An Early Autumn Ride. On a Kona Sutra LTD.
A wet gravel ride in the Thuringian Forest on my trusty 2017 Kona Sutra LTD. One of my favourite loops year round. After this year's extreme dry summer this was an extra delightful experience. I'm happy to answer any questions about the ride and bike, so comment if you like to. Cheers, Christian

After some requests I'm giving a brief update about the Kona Sutra Ltd. I'm talking about changes and my overall thoughts on this bicycle.
My handbuilt Allroad/Gravel Bike: The Big Forest Frameworks "KK"

I visited a frame building course at bigforestframeworks.com in Potsdam, Germany and built this crossbike for my girlfriend (now wife :)). I call it the "Kross Kween" :) It's a really special bike for me as I planned and built it almost compeletely myself. Also the feeling of riding a self made frame is a special thing. Feel free to ask about the course and the bike if you are interested. It wa...
Kona Sutra Ltd 2017 tire clearance
This video is about the tire clearance of the Kona Sutra Ltd. frame, 2017 model. I show the tires that fit into the frame, which are 2.2 / 2.4 Maxxis Ardent mountainbike tires on the stock 23mm WTB Frequency rims. I love the monster truck feeling this setup gives you! Check out www.konaworld.com for more infos about this lovely ride! Feel free to ask your questions!
Short but nice.
where is this? (if you don't mind me asking) its beautiful.
Sure Luis, thanks for asking! Its in Central Germany, the region is called Thuringian Forest and the route starts and finishes in a village called Elgersburg. Right now the Biathlon World Championship takes place in Oberhof, which is a town about 10km from there. Cheers! Christian
@@CL-dh2mf Wow that's neat! i hope to be able to visit someday as this is a very peaceful/gorgeous path. Thank you for your reply as well. cheers from Chicago
@@luis-jk2cq Cool to hear you are from Chicago! I was a big Bulls fan in my youth. Would love to visit the Windy City one day and maybe run the Chicago Marathon, too.😊
Hello. Do you know the MAX clearance for both front and rear tire on this SUTRA LTD ? you mention 2.4 and 2.25 ? Thanks a lot
Exactly thats what I had for 29er (2.4 front 2.25 in the back). Its already tight. 2.2 is the sweet spot for this bike for me on MTB trails.
@@CL-dh2mf GREAT ! thanks for the info !
Thanks!
Orange frame with tan walls looks very nice. Thanks for the vid
Where's that friendly accent from?
Hey! Its from Thuringia/Germany!✌
Are these 700c (29) or 650b? I'm guessing 700c but confirmation would be great! Thanks!
Yes, those are 29er MTB tires. Greetings!
Was the tyre 2.4" with 700c (29) or 650b rims? Are they 700c (29) or 650b in this video? I think I'm going to buy this bike to use for the Race To The Rock.
29er all the way! Sorry for the late response! Cheers, Chris
Hello, frame size?
Hi, it is an 56cm frame. I'm 1.80m tall. Greetings!
@@CL-dh2mf standover?
@@steptoorew Sorry, can't tell you exactly. Depending on how low or high you mount the stem it can vary from almost level to the saddle to maybe 8cm of drop.
@@CL-dh2mf in the middle of the upper frame tube?
@@steptoorew No, I was talking about the height difference between saddle and handlebar. Sorry can't tell you anything else.
MfG!
How did you get this bike in Germany? I live in France and am seriously considering the 2019 model of the LTD for bikepacking in years to come
Hi! I ordered it at hibike.de and picked it up. I still highly recommend it! Cheers!
Thanks for this info, this should be mandatory from every manufacturer, when building a bike, always post a video with max tyre clearance.
Great video, thanks for posting. Is the rear tire an ardent 29 2.25? What pressure are you running in the rear? I put a 29 x 2.3 maxxis minion ss on my rear (same bike, 2018 LTD though) and it rubs on the frame really slightly when i go over 45 psi...
Hi, yes it was a 2.25. I never went over 2.0 bar and the tire never rubbed against the frame. Always tubeless though! Greetings!
45 psi is a lot
looks great
Nice work! I'm impressed you were able to build this in only 4 days.
Thanks! Yes with the good instructions and helping hands from Robert it was possible without any before practice. I didnt do the fork and paintjob though. Cheers!
I want it an steel bike but very hard to find or to expensive. Finally I get a Al / Carbon fork. Kona Rove NRB. Amazing bike. Very good with those 650b tires. I feel very good on tarmac and amazing in the gravel. I will do a review in my channel if you're interested.
