Dealing with pinched optics on WO RedCat/SpaceCat
My lovely SpaceCat 61 WIFD suffered from funny stars - here is a short account of all the things I tried and that may work for you! Ultimately it had to go back to William Optics for factory readjustment, so this is also my experience with that side of the process. Hope it's interesting!

This is how I do close-ups of the solar limb with my 40mm Lunt and ZWO ASI174mm - including a Powermate/Barlow, and using IMPPG for processing!
What do I need for planetary imaging?
Переглядів 7 тис.7 місяців тому
A run through my planetary imaging equipment necessities and nice-to-haves! Together with the following two videos on setting up, and imaging and processing, these pretty much show my entire process beginning to end. If you're hoping to get started with planetary imaging, these may provide some starting points and inspiration. Good luck!
Simple planetary imaging start - capture and processing basics
Переглядів 5 тис.8 місяців тому
Planetary imaging from coastal England sometimes seems like a fool's errand, but I am in love with it, and wanted to share my process! As always, this is just what works for me, but hopefully gives someone a starting point. After an unbelievably poor weather all throughout autumn and winter, I'm hoping to get some opportunities to record some better captures!
Installing a ZWO EAF to a RedCat/SpaceCat 61 WIFD
Переглядів 4 тис.9 місяців тому
A short video on how I installed ZWO's EAF to my SpaceCat 61 with the new internal focuser design. Not the most straightforward thing for me, so there's a "don't do what I did" included! Thankfully it all works now. You can find the diagrams and installation instructions I show on screen here in the manual: cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0675/5752/3673/files/Manual-Redcat-61-WIFD.pdf?v=1709691518
Highlights of European Astrofest in London 2024
Переглядів 89510 місяців тому
A short video about a day out in London for the 2024 European Astrofest. It's a big conference with talks and all sorts of vendors and exhibitors, and this year they hosted their inaugural imaging competition sponsored by Celestron. My image of the solar system planets was shortlisted and exhibited at the hall, unfortunately I didn't win, but it was really nice to see among some great astrophot...
Setting up for planetary imaging - Camera, ADC, Barlow
Переглядів 16 тис.Рік тому
Setting up my SCT for planetary and lunar imaging, including the ADC and Barlow. For all who have been confused about what goes where, does it need backfocus, why they can't find it, how does guiding work, how does the ADC word etc - here is my whole quick setup process. I tried my best to show everything as clearly as I could, sometimes not as easy when recording in the dark and half the stuff...
Solar imaging with a small Lunt H-alpha telescope - capture and processing

How I image and process the whole solar disc with a 40mm Lunt For anyone who loves their new hydrogen alpha solar telescope and are into solar disc imaging like me, I hope this can inspire some ideas about creating your own workflow or get someone started! In this video I run through setup, capture, and processing to get an inverted Sun image, which I personally like. The photo I’ve got in this...
Setting up a Lunt 40mm Hydrogen Alpha solar telescope
Переглядів 11 тис.Рік тому
Small 40mm Lunt from box to mount I encountered a few small snags setting up my new dedicated solar telescope, and wanted to share with you all how I got around them. I've recently moved on from a Coronado PST to a 40mm Lunt (ouch, wallet), because the PST wasn't playing ball when it came to focusing, and I'm looking to get the whole solar disc in frame. The Lunt had a few small things to resol...
Celestron CPC 800 vs 925 - size and portability
Переглядів 20 тис.Рік тому
If you’re like me, and you’ve been trying to decide whether the CPC 8” or 9.25” are portable enough for you before you commit, I’ve decided to make video about how they compare in size and what it’s like to manoeuvre them. I’m pretty average size and fitness, so hopefully this will be helpful for those who are wondering whether they can lift them up and set the down easily! The CPC series is ab...

LARGE TELESCOPE with tiny mini powerful camera
I've followed the tutorials and messed up my scope, the silver part from ZWO got stuck... Also did you attache the bracket to the holes where in manual it says "don't touch"? And did you not add the large tension screw in the end? I think the focuser is moving in my case without that screw, as it makes sound when I shake it without it attached.
I did attach the bracket to the “do not touch” holes but I said it was in error, and the next time I did it, I kept them untouched - you don’t need them. I returned the large screw back yes - just be careful not to overtighten. I will take a photo of the underside of my scope where the EAF is for you and put it on my Instagram, @cellistontheroof. It should be there for the next 24 hours!
I cannot get mine to find the focus point. I’ve reduced the steps. Increased the steps. Super frustrating
Is that after it’s found the stars and it can’t do fine focus, or can it not find anything at all?
After I find the stars. In fact, I get them nice and pinpoint and then try to run the autofocus and it just cannot seem to focus. It’s almost like the stars are too small for it to pick them up.
I had a funny moment like that when it didn’t want to focus and resolved it by expanding my limits. In ASIAIR > EAF > Step Settings > limit, set it to something much larger, then do a full restart. Hope this works!
