    Awesome bike! I just bought a 2017 that I will be taking to the track soon. I will be changing the rear from the stock 160/60 to the 170/60. Were you satisfied with the results of your 170/60?

    • @bstkmoto1334
      @bstkmoto1334 2 роки тому

      Congrats on the purchase! Generally, yes, I was satisfied - I do think that it's the size that fits the rear best. The only issue is that the tire choices are really limited for 170/60. I ran the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT and for my level they work perfectly fine. Good grip in the dry, and even in cooler / light rain conditions, good enough to stay out there - you won't have to sit out any sessions like those running slicks. Way more feedback than OEM tires, way more eager to turn in, taller rear profile puts more weight on the front which is good (I find the SV is quite rear-biased in stock form). Enjoy!

    Nice riding! How easy was it to install the K-Tech cartridge on the forks? It seems that cartridge is listed by retailers as fitting the earlier generation models but not the 3rd gen (2017-2021). Did you have to change the installation procedure at all or do the original installation instructions still apply?

    • @bstkmoto1334
      @bstkmoto1334 2 роки тому

      It's the only part that I did not install myself. I went to a suspension expert near Toronto called Accelerated Technologies. Great shop. During the install they found that it was not a perfect fit and had to fabricate a couple of spacers. Other than that, I don't recall any hiccups. They work really well at the track - worth the upgrade to get things properly dialed in. Unnecessary for the street in my opinion - the stock forks actually work quite well for everyday riding.

      I'm 5' 10" and around 180-185 lbs. I think it's an excellent choice for an occasional track bike. I believe the latest SVs have preload adjusters at the front as well as the rear. If so, once you adjust preload and get your sag figures in the ballpark it will work just fine for novice group. I would recommend the SV650X over the standard as it puts you in a much better position for the track with the stock clip-ons. Once you're pushing out of novice group and into intermediate group, there are a number of options for suspension upgrades depending on your budget.

      Yes, 170/60 is actually the best size for a 5 inch rim and totally safe to mount. The only issue with it is that there aren't so many options for sports / track day tires - lots of great sports touring options though. I would recommend it on the 3rd gen SV. Ambient air temps are around 100 F and if you factory in the humidity it bumps up to 115 F. I have a street 17' SV650 with upgraded suspension but it is for sale. Nice! Is your bike track only? I also saw in your previous video you mounted a 170 rear, now you are back on 160. Isn't the last one a better fitment for the agility of the sv650?

    • @bstkmoto1334
      @bstkmoto1334 4 роки тому

      Yup, track only now. I was unsure at the beginning of the season but after a few days out, I find that I enjoy track way more than street. I uploaded the videos in reverse order actually, so this track day was in August on the OEM 160/60 rear and the other in September on the 170/60 rear. The 170s are definitely better for agility. I struggled a bit on corner entry / turn in here with the 160s, but with the 170s the bike corners more naturally and I sometimes underestimate how well it will turn in and hold a line through the turn. Just wish there were more track day options out there in the 170/60 size!

    • @frankp1196
      @frankp1196 4 роки тому

      @@bstkmoto1334 Actually 160 weights less and it's easier to turn, but being narrower you have the sensation to fall. 170 (and 180) is more stable and gives you more confidence in braking and accelerating, but you pay being slower in changing directions. I am thinking too of converting my 2020 to track only! Did you remove ABS and other things? Why aren't you using fairings?

    • @bstkmoto1334
      @bstkmoto1334 4 роки тому

      @@frankp1196 It's a strange one. It's true, 160 is a lighter tire, but Suzuki fitted a 5" rear wheel on the 3rd Gen SV (and Gladius), not a 4.5" as was done in previous generations. So the ideal size for a 5" wheel is 170/60. The 160/60 gets a bit stretched on the rim, giving it a flatter profile. At this track day at CTMP, I was at the absolute edge of the rear tire already at moderate lean angles, so for me it was evidence of that. So I gave the 170 a shot and it works much better. It makes for a great track bike - you'll really enjoy it. I'm a track novice but learning so much every session out there. With the 2020 you'll have 4-piston front brake calipers as well which are much better than the old 2-piston ones (on the 2016-2018). I haven't removed ABS - they haven't kicked in once - I don't think I'm at the level where it interferes with my riding. I replaced the headlight at the front with a short fairing made by S2 Concept. Other than that, I don't really need other fairings for track days.

      @@bstkmoto1334 I didn't know about the 5" rims! Thanks! I will definitely give a try to a 170. How tall are you? @@frankp1196 I'm 5'10". Yes, for your height I think something like that could work better, and maybe some changes at the rear so you can scoot back to tuck in - something like the Hot Bodies tail. One more tip if you're looking to set it up for track. I installed aftermarket rear sets and then found a problem that the exhaust hanger / passenger peg gets in the way of my right foot, at the heel, which makes it difficult to position the foot properly on right turns. If you see the M4 race mount exhaust, you'll notice that the angle of the exhaust hanger is very different to others, almost horizontal. This is to avoid your foot hitting the exhaust hanger and it's the only one I've seen designed like that. The other option is to fabricate your own exhaust hanger out of some aluminum flat plate to avoid the conflict.

    How do you like the Gilles Tooling handlebars? I test-rode an SV650X with the clip-ons but ended up settling on the regular model because I preferred the colour and found the riding position of the X to be too aggressive for longer rides. If you've been on an SV650X, would you say these handlebars are as aggressive as that, or more of a middle-ground between the regular SV650 bars? I'm not looking to track the bike just yet, so I'm looking for something still oriented for the street. How easy was the installation? Also for your tire: were you able to go up to 170 profile tire without changing the wheel? How does it feel?

    • @bstkmoto1334
      @bstkmoto1334 4 роки тому

      All good questions. I love the handlebars. I would say that they are quite similar to the SV650X clip-ons. The installation instructions that came with the bars were great - specific to the SV650 and lots of pictures to help you through the steps which you wouldn't normally get with aftermarket handlebars. Aaah the tires... So the OEM 160/60, great for stability, not so much for agility, slow to turn in, stretched on the 5" rear rim. I'm a novice track day rider but really struggled on corner entry - this is with aftermarket suspension and good sag figures - see the other video I posted at CTMP - I really had to get the bike slowed right down to get it to turn in - frustrating. Was also on the edge of the rear tire at moderate lean angles, so I had to try something else. So then, the 170/60 size is the best fit for the 5" rear we have on the SV. If you're riding street, there's lots of great sports touring options out there. Track days, Michelin Pilot Power 2ct seems to be the only choice unfortunately. So I tried them out. It took me a few sessions to get the suspension dialed in - with the taller profile at the rear I found there was too much weight up front initially so added more preload to the front. I ended the day at 35mm rider sag at the front and 28mm rider sag at the rear. That felt good. Corner entry and turn in improved significantly and I found myself underestimating how well the bike would turn in - less stable but there's always a trade off between agility and stability I suppose. Much happier with this setup. With all that being said, I don't know how it would feel on the OEM suspension - I suspect with softer spring rates you might not feel as drastic a change as I did but I can't say for sure...
