The Tolka River in Dublin, by kayak.
November 2024. The video shows the navigable parts of the river. Starting at Weir House at high tide. The minimum draft on this kayak with just me and no extra gear is approximately 30cm. That was the depth of the water at Weir House. The boat bottomed out at that point.

One of the reasons I got a SOF was because of the light weight and ease of carrying. When you've been on the water for a few hours, every kilogram makes a difference. At this location there are very tricky and sharp boulders on one side of the portage. It wouldn't have been possible in a plastic sea kayak to carry the boat over my shoulder and still navigate those rocks. Kayak built by Valkyrie...

The joys of a light boat!
No fuss whatsoever!
The NTA are another poor NGO. Cyclistists need to avoid lights which are only there because of cars. They solution of putting a light for cyclists could work if only the cars were stopped and all cyclists could cross over each other. The lights slow you down so much that you might as well be in a car.
I don't understand why they can't put the drains under the kerb like I see in so many other places. Also the East Wall Road surface??? That's not a finisned product surely 😮
Very tight squeeze hate to meet a fellow cargo going opposite direction
How many people a year are killed by cars versus how many people are killed each year by bicycles. There probably isn't information on the health effects of the noxious fumes emitted by by cars.
There are lots of studies of the negative health effects due to air pollution, including that caused by internal combustion engines and tire and brake dust. Approximately 1.5K people die in Ireland every year due to air pollution. Tens of thousands of people die in the UK each year due to air pollution caused by vehicles alone. And that's not even including the negative health impacts from air pollution, even if it doesn't kill you. Cardiovascular disease is liked with air pollution. Degenerative brain disorders (eg alzheimers) is linked to air pollution. Reporductive health is negative impacted by air pollution. Growth in children is stunted by air pollution. Brain development in children is stunted by air pollution... and the lists go on and on and on. AND... there are yet even more negative effects due to car-culture outside those of air pollution.
You and the F1 handling those conditions very well, they are great boats.
adorable!
Nice ride, thank you for posting the video. The route doesn’t look bad at all.
Hi there, I'm curious how the kayak has held up for you as I'm trying to compare Nautiraid to Nortik. Have you had any issues with the frame specifically the various connectors? Some of the wood pieces look rather thin to me from the videos I have been able to find, have any split in half for you? And what about the skin, is it durable? Anything else you can tell me about the kayak would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Skin-on-frame kayaks are 100% seaworthy. Remember the original users of these types of boats depended on them for their lives. I've had no issues with the framing pieces on the nautiraid. You do have to take care of this type of boat more than a rigid-construction boat made from fiber-glass, plastic or carbon, to ensure that it dries out properly and that you store it properly. But as far as performance is concerned, these boats are totally capable. But it all depends on your needs and what type of boat you want, what type of conditions you'll be using the boat in, how far you might need to carry the boat (weight), etc. Skin-on-frame boats flex in the water, whereas rigid boats don't. The slight flexing in skin-on-frame makes these types of boat feel different to rigid boats, and I prefer skin-on-frames because of that. But... everyone has different preferences.
@@citizenwolf8720 Much appreciated! So you haven't had to replace any pieces or tighten anything? Sounds like there is no maintenance necessary is that right? What about setting up, I understand that the first time(s) can take a while but having owned the kayak for a couple of years now how fast would you say you go from bag to ready for launch without actually rushing?
If you care for it properly, then the wooden elements will last a long time. I haven't replaced anything. And if somehow you did manage to beak a segment, you could just replace it with a suitable piece of wood. How fast is the set-up? I can't actually answer because there are lots of elements involved in each launch-point. Remember, even with a plastic boat, there's always time taken up faffing about with other things, and those other things that need to be done get mixed up in the process of getting the boat on the water. So I can't say how long it takes just to assemble the boat. If that's something that'll bother you, then just go with a rigid boat with no assembly required. A folding boat like the Nautiraid is sometimes the only option if you need to transport the boat via a train, or plane or if you have very limited storage at home. If these things aren't a consideration, then you may as well look at a non-folder. My needs have changed sinceI got the Nautiraid and now I have more storage available than I did, so I also have a non-foldable skin-on-frame. The frame on my new boat is also wooden and I have no concerns about durability. @@itotallycare
@@citizenwolf8720 Alright I really appreciate the information. I am indeed in a position where I need a foldable kayak as I don't have the space to keep a hard shell. It's not entirely clear to me that I wouldn't want a foldable/skin on frame kayak even if I did have the space for a hard shell actually as I would still appreciate being able to travel with it and store it out of the way, it will have to depend on how well the foldable/skin on frame paddles in comparison to a hard shell. I was going to say that I would subscribe for more and longer footage of you using this kayak but I guess you have moved on from it for the most part.
As for performance: There are many other considerations aside from just whether a kayak is foldable or not that determine the performance characteristics. Nautiraid kayaks have good performance characteristics for sea-kayaking. But again it depends on your particular kayaking circumstances as to which type of boat is most suitable. Because I now have more storage space, I can have a non-foldable boat, and so I decided to stick with a skin-on-frame construction because it allowed me to have a new sea-kayak that weighs only 14.5kg. The light weight means that I'm more likely to use it on a random basis becuse it's easier to lift and carry etc. @@itotallycare
Thanks, Citizen Wolf, it was great! ☺️

That's some commute!
Made much much easier by having the S2S. A NETWORK of safe segregated cycle infra would be absolutely transformational for society.
that's a lot of condensation.... Not much wind mind you.... best wishes tom
I've used it in an outer fly only configuration a couple of times, and the condensation is unholy. And this was with a footprint. One trip I stayed in the same spot 2 nights in a row to compare it outer fly only vs with inner fly. It was the same conditions both nights, and the difference in condensation on the outer fly was unreal to behold. With the inner tent up, there was essentially no condensation on the inside of the outer fly. But without the inner tent it was just like in the video above. And just to point out that in the video above, the door was half open the whole night, and still the condensation gathered. I've seen a video from a German guy who has used the Unna a lot, high in the mountains over there, and he's used it in an outer fly only configuration, and he didn't complain about condensation. Maybe it's just an Ireland thing.
Use it for calling dogs? 😂

Absolutely! Raven does all the background research and paperwork and then he sent out the flyers and organised everyone on the day. And afterwards he deals with all the PR and news outlets. He never rests. An example to us all.