@@CellistOnTheRoofgood tip! I started making the steps smaller. What are yours set at?
My step size has never changed, it’s been 40 from the beginning. Fine is 10, coarse is 30. The current position is around 9000 and the limit has been upped to 25000, then it worked fine! I have exactly 55mm at the back. Really hope that helps.
The 11 has to me mammoth. Do you notice a visible difference between the 8 vs the 9.25.
I do in my images! It’s not massive but it’s visible to me. I’ll take any bit of extra detail I can 😊
@CellistOnTheRoof how about thru they eyepiece. Do you ever do any eyepiece observation, and is it noticeable? I would guess if the images show a difference, the eyepiece would also.
In my opinion it does but more subtly than in photos when all is stacked and processed!
@CellistOnTheRoof my 10 inch meade is clearly more than my c8 celestron. But my 10 inch is on an eq mount and needs 3 11lbs weights to balance. It's several trips in and out and assembly. I was considering the cpc 9.25 because of the 2 piece design, and it looks so cool. I may need to suck it up and just get the 10 out there.
Have you tried AstroSurface? From what I've seen it's like all in one for planetary.
I haven’t tried it, just because these already do everything I need!
If I add EAF will I be able to easily mount the 🐈⬛ on AM5? I hope it won’t collide.
I use mine on the AM5. It won’t go all the way up the dovetail but there’s still plenty of space to move around.
@@CellistOnTheRoof Thanks. FLO recommended pushing the scope forward in the "ring" that holds the scope, so the EAF is further away. As for the tension screw, how hard do you screw it in? I did screw it in hardly a few times thinking it might make focus more stable lol, but now I see in the manual it could damage the focuser. 🙈🤣 I hope I didn't mess up anything. That was without EAF though, which I will receive today, already a bit anxious thinking about attaching it. Also when installing EAF I was told I should set focus to maximum? (lens moving forward 100%) Thanks for answering and great channel, going to sub and watch your vids.
It’s hard to explain the whole “tighten but don’t overtighten” thing with the tension screw, I tightened it so it made contact and nipped the thread. I think it needs to be able to turn in both directions! My focus was around the zero mark but it moves around as you turn to get screws in. Good luck!
You did a great job on this video. I don't think the WO instructions were nearly as clear as what you presented. Thank you.
Thanks, that’s really nice to hear!
Lifting form a low or medium hight, strong, table would help. Watch your back. Use a trolly, with soft air filled tyres, for moving?
Can’t use any of those unfortunately, as there’s no space, lots of little steps, and narrow doorways to get out! That’s why I made the video to show what it’s like when it needs to be lifted off the ground.
Just bought the camera and I used it for the first time. It was ALL blurry. Through the eyepiece, it was tack sharp, maybe in need of some slight collimation. but through the camera even the moon was blurry.
WELDONE MATE! BLESSINGS FROM NEWCASTLE IN AUSTRALIA, A. SORAYA 🔮🍸💖🔭🌎🍹
I like the way you present. Not dictatorial.
This is super helpful, thank you! I’m debating between the CPC edge 800 and 925. It would be very much appreciated to see more comparisons between the 800 and 925. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the info,. It was very helpful. I was thinking about trying planetary photography with my SCT and was curious on how to setup and what equipment is needed.
Excellent videos, very clear with simple and very useful explanations, well done! thank you so much
Thanks, really glad it was helpful 😊
Great video, thanks!
would it be possible to somehow post the adjustment document you show in the video? thx - got the same issue on a new GT81
I’ll put it up as a post for you now, it should be under the “community” tab.
@@CellistOnTheRoof thanks much appreciated! - got a problwm with my new WO GT81 which I think is pinched optics!
@@CellistOnTheRoof many thx
@@CellistOnTheRoof I also reached out to WO, Tim responded: "Thank you for reaching out. The spikes you are seeing on bright stars are not due to pinched optics. This effect is actually caused by the collimation screws on the lens cell, which are designed to help with precise optical alignment." - I am unimpressed, none of the other refractors I own have this issue ...
I keep coming back to this great video. I'd love to know more on how your different filters improved your results.
Thanks for the kind words. It’s been an incredibly cloudy month so hopefully there will be opportunities to do more imaging later.
Well done and very much appreciated! 🔭
Thanks for your video, easy to follow. Ive just had first light with my C8 and am experiencing mega soup, i was wondering if you use the new dew rings for your C9.25? im think mine has turned mega soup into stew
Hi, yes I got the dew heater ring for the 9.25 as well! It keeps the dew off successfully but if the night isn’t good, it’s just not good.
Hello love your content. I actually just purchased a CPC Deluxe HD 1100 because of your videos lol
Oh wow, you went right for the big one - you’ll absolutely love it, best of luck with your new scope!
