Woodturning - maple burl vase
Welcome to atelier del legno!
Today, I'll be creating a beautiful vase from a stunning piece of maple burl. Watch as this rough wood transforms into a work of art.
After preparing the wood, I start by securing the maple burl on the lathe. Maple burl is known for its unique and intricate grain patterns, making it perfect for this project.
Next, I shape the exterior of the vase. This process requires precision and patience, as I carefully turn away the excess wood to reveal the vase's form.
Now, I hollow out the interior. This step is crucial to achieve the right balance and weight for the vase. Slow and steady wins the race here.
After the basic shape is complete, I refine the vase's surface. Sanding smooths out any rough edges and highlights the natural beauty of the wood grain.

That blank sounds very dry Matt, not easy to get that clean cut without some practice for new turners. Good demo. Cheers, Jim
I have been using this cut for a number of years. Really leaves a great finish, even on punky wood.

Bin schon gespannt wie die mit Farbe aussieht. Die Form gefällt mir gut. Mir bricht auch ab und an mal ein Zapfen ab, schön zu sehen, dass das auch einem Profi passieren kann . Also am besten von deinen griechischen Vasen gefällt mir tatsächlich Hera .

Ist einfach. Bleibt genau dort haften wo die Anlagemilch ist. Überall wo Anlagemilch ist aber nicht sein sollte polierst du das nachher mit Autopolitur aus!

Good to see you working at the lathe Matthias. Since purchasing a set of Fisch wave cutter Forstner bits from Austria I always start with a 2" starter hole. I have also purchased the heavy duty extensions for them made by Framag. Make starting with the Proforme much smoother. Cheers and good health to you and Daniela. JIm
