Welcome to our farm! I’m the 3rd generation in our farm that started with my grandpa 70 years ago. I figured to just do a quick walk around our new to us Westward swather. This swather is a 2007 Westward which means that it’s technically not a Macdon however a few years later (2012) they were bought by Macdon and they had a lot of input in the design of the swather. Similar to how JD swathers a...

Hello I enjoyed watching your video alot. Where is your farm located at if I may ask you. I live on a farm by Reward Saskatchewan Canada. I am a Grain farmer. I farm with my youngest brother and my nephew. My youngest brother and my nephew are Grain farmers to but have a few Cattle. What all different tractors do you run on your farm. The difference tractors that we run on our farm is a 9682 Ford Holland 4 wheel drive and a 4630 2 wheel drive Johndeere tractor with a 158 Johndeere front end loader on it and a 8140 front wheel assist Massey Ferguson tractor with dual wheels on the back and a 7110 2 wheel drive magma Case international tractor with single tires on the back and a 135 horsepower front wheel assist Kubota tractor with single tires on the back and a front end loader on it with a grabber fork on the bucket. Those are all the different tractors that we run on our family farm
Love hearing from different people and farmers from around, not to mention those are some great tractors! We farm in northwestern Alberta, currently we’ve got a mahindra 8560 loader tractor, Lamborghini 1300 premium, 4800 Massey (tuned up to 265 HP), we have a 265 Massey however it needs some work, and an old co op E3 tractor that I’ve shown in other videos :)

