My name is Aaron and I decided to start HippieVanMan.com to share my adventures in a 1979 Volkswagen T2 Transporter. The journey is scheduled to start in Mid-2013.
With HippieVanMan.com, I am planning to create a video web series as well as update the site and social media frequently with other content including photos, blogs and maybe even some contests.
Hippie Van Man is about sharing the experience, inspiring people to live their dreams and live in the now. It's also about the spirit of adventure and spreading smiles and good vibes 1km at a time.

Another update on my interior build
Last update I made was a few weeks back after I had upholstered and mocked-up my rear benchseat, and figured out how I was going to get the backrest to fold down. Initially my plan was to hard-install the seat section to the wood frame, but thought that would limit the usability /accessibility of the under seat storage.
After rethinking it, I came up with a new concept. It involved completely unapolstering the seat :( (ouch) in order to reduce the width by about two inches so there was enough room to allow the seat to flip. I then reupholstered it, and finally, had to figure out how to hinge it to clear the back rest.
All-in-all very happy with the result thus far. Really excited to get this build completed and get her back on the road exploring.

Nothing crazy, just a short couple clips thrown together to show the sequence of entering the Baja Ferry from La Paz to Mazatlan. This is really to augment my blog post on the experience, found here; hippievanman.com/taking-the-hippie-van-on-the-baja-ferry-from-la-paz-to-mazatlan/

All fired up! 79 VW 2.0L FI Rebuild

Finally fired up my motor after completing my first independent rebuild. Very gratifying. I went to adjust the timing the following day and kept running into issues with the distributor coming disengaged. Trying to figure out that issue now.
Engine rebuild broken head stud

The rebuild has taken a turn for the worse. I ended up snapping a stud. Time to tear down for a 3rd time in less than two months.
A hole in my head :S
Переглядів 2498 років тому
As I was preparing to do my top end install, I was closely inspecting my heads that I had sent out to a machine shop to be refurbed. I just noticed a hole under one of the stud ports. It appears to have melted through from the other side where there is a visible weld bead. There is also a second scorch hole on the outer side of the head. I tried injecting water into each hole with a syringe. It...

Making a DIY piston ring compressor tool for $1.50
Переглядів 22 тис.8 років тому
I couldn't find a piston ring compressor tool so I decided to make my own. #Update: it didn't end up working for me. I just could get it close enough. Luckily the shop the reworked my heads lent me a set of ring compressors in exchange for a mickey of whiskey lol.

