Hey there! As I mention in the video, it's been a mad few weeks, but I'm excited to share this new video with you as a pretty big The Umbrella Academy fan! I watched while I dealt with my most recent bout of the Rona :'). Sadly I wasn't wild about the ending of the show, but I am tempted to go back and rewatch S1 and S2, as I think they were some pretty great TV. And I may start watching The Bo...

CORRECTION: In D1, JANE is actually the character who steals the wand at the coronation, not Mal! Mal had been manipulating Jane over the course of the movie to get her to help! I don't mind skipping this movie. I'm still struggling with how this fits in the first three since they made it plainly clear that it's canon to the Disney films, with or without sequels, and not another stupid HSM like Zombies is doing.

    What an amazing analysis of the Descendants franchise, especially for Rise of red! One of my main quarrels with D4 was, why didn't they mention the other younger VKs (like Dizzy, Celia) and or had a small cameo to tie them with this movie? Missed opportunity of showing more continuity between the 3rd and the 4th film.

    No flame, just Jay never had any sexism against Lonny/Lonnie (Mulan's daughter) being good at swordfighting. Jay had no opinions other than "that's awesome"! It was Chad who told Jay that it was specified in the rule book that the team should consist of a Captain and 7/8 boys/men (I forgot) and "we don't break the rules here in Auradon". At the end of the movie Jay came up with an idea to circumvent the rule : Lonny/Lonnie is "Captain" + the other guys - so he don't break the rules cuz the rules book just said "Captain", he managed to get Lonnie in AND keep up to "Auradon standards" P.S Jay comes from the Isle where everyone of every age fights for survival and dominance, makes no sense that he would have notions of girls = weak. P.P.S While it wasn't shown I'm sure Evie and Mal can fight, you can't tell me Mal and Uma never had fistfights 😅

    The themes are about drugs the cupcakes are euphemism for drugs and when euliana tried too many she became a had a bad trip (turning into an flaminco faced octupus human) and the reason the queen of hearts was still so insane because she never came back from the trip when they spiked the cupcake as a prank (the cursed cupcake that turned her into an ogre). This is just my opinion why not.

    The fact is, Red isn't a vk. Yes she's the child of a villain in a disney movie, but her mum hasn't been rounded up with everyone else and put on an island and forcibly been impovrished which was the huge ass thing in the first three movies. She has lived a life of royalty and privilege. That really differenciates her from the rest of the children of villains

    another huge plot hole is that Ulianna was never actually capable of doing the prank in the first place. If Red and Chloe hadn't been there, Ulianna would have still been frozen by the book and be caught by Merlin. So technically speaking, they never changed anything, so why does the queen of hearts change at all?

    • @ebandsnowy
      @ebandsnowy 3 місяці тому

      bc ella did the prank, (at least that’s a very popular theory). it says the book can’t be opened by the wrong hands. Ella isnt a villain, so she would be the right hands. Ella did the prank and that’s why Queen of hearts calls her two-faced and too fake. Since Chloe and Red hid the book, Ella wasn’t able to find it.

    Your critiques on RoR are exactly what I've been thinking. I was hoping the movie would still be good despite having a brand new creative team that never worked on anything Descendants related prior to this, but I feel pretty disappointed in the weak writing and all the potential they had with characters like Red and Chloe and the Wonderland setting.

    Can we talk about how this franchise barely gives any screen time to the male characters. I know Disney Channel focuses on mostly female leads, but it’s very noticeable in the descendants movies. The Guys are an afterthought & are there to fill a quota.

    I get merchandise & costumes for children but the colorful hair & outfits looks super tacky & cartoony to me. Mal is the worst character in this franchise. She is so frustrating in each film. Lying about permanently closing the barrier was the dumbest decision. She being the new queen could’ve literally just made the barrier disappear 🫠 Also can we talk about how Audrey never got reprimanded for her actions? She literally caused so much harm to the citizens of Aurodon. I get she was hurt but I hate how she got away with bad behavior while Hades got escorted by the guards by literally saving her life. 🙄🙄 This franchise irks me so much lol.

    I think they should have made it a series so they could spread everything out. We can see character developments, storylines that contradict the first 3 movies and important things that kept getting thrown in our face every scene but they completing skipped over like it wasnt repeated every 5minutes *Castlecoming*

  • @artlly_
    @artlly_ 3 місяці тому

    Yes, yes, and yes!! I couldn’t agree more! Some critiques I have for the movie have to do with the costuming, besides the poorly down and inconsistent wigs the outfits are painfully bright and monochromatic. In the past VK’s would have 2 or 3 colors in their outfits that where more dark or desaturated (Mal was purple and green, Evie was black and blue, Carlos was black, white, and red, etc.) Red’s color scheme was aggressively red when it should have been red, black, and yellow like the animated Queen of Hearts was. Speaking of, whenever they showed the iconic villains they usually looked similar in their design to their animated counterparts (except for Hades for some reason), something they didn’t follow through with on the Queen of Hearts. Her first outfit should have been similar to her animated one, then when she changes it later they could take more creative liberties with it. Also, where was Red’s dad? The Queen of Hearts is one of the few Disney Villains with a canonical husband and he wasn’t even mentioned! Another thing I think they should have done differently is the bully group. Uliana and Morgie don’t make any sense and just confuse the audience. Maleficent and Hades should have been the lead villains (Maleficent may have been insecure but that can manifest in a variety of ways including bullying and she already has cursed entire realms) with Hook, Anastasia, and Drizella as their followers. Having Anastasia and Drizella there would have helped tie in the Cinderella connections and having Maleficent and Hades take on a bigger role would have made more sense for their characters. They were essentially background actors in the movie! Oh and Morgie’s character is so confusing especially for the general audience who wouldn’t know who Morgana Le Fey is! Heck I didn’t even know when I first watched it because he introduced himself as “Son of Morgana, Serpentine” but without looking up the lyrics you’d think his mother’s name was Morgana Serpentine! If they wanted a child of the enemy of Merlin they should have gone with Mad Madame Mim! Morgana only appears in Sofia the First! And they already had a villain named Morgana who is the little sister of Ursula! I don’t get why they created Uliana, she should have been either Ursula or Morgana or not there at all! I also think having Uma go into the past with them would have helped especially since they so heavily marketed Uma’s return in this movie. Having her go to the past with them would have helped round out the main group and give them a more experienced and grounded character to help guide the new gen of characters. Anyways, I think those are the main issues I have with the movie. Thanks for making this video!