I thought i was the only guy picking rocks like that, good to see a young guy out there doing some physical work.
One of many things that just seems to work for us 😊
You did a nice job of swathing !
Thanks!
Congratulations on finishing harvest!!
Thanks
Nice equipment!
The worst part of owning a shop is telling people they need to replace their car. When we can not find a new part that will work You combine 27 years of wear and tear on all the gear and all the bearings. How many hours do you have on this machine? That tells the story of what it will cost. Yes, a small breakdown can be fixed but if you hit that major one it's going to hurt. I understand you have a small operation I will be looking at a new used one with the least years and lower hrs on it.
Appreciate the comment, my dad’s combine which is the one that has issues is a 1995 with around 4500 hours on it roughly. It’s got a lot of life left in it and they make new parts for this combine front to back which is awesome. Every 10 or so years one of our combines typically needs to go in for a more major fix/preventative maintenance. Mine for example a few years ago got the cleaning mechanisms all replaced new and all the wear parts, aside from the rotor. Even though it was a big bill it’s Pennie’s compared to a new or even new to us machine that could/will eventually have issues. 😊 Hope this helps to show our side of it. Cheers 👍
@@3RDGENFARMS I grew up on a hay farm. I can imagine what a new combined cost I've heard it's around 800k but not sure. I run an Auto Repair shop here in Texas. So I understand not wanting to purchase another car. I'm glad you can still get parts that half the battle. Glad you have a great shop that takes care of its customers
Hey gotta ask you what your settings are on your gps for ez steer on the 2188? I just picked up a 2188 this year and i cannot make that thing drive straight with my ez steer and the 500 monitor in it. My old 1660 used to be within 1” but the 2188 just decides to go off and do zig zags down the field.
Is that with WAAS or RTK? In our tractor and sprayer with WAAS we’re within 1” and yet with our combine I find we’re closer to stayin within 3” and sometimes up to 6. We have our T2 box mounted sideways underneath the side console just by our feet. It’s close enough for us however I wonder if moving the T2 a bit further back and having it sitting flat might help? Or we could spend the money and get the subscription for RTK however it kind of sucks considering how much the units are to start with. I can’t think of the actual settings off the top of my head but hopefully this helps.
Was it a harrowing experience! 😁
😂
Nice work!
Thanks!
Ok. Yes. We used to have them. But, bought them. I thought yours were unusual. Home made. Well done
What do you call your crop lifters on your cutter bar please? Steve, in New Zealand
Hello Steve, we just call them "lifters" if that's what you're wondering. They're all homemade aswell incase you were wondering. Cheers.
"The mix of modern techniques and traditional farming is incredible. Keep the content coming!"
What is the yield in tonnes per acre or tonnes per hectare please?
I’m not super familiar with tonnes per hectare unfortunately but from what I calculated I think it comes out to being around 3 tonnes per hectare 👍
@@3RDGENFARMS Here in England We get about 4 tonnes to the hectare here on average but it is winter planted so longer growing season. Good luck with rest of your harvest.
Thanks, great to hear from someone in a different part of the world! Other farmers around get a higher yield but for us on our small farm these are good yields. I always love seeing posts about the yields over in England and other parts of Europe, always blows my mind! (Typically they are pretty high compared to our yields)
Just stumbled upon your channel, those old 2188’s are a hell of a good machine, easy to work on and fairly cheap to fix for the most part. Great video!
Thanks! And I most definitely agree.
@@3RDGENFARMS I JUST SUBED I LIKE FARMING CHANNELS AND RELAX WHILE WATCHING THANK FOR THE VIDEO THIS IS MY FIRST ONE
Great video man, really enjoyed it. Hope you guys can get the other combine rolling soon, and hopefully at a minimal cost
Thanks for the support 👍
Great vide. I wanted to learn about how the canola was picked up after swathing and you showed it perfectly. Thanks so much and good luck with the cropping.
Such an awesome video! I enjoyed every moment of it.
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you
You have created such a beautiful and peaceful lifestyle
It’s pretty awesome, although I can’t take much credit, the previous two generations have done a lot not to mention living within this beautiful land and nature!
Not only does it save time, but it's also environmentally friendly, these technologies are truly impressive!
Hello, nice to meet you
👋
Great to hear your crop so far was a good one, always nice to get a high yeild, definitely always a pleasant surprise
Good for you!
I love my 2188 too. Honestly i don't know what I'd upgrade too next. All the electronics in the new ones doesnt excite me. The 2188 is still easy to diagnose and fix. Hope your canola runs good 👍
I agree, in order to get 1 combine that does the same/more than both our combines would be a pretty big step up and cost a lot more money for the combine, header, repairs, fuel & they’re just not as simple. For us we just don’t need all those bells and whistles that can mess up. 🤷♂️
You've got nice weather for it!
You bet! Very lucky and fortunate to have this kind of weather during harvest.
Always plenty to do on a farm.
Wish you better luck!
Have you considered trading your rigid heads for flex headers?
We’ve thought about it, it’s a possibility however we like the simplicity (less moving parts) of the rigid headers. Also to maximize the capabilities of a flex head it’s best to roll the ground after planting however we don’t have a roller and for our size of farm it’s hard to justify a roller. 👍
It's always cool to see how items we use everyday are harvested. Watching the Canola just in front of the tractor is trippy, lol!
The C means Cummins engine the i means Isuzu engine. No jd’s
Thanks! I was told by the previous owner this was a 4 cylinder JD engine however after running the serial number you’re most definitely correct! Thanks for the clarification good sir!
MacDon goes woke??? Abandon a merit based business for a diversity based business at your peril InMy_never_HumbleOpinion. Sux to be them...
I enjoy your videos. Just wondering, is it a law in Canada, that ya have to wear flouresent green when operating equipment. ?
There are no laws regarding fluorescent in equipment. The reason I am is because these are the same coveralls I use for work (where I need high vis) and I typically like wearing coveralls on the farm as it keeps the grease and chaff off of my clothes a bit better. Thanks for the question 👍
Great video. How are the crops looking, better than last year?? The July heat definitely didn't help, but hopefully the May and June cooler weather and moisture was enough to protect some yeild
Our peas didn’t like the excessive moisture in June and early July. Then the heat took a good amount of yield off of the Canola while it was flowering. And finally the wheat I think did decently with the rain and the hot weather didn’t affect it too much. I think our peas will be below average this year but the rest of the crops weren’t hoping for average.
Anxious to see it rolling
Same here!
@@3RDGENFARMS how far out are you from Swathing?? I know Alberta is all over the place in regards to crop stages
We’re going to hopefully start tomorrow! Canola appears to be ready to go. Once we’re done there we may be starting to combine our peas depending on the weather.
@@3RDGENFARMS nice!!
Crops look great!
Thx for the video
Thx for the comment!
..You said you had to drive for a couple of hours. What town is the elevator in. Thanks..
Hey thanks for the comment, I’d rather not share that however, yes you are correct about the drive time from our farm. 👍
..That's ok. A lot of our wheat goes Cargill in Elm Creek MB. For me that is about 9 miles.. @@3RDGENFARMS
Enjoyed this video. I have done a lot of this kind of work. It's always a good feeling when you get it done. Stay safe and stay healthy my friend. By the way what is your age if you don't mind me asking?
I agree it’s a good feeling, I’m 24.
We farm at about 61 degr. latitude and we finished our harvesting by the end of September. Harvest was not the very best as beginning of season was very dry and during harvest we had some heavy rains. Your very big, flat fields is something we can just dream about. We get compensated for drying the oil seed under 9 %. If over 9 % you get your load returned. Keep the videos coming.
Great to hear how things are! Seems like a good system for canola. It’s unfortunate you had not the best harvest, however I hope for good luck for the winter and next season 👍
It's always a good feeling to be done with the harvest. Stay safe and stay healthy my friend. I am from Ohio
Good luck with your combines. Like your video"s.
Hey man. You have an interesting channel. Are you in northern Alberta?
Thanks! And in fact we are 👍

Hope it's an easy fix. I really enjoy your videos stay safe and stay healthy my friend. Nice to see the Canadian flag
Nice flat open field!
You most of went to UofS. I have a diploma from there 1989.
..What is "most of" ???
Very informative video. Now I know all about canola. Thank you for posting this stay safe and stay healthy my friend. Btw what is your name if I may ask
The name is Jon. And thanks! You know most things, I’m definitely not a genius and there are tons of more information. 👍
Interesting but now brain is on canola overload 🥴🥴🥴
Apologies, hopefully you enjoyed it 😂