What you think of the Rove nrb? Is it light enough to race it?
Road bike cleats?
Kenko Kenko Yes. But like many other things it changed. Now there are Ritchey SPD pedals.
Nice bike, sorry which size is it?
Ferran Espigole Gonzalez Thank you! It is a 56cm frame. Greetings!
C L And height?
@@vadoscz2034 I'm 1.80m. Cheers!
@@CL-dh2mf I'm 182 but can only get hold of the 54cm frame. Would love to know if you think this is pushing it ?
@@paulturner-yt I personally wouldn't want to ride a 54cm frame. Try finding a 56cm frame,it should fit great for you as well. Cheers!
they certainly look cool!
Stunning!
Schickes Rad!
UweGranzow.films Dankeschön!:-)
I ve got the bike and its awesome! Your vids made me choose the sutra and its absolutely a very nice bike! Steel has a soul 😎.enjoy your rides
Cool, thats so nice - congrats to the new bike! Is it the new 2018 model? Happy trails to you mate! :-)
+C L thanks! I ve got the same bike 2017 model at a bargain price!
I have 27mm sun ringle rims. I'm trying to mount Maxxis Ardent 2.25 like you do, but there seems to be frame interference.(because more wide rim) What do you think?
Thanks for the update. Looks like an enjoyable ride.
Nice update ! I m waiting the same bike at christmas. Weight of the bike for your your current set up? Thanks!
Antonis Kapnoulas Thanks! Weight still around 12kg, never weight it exactly though. Enjoy your Christmas!:-)
should have gotten a salsa deadwood if you wanted huge tires! on a bike like this 2.0 is big enough, you must never ride in the mud hahaha
Mark Wells Aaah, the Deadwood...should be alot of fun! Do you ride one? You are right with probably issues on extreme muddy terrain and I'm still looking for the sweet spot in tire size. Still the Sutra ticked most of my boxes and I'm super happy with it so far. Cheers!
No there is a crazy amount of climbing around my area so a lighter bike is nessasary, but I'm considering a Kona so I can do more MTB with my typical gravel ride, I want to be able to use 45c max, I prefer 40c usually, I do everything in one ride, just not tricky single track
Beatifull!
Antonis Kapnoulas Thanks man!
nice bike! what size is it?
Antonis Kapnoulas Hi, the frame is size 56, i'm 1.80m. Fits great!
C L Im 187 cm tall .should I go with the 56 or 54 size?my inseam is 87 cm.Do you clear the top tube stand over height?thanks !
Antonis Kapnoulas Good question! My inseam is 84cm. I think you have to decide between 56 and 58cm frame. 54cm should be too small. Yes, I easily clear the top tube as its sloped. Greetings!
Looks very cool. I'm waiting for the same bike but 2019 model. I am 1'87 and I doubt between 56 or 58 size
@@ferranespigonzalez What frame did you choose ? I'm also 187... would like to know.
Please do an update on this, I am deciding between this and a trek 920.
MrIHave Tourettes I can do that! Maybe tomorrow I'll find some time for that. What are you particular interested in?
What's the weight of the bike? Nice bike and nice setup btw :)
Hi there and thanks, I used the bathroom scales to weigh it - according to this method it's around 12.2kg ready to go in this setup. cheers, Chris
C L thanks!
That's beautiful! Well done.
3Daddicted Thank you very much!😊
Nice set up. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking for something similar. I'd like to try some rocky mountain trails but prefer closer to a road bike feel. Looking forward to a follow up video.
3Daddicted I had the same reasons for buying the bike and it works great on trails. Already did a lot riding with mountainbikers and they are always impressed about the capabilities of the Kona. Basically this is my mountainbike beacause I dont like flat bars. In september Im even doing a mountainbike marathon race on the Kona, but just for fun. Greeetings!
any idea what max width of fenders you can fit on this? Could I fit the Sks Bluemels 58mm on the sutra?
E-Hamster I can't say it for sure, but with over 60mm clearance front and rear, fenders in the same width should fit as well. Greetings!!!
Looks very cool, i hope you go ahead and record some of your rides! :-)
Dermot O'Grady Thank you! Now I'm more motivated to do so!😜
Apologies for my english! I wanted to say Maxxis Ardent TIRES, not WHEELS. Wheels are the stock WTB Frequency 23mm by the way.