Wish we had Canadian Tire down here. Maybe I’ll just move to Canada.
por 15 is paint! just paint...the prep solution they make IS diluted PA(most likely)
Is there a ramp in there?
Get your cylinders in your pistons
Dude! Where's my carr!?? Hippievanman! Less weed and more video! Where's the rest of the video!!?? It's only HALF a video!!??
Yeah heat transfers are fast but I’d pay extra for real screen printing. All the Santa Cruz reissue decks are made in Chine now and have a bad problem twisting.
Gracias por visitar mi País Amado
Far out
Hi mate, next time vlog with you phone/camera horizontally.. Makes your videos much better.
sorry about that. I usually do, not sure why I didn't on this. cheers for tuning in.
Greetings from Buffalo NY. Thinking of a van trip up to Mt Tremblant next month. Rig looks good!
Good luck. Tremblant is beautiful.
If the dist clamp is bent, it won't seat properly. (Measure the distance down the hole, and protrusion of dist shaft, might see something.) Peace.
this was so long ago now, I can't recall how it got sorted, but I think it was something minor like it wasn't seated properly.
I really think it's better to leave out the "fire rings" (What they might call a head gasket.) *Probably won't hear that on the forums, but have qiuetly built many old vws on a budget.
It's hotly debated online and in the vw community in general. valid arguments on both sides. I ended up putting them in. I'd say "next build" i might leave them out, but I'm probably going to do an electric conversion in the next couple years so it will be a non issue.
I don't know about skateboarding, but their mountain bikes are the cadillacs
Why is it made into a big C always?
Looking good mate, you must be proud of your progress. You're a little further ahead that we are ;)
Looking forward to seeing your build Ben. Where are you guys these days. I'll be heading to Mexico in a few weeks
Greetings from down in Buffalo NY. Taking my van down to FL Keys in less than a week! Your rig looks good.
Try jamming a screwdriver to push the rings into your cylinder, beat on the top of the piston with a 5lb sledge hammer. Great vid IdiotVanBum!
Did this, wiper ring caught onto the side and chipped💀. Worked well for one piston and ofc something has to go wrong so I'm just gonna make a tool and buy a new set of rings😭
@@Mazoyermotors cut a 2 liter coke bottle cut it into a 2" ban that wraps around the piston, lube it good with 2 stroke oil and use a hose clamp to compress the rings. The plastic protects the rings, works everytime!
4:02 but how you get the plastic sheet with the graphic on it?
Too bad about the heat transfers. Screen is still the best in terms of layering color. PPS does it and does it right. But as a HUGE SC fan that bought them in the 70's till now I appreciate the streamlining. My 5 ply's still look great all these years later. They skate even better. Of course my graphite slalom needs a tune up.
Put the cylinders into the pistons dude!
I clicked this cause he looked stoned, I wish he finished it. I'm cool with that,he's putting cylinders around pistons! Nice!🙂
What base paint did you use? What paint for murals? What clear? I'm doing a new vw beetle
threepers 76 been so long I don't recall. Acrylic base and mural. Two part epoxy clear. Lasted about 5 years (paint chipped in places and clear yellowed). Going to redo it soon. Better primer and clear this time
TheHippieVanMan. Appreciate the response. Did you do it all with a brush? post another video when you redo it.
threepers 76 yes, all by brush and then rolled on the clear. My best advice is spend extra time doing prep work. It will make it last. I think we rushed the prep a bit and for that reason it ended pealing up in parts (after 4 years + a drive down to South America and back). I had my van stripped down to the metal and primed by a body shop in mexico last year. Hoping to the work with the same artist again this summer to do the new mural. Will probably take it to Mexico to get clear shot on at a body shop. I think the clear we used the first time yellowed because it wasn't meant for automotive use. Lots of progress shots on Instagram @thehippievanman . I haven't been doing much video lately, however I do plan to make a video when we do the new mural in a couple months. Good luck with your paint job.
On the Stodoys site you can find many interesting plans
Are you still alive?
Carlos Z yeah. Kind of dropped off of social media recently. This past summer I started redoing the whole interior and this coming summer planning to repaint the outside. I imagine I'll follow up with more videos at some point.
Sad though, that heat transfer also includes the reissues. Just got my Jeff Grosso toybox mini in, and could not believe how bad the quality actually is, conpared to the original, which was my first ever pro board back then. Also the Natas kitten suffers on the same problem. I know these are manufactured in China, where there is simply not that great admiration for reissued design classics, obvious on a variety of products manufactured there, like lately the Nike Jordan V and IV OGs. But Nike always seems to make the wrong choices on classics, even their design changes are no gos (speaking of the Jordan V, especially the "slightly" longer tongue makes the shoe an unwearable item). In my opinion, there should be two options on reissues available. One as issued right now, and one for enthusiasts, reproducing to the original standards. I, and not only I, would spend at least double for a true repro of the real stuff.
I just recently got a reissue Corey Obrien silver/ black colorfade grim reaper. The teeth are missing in the grim reapers mouth. It looks dumb as shit. Its an ebay purchase from a skate shop, so Im hoping to exchange it for a corrected deck.....but most Ive seen online suffer the same thing.....Im not sure how you ship out a big run of collectable reissue decks, but miss the fact that the grim reapers teeth are M.I.A.
Imagining working there, I'd come in at 07:00 and not making it to my workspace til 12:00. I would just stop everywhere and admire all the Phillips designs and get lost in history. This must be the greatest place to work at in the world, for people aware of the relevance of this company for the whole thing of skateboarding, and also those being into working physical.
Beatifull city
Any travel plans??
J Brat mexico in a few weeks hopefully.
As I was watching this I'm doing the same thing, fire in the stove, and being a little creeped out being in this house all alone...thought it was weird that I couldn't get connected(resolving host) to the rv park wifi down at the bbq pit, but up here in the penthouse I get about three bars and actually connected. Glad it isn't as cold as when you were here. Hope your travels were safe.
Thee Banana enjoy. Make sure you have enough wood to make it through the night. I ran out lol. Safe travels
I love the kombi
Good luck you are an inspiration to me I'm from Wales in the UK and it would be nice to go experience what the world has to offer
U should check out laporte Indiana
This is awesome! I'm definitely going to follow your adventures!
just need a dance floor and a stripper pole and your good
Nice video guys! Have a look at mine I just made about the Mae Hong Son Loop too, I'm sure you'll like it :D
The title is misleading. No use of acid is displayed. Maybe goto to college and learn English, get a job and buy a new car.
Silly comment and rather unnecessary. There is no 'How to' moniker or equivalent, he simply discusses '...refurbishing a Volkswagon engine bay with Phosphoric Acid'. I'm not sure a more suitable video title could be sort. Please be encouraging to people who take the time to share their experiences on here. It's an incredibly valuable resource, perhaps the greatest learning tool our civilisation has known. Let's treat contributors with respect. Four years after the original post I have stumbled on here as I embark on my own project. I for one am grateful that this particular hippie took the time to share!
Thanks for sharing..subbed..
start making decks in the usa again. drop the novelty gimmick runs like simpsons and star wars boards for chrisakes. Either get serious with longboards or drop the "cruzer" crap all together. Get your balls back. And make Santa Cruz great again.
Get serious with longboards!!! That's hilarious! Almost all boards are made overseas now.
Idiot
hello! We just put out a video on the Baja Ferry as well. We are currently in Costa Rica. Thought I'd see how far along you are. If your any thing like us you're behind in your uploads too 😉
Seriously, thank you so much!
That's amazing 😉 I knew Coyote when I lived in San Diego! Never knew if he was effing with me or if he really had some secret intel 😂
Hellofaguy lol. I stopped in at the ranch this year on my way down to Mexico. Didn't appear anyone was home.
