Hello. In some contexts, varieties and registers are used almost synonymously. They can both pertain to the social context of the language, hence the term sociolect.

Yes. They do. For instance, one common similarity is they are both guided by the principles of semantics. This means that meaning plays an important role in both spoken and written language.