I'm starting to use the camera use this weekend and I've been wondering if my setup is correct. Thanks for the video.
Hope it helps! It’s a great camera, good luck with your imaging.
I miss your videos, hope your doing well and will be back soon.
Thanks for the kind words, we’ve had a period of anticyclone in the UK which made the whole month completely overcast, and I’ve been sick as a dog on top of that - not much astronomy happening lately! Hopefully it will turn around soon.
@@CellistOnTheRoof Hope you feel better soon. Get well and we'll both for some clear skies.
Thank you for this!!!!! Installing on a Red Cat 51Gen 3 right now. This video is perfect!!!
Really glad it was helpful! 😊
You're not a nobody! Thank you!
Lol. The ending. 😂 I still have to attach one of these to my WO Zenithstar 61 but I haven't yet plucked up the courage. I'd found two good videos showing how to do it, now I've found a third. 👍 Might have a go at the weekend.
Zenithstar should be even easier, all the instructions and other videos I’ve seen are much closer to it visually than the new WIFD cats! Good luck 😊
To be honest, just listening to you is so relaxing and motivating to get back into astrophotography. I haven't inaged anything since 2016. Your video is helping me big time. How is the astromania filter set? Thanks ❤
Thank you! Yes now’s the time, do it! The Astromania set is surprisingly decent for the money. I tried the methane filter on planets once, it’s on my Instagram page, but after that I was travelling and then got epically sick. Hope it clears up soon so I can put it to more use.
@ Sorry to hear about her sickness. The filters sounds like a good deal so I am going to buy the set. Weather wise clouds in the UK needs to move along now 😂 There December & Jan should be a good time for planetary imaging.
Glad you mentioned that you don't have to worry about backfocus for planetary imaging. I was slightly worried about backfocus as I will be using the ASI662mc with my Skymax180pro, probably with a x2 barlow, ASIAir on an EQ mount. Well, as soon as these cloudy skies in the UK clear and I'm not working! 😂
Great kit! If you can, do consider ditching the Asiair for a laptop or PC - they’re wonderful for deep sky but just don’t have the bandwidth for planetary and won’t get you the best out of that brilliant gear. Good luck!
@@CellistOnTheRoof Interesting about the ASIAir. I'll try both methods if I ever get a chance to compare. I went with the ASIAir Plus for ease of set up, alignment and use etc. It's been cloudy here for over a week now and the next 7 days aren't looking any better. Frustrating! Hope you have better luck on the south coast.
Just got this camera delivered today. Will be a new journey for astrophotgraphy. Thanks for the video. Helps a bit and I know I have a TON to learn now.
Continue your channel
I know she is a busy lady. She has gone several months previously with out posting. I'm sure she'll be back.
7 months later and they still haven't provided better instructions, thanks for this! One quick question that might be obvious, but I am over cautious, did you fully remove the "orange" tension knob in order to out the EAF plate down? I am assuming so, but at the same time, I just want to be sure before I do it. Thanks!
Hi, yes completely removed but then used as a mounting point for the EAF, then made sure not to overtighten!
@@CellistOnTheRoof Thanks very much! Sadly, I ran into a rather unexpected issue. I went to loosen the internal grub screws for the temp knob and one of the internal grubs is completely stripped before I even started, so the temp knob will not come off. I am in contact with Agena Astro to see what they can do since it's only been a couple days since I received the RedCat.
Brilliant! I think you've helped a lot of people! (Including me!)
I hope so! Thanks ☺️
Wow, nice video. I would never be able to buy one of those. But that lens looks OMG level.
I’ve been thinking about getting into astronomy/astrophotography and purchased a WO Zenith Star 61 and just bouncing around UA-cam. Interesting video, thanks.
Great vid! Thank you!
Thanks!
Thanks very much! Really hope the videos can be helpful 🥰
👍👍👍👍
You are sooooo beautyful ❤
That's crazy the issues you had out of the box. I would of requested a new one.
Hi, What kind of laptop specs do you think works well with a h-alpha imaging setup similar to yours? Thanks.
Hi, mine’s a Dell Inspiron, I think the main things you want are a a fast chip, lots of storage, and for it to be a PC rather than Mac. Gaming laptops usually do well!
@@CellistOnTheRoof Do you think 8GB of RAM is adequate? Thanks again. 🙂
I’d say it would be okay but on the lower side, mine is 16!
a zip-tie with a long tail works good too
So the secret is to do deep squats to build core and leg muscles. And a love of astronomy would be a great motivator.
Ecellent. Thank you!
They are an excellent company, thanks for sharing your story. Clear skies
❤ thanx you rally know what you doing Keep it up ❤
Thank you so much. I recently received a Lunt 60t as a gift. Your video will really help, though I have the zwo120mm cam with a smaller sensor. I also have the 533mc pro.
What an amazing gift! You’ll love it. Glad the videos were helpful!