The people that design cycle paths don't cycle
If the infrastructure wasn't so terribly designed, you wouldn't have this issue in the first place. Who thought that having a bicycle lane crossing a parking lot was a good idea?
Yes. This is a problem with most cycle-infra.
@@citizenwolf8720 It's so ridiculous. It's not only dangerous for cyclists, but also for all the other road users. It's crazy that no one has done anything about this yet.
I'd say if you weren't there she would have parked blocking the path.
One of my favorite videos on the internet! This is the cool stuff we can do with good bike infrastructure!
I would blame the road markings for this. There should be a clear white line at the edge of the cycle lane. Just back from Sweden and its super clear always. Not the driver's fault if it's not clear.
There's always something called situational awareness. I know, a lot of drivers don't have it, but still...
Kind of, but the driver has to turn around. It's just always easy to blame the driver, in this case I don't think it's particularly valid and I cycle a lot!@@laurensnieuwland4657
Just to add they also move very slowly indeed, giving cyclists a chance to adapt. It looks like quite a busy cycle lane. I dunno, it's just so easy to blame the car - the council is the main culprit here.
@@ab8jeh Yup. Bad road layout. Half-assed bicycle infrastructure is not only dangerous for cyclists, but also for other road users.
Yes, the driver who was in the car was moving slowly. Although she was completely unaware of an approaching cyclist at one point and started reversing in their direction. But there's also the ass-hat that left their car so the front half is blocking half of the cycle-lane. @@ab8jeh
That sounds awful
My concern would be where to leave the bike and trailer when youre on the water. Do you use an ebike to haul it?
Depends on what sort of trailer you have. You can get one that goes in the boat. Otherwise pick areas that you can stash the trailer out of sight. I have 2 types of trailer: one of them will break apart and can go in/on the boat; the other trailer is more sturdy and suitable for long distances. This bigger one also packs down flat, albeit too big for the boat, so it gets hidden out of sight. I've never had any issues. Just be sensible and be aware of the social environment. As for the bike, it's not any different than when you cycle anywhere - lock it securely. I don't use an e-bike. It's just a regular bike.
I love it, you're overtaking road cyclist😀

Exactly :)
Great route!
Very good. Most people don't show how to do this and it is most needed.
Different view of the Aviva! How do you find the F1 compared to other sea kayaks?
I'm still getting used to it. I haven't had it out in big waves or rough tidal race conditions yet. One of the main reasons I wanted to get one was for the light weight and it is indeed a lot lighter than other kayaks I've had. Even a few kilos makes a difference when you're tired after hours in the boat. So having a light boat I can carry myself unaided even when tired makes a big difference.
Out of curiosity, how do you know all the passenger counts of the buses and cars?
I count them. The bus counts are estimates by looking at the people on the bus and doing a rough head-count. The car counts are actual counts. Not too difficult with a max of 5, and usually just one. Overall just 1.1 people per car.
@@citizenwolf8720 damn that must take a good while! It's pretty evident that so many people cycle to the city via that route (and probably in greater numbers after segregation). And it's great to see lots going on and off that bridge to the Royal canal route. It'll be spectacular once the C2CC project is done. Not perfect, but a huge improvement.
I should have mentioned that I use a dictaphone and record throughout the whole session about various items that may need to be included in the tallies and for backup in case the cameras don't catch it.
@@niall_al3059 As to your guess that more are cycling in to the city after Covid - the numbers for each mode are almost exactly the same this year as when I last did a count here in 2019. And yes, it takes hours to tally all the numbers later on after the initial recording.
too much time on your hands to make these videos
00:38 you ran a red light man whats the story there?
How satisfied are you with the Nautiraid? Did you go for the PVC or the Hypalon option?
It's heavier than I thought it would be. If you take it in the sea then you do need to take care of it I find. But it performs fine. I have the PVC skin.
@@citizenwolf8720 Is there a way to have a look at your kayak in Dublin? I'm thinking of buying a Nautiraid as well next spring?
@@citizenwolf8720 what exactly do you mean with 'you do need to take care of it' please? Aluminium? or something else?
@@christianhabich8020 Hi sorry, I didn't see your reply until now. Do you still want to look at it?
@@Pedro-jv7zf Hi, the area I live has a variable coastline. Some rocky/stoney areas and some areas with a lot of sand. I found it was better NOT to drag the kayak across sand because sand is very abrasive. :(
Nice
Amazing weather! Must be great to see bits of the coast that few others can get to!
This video is now 3 years old with protected cycle lanes having been installed all over the place, including at fairview but still the junction with malahide rd is as bad as ever. In fact its worse with the addition of bollards along the edge of the bus lane. In order to overtake a bus a cyclist needs to move out 2 lanes.
Typical audi drivers🙄 dont know if its the audis that turn drivers into wankers or if its just all wankers drive audis, definitely the worst most hated drivers on uk roads 👍
I hope DCC add segregated space along Amiens st very soon.
