Player Piano: "In The Chapel In The Moonlight" (QRS Version)
Here is QRS roll 9067 played by Max Kortlander. The piano is quite out of tune here, as I haven't had it tuned since before COVID. I plan on getting it tuned this month.
I previously uploaded a different version of this song. Check it out here:

Pride Flag Theft

Obviously, this is very different from the content I usually post, but I was just shocked when I woke up to this. A person trespassed, broke, and stole a small Pride flag (Canadian version) off my car in the early morning hours on Monday. I have since replaced the flag, but this is pretty pathetic. If a small pride flag on a car, literally parked behind another car, is enough to send you into a...
Niagara Parks Power Station - Tunnel Elevator Ride

I am an industrial electrician apprentice by trade, so when I heard that the old Rankine Power Plant, which supplied 25Hz power all the way until 2006 (!!!), had reopened as a museum, I knew I had to go! Definitely worth a visit! In this video, the elevator ascends from the water outlet tunnel up to the power-house.

Finally, after several months, I am uploading these! This is the Lakeside Park Carousel on May 23, 2022, shot with my DSLR (Canon EOS Rebel T8i). I tried to capture the organ's sound from a bit of a distance in this video. The songs are "Ta-Ra-Ra Boom-De-Ay" and "The Sidewalks Of New York" from Tom Meijer's roll 14509 ("Good Old USA Carousel Music #1").

This is a re-upload of the 2016 QRS Christmas roll played by Sierzchula, Berkmer & Jones. The songs are "Last Christmas", and "All I Want For Christmas Is You" using my new setup. Unfortunately, I was unable to get any new Christmas rolls this year, so all I have is stuff I've already posted. Thanks for watching/listening and have a happy holiday season!

This is a re-upload of the 2015 QRS Christmas illustrated collector's roll (XMAS-2015) using my DSLR and my new Rode VideoMicro microphone (mounted on the camera). I reverted back to 1080p 60FPS for this video, and the result was much better than the 60FPS videos shot on my phones (including my Galaxy S20 ). The mic sounds pretty good, and makes it sound more like what I'm actually hearing in t...

This video features QRS Celebrity Roll CEL-111 played by Liberace. It is a combination of Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Prelude In C Sharp Minor", and Nino Rota's "Godfather" theme. I tried a new setup for this video using my Canon DSLR and a tripod. This allows me to show the roll and the keys. I would like to get an external microphone that can mount to the camera's hot shoe in the future to improve...

Pause the video at 3:52 to see the chain I’m talking about in this comment. This happened when I was probably seven years old, no more than eight, I’m 74 now. A neighbor down the street had a player piano. I wasn’t allowed to handle the piano rolls, but the mom of the house would put them in for me and then let me pump them through. I understood to switch it to reroll at the end of the song. One time when I went to the house, the mom told me that the player wasn’t working. I was able to see into the piano through the opening that the piano roll holders were behind. With the music rack pulled out, I could see that the left chain of the two visible at 3:52 was hanging from the upper gear. I was able to reach my hand in through the small opening and get the chain attached back onto the larger gear at the bottom. I told the mom that I had fixed the piano, but she just said “mmm hmm” and went on doing her chores. I left shortly after that and forgot about the incident. A few days later, they had a party for all of the neighborhood kids and friends of those kids who lived in other parts of the small town. One of the older guys went over to the piano and started to put a roll on it. The daughter of the house told the guy that the piano wasn’t working, but he ignored her and started to pump the pedals. I will never forget the shocked look on the daughter‘s face when it started playing. But I never admitted to anyone that I was the one who had fixed it and by then I’m sure the mom had completely forgotten about it. I hadn’t thought about this in many years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. John McClain NRTBW

This reminds me of the scifi short story called "exhalation" about a society of air-powered robots who live on a planet that has a giant reservoir of air inside it and they recharge their lungs at these air pumping stations so that all the pneumatic mechanisms in their bodies can keep working. I always had trouble visualizing what the mechanisms would have looked like, but now i imagine they would be somewhat similar to this piano. It almost seems like a living creature compared to a computer filled with unmoving electronic components 😮

My grandparents bought a Baldwin brand new in 1928. And it cost a little over $300. They bought it on an installment plan at around $15 a month. A year later Baldwin lost one of the payments that they made and they didn't have proof because it was Cash mailed in and they had to repay for the same month twice. After that they were adamant on saving every receipt for everything they paid for and I have all those receipts to this day from over a hundred years ago.

Does anyone happen to know if some of these types of player pianos were ever refitted later on to also run on electricity, rather than manually pumping the foot pedals? Back when I was a little kid in the '70s, our house had one, and I remember sitting on the bench, pumping the pedals to listen to the songs, but I also have vague memories of it being able to be set up to run on its own, without having to have someone physically operating the pedals. Am I correct, or is my memory just playing tricks on me?
