Knight can then capture the rook but you still have a queen for a rook.

    What about knight to c2? I get it to play out pretty well, assuming white finds the only counter queen takes c2. If they don't, it's a fast win with queen takes a2.

    • @dw_bh5009
      @dw_bh5009 5 днів тому

      I mean, thats why I really don't like some chess puzzles, because they seem stupid to me. Black is already completely winning in multiple ways, so the puzzle is just to find a best forced mate. But black also can just take the bishop (g5) with an attack on the rook - its free and trade everything after that. So what is the point of this complicated exchange of material if you can just straight up be up a bishop and force your opponent to trade everything and be up material with a position of strong attack on white's king.

    • @Axiomatic75
      @Axiomatic75 4 дні тому

      @@dw_bh5009The bishop isn't free as it's guarded by both the rook and the queen. White would just recapture with the rook and be up the exchange.

    • @Axiomatic75
      @Axiomatic75 4 дні тому

      You mean knight to f2 I presume. I don't see how that's winning.

    • @dw_bh5009
      @dw_bh5009 3 дні тому

      @@Axiomatic75 yeah, you are right, i somehow missed the queen. But still black can just go pawn h6 or rook to g8 or any other slow improving move to his position, because he is already completely winning, he can easily improve in 2-3 moves and come with a massive attack on white and white barely has anything, in fact i don't see any real threats to black besides white pawns beeing a little bit close. So, would anyone besides super GM really play a move like king to g8 instead of just slowly improving your position and coming with an inevitable attack on black.

    • @Axiomatic75
      @Axiomatic75 3 дні тому

      @dw_bh5009 I just put this position into Stockfish. It evaluates the position as -5.2 after the King move, -1.2 if bxh2 and -1.2 if Nf2+. All other moves lead to an equal position at best. So the King move is the only move that gives a winning advantage. Edit: It's a very hard puzzle so yeah, probably only a GM or IM would likely find this move in a game. That's why it's a hard puzzle.