    I didn't even think about the themes, but you're so right. They're very poorly handled. In general the movie lacks focus on what it wants to be about. The fact that this castle festival wasn't in the movie is wild. If I were the change the plot, this is what I would do: Add 30 more minutes to the movie first. After Red and Chloe get the book, they look into the looking glass to make sure everything is better, but its not. So they go to the festival, thinking Uliana must be doing a different prank, but then find out that it was Elle the whole time who pranks Brigette. Elle could maybe see Brigette and Charming together, misunderstanding that there is something going on between them. Red and Chloe stop her before the worst can happen and finally prevent the bad future. This 1. would have prevented the plot hole of Uliana and gang being frozen by the book so how would they have gotten the book originally. 2. Would have completed Elle's chekhow gun's gray morality. 3. Would have tied together the theme of there is good and bad in everyone, good people can become bad, bad people can become good. 4. It would force Chloe to reevaluate everything she knew and give her an interesting set up for the next movie that is less shallow than "I guess sometimes good people can steal" 5. Red and Chloe would have gotten that deep talk with their mothers that not only would have strengthen the relationship dynamics but also their own character arcs Edit: Elle being the one who does the prank would also explain why Brigette is so fixated on making Elle suffer specifically. Like yeah, Elle is her friend and there it's alluded to that Elle didn't help when the prank happened, but thats such a throw away line and was never elaborated on that it just feels half baked. If Uliana was the one to do the prank it would have felt more appropiate for Brigette to focus more on Uma as Uliana's niece. Like the whole dynamic between Elle and Brigette is just so shallow that Elle being the one to do the prank would have helped a lot to give it some depth. I also though about how Elle could have done the prank; By involving the young fairy godmother. Her inability to use the wand correctly was established twice but never played any part in the plot, which is shame cause it's such an obvious set up for some kind of pay off. So Elle could have asked fairy godmother to use her wand to idk give Brigette a pretty dress or something, encouraging fairy godmother that she can do it while fully expecting the magic to backfire and it does, by turning Brigette into a 'monster'. Involving fairy godmother would have also made it more interesting in retrospective how she reacted to Uma's plan to invite Brigette's daughter

    the time line is SO confusing to me. the villain kids are supposed to have this general trauma thing where the royals or whatever they’re called are supposed to have been segregating or just like unfair to them for a long time. but really it’s been less than a generation. because mals parents where at the same school as royals. but then got sent to the isle at some point where mal was born and grew up until she was like 16 or something??? and now it’s being framed as undoing a long wrong and unfairness towards the villains but it hasn’t been that long. plus that also means that belle and the beast haven’t been the “main” queen and king for that long, and it just makes the time line SO messy. also why were the villains called “VKs” when maleficent WAS maleficent. that’s not the son of hades, that IS hades. the timeline just makes ZERO sense to me

    • @phillinsogood
      @phillinsogood 3 місяці тому

      Very messy. This is a good point they made it seem like it had been over a century when it was actually like almost 2 decades. Also why were the villians banished in the first place I get the difference between hero’s and villains but they never explained what bad thing they did to make Belle & The Beast get rid of them for good

      To be fair, with the og trilogy info only, the focus was moreso on the effect the Isle has had on the CHILDREN, not the villains themselves. Spending 16+ years of your life growing up trapped on an Isle where you're given scraps and trash from a mainland because your parent did some villainous act while you were only unfortunate enough to be born to them is what they try to emphasize. It's an injustice because the children are innocent and yet the heros are making them grow up for nearly 20 years on an island prison as if they themselves wrecked havoc on them all. It makes sense honestly, they never really tried to say it was an injustice for the villains themselves to be on an island for 20 years.

I try to pretend the real story and the descendants version are two separate things, bc for example, how did Alladin and jasmine meet normally if they went to highschool together? And where was jafar? If fairy god mother was th e same age as Cinderella, and was bad at spells at the time of the ball that her and charming met at, then how does that follow the original story line of Cinderella? There’s so many plot holes in descendants that I choose to ignore because it’s a fun kids movie with a cool concept

      They did that because 1) these aren't actually related to the disney movies, just loosely inspired by them, and 2) a character was Morgan Le Fay's kid, so they likely didn't want the 2 names to be confused for each other.

      They dont' want to show Ursula as being a villain though. LIterally two weeks before this movie came out, Disney released a cartoon called Ariel where Ursula is just her sassy aunt. That is the version of her Disney wants kids to know, not the one from the animated movie.

      @@artlly_ I dont really pay attention to how well put together things are on the set but the story they are trying to convey. One part of the movie I like is the fact they are introducing new characters and their struggles and seeing them grow and change. Red and Chloe for example, Red grew up with a manipulative, controlling mother so she grew up breaking the rules to get a little bit of freedom, while chloe was born as a princess and thinks goodness over evil. One thing that I enjoyed about those two is just how much they learned from each other and used that to change the way they think and how they do things. I just cant wait to see where their story is heading next. And yes I understand the story did kinda go off hill but there is still lot of potential, they still need to go back in time to fix their mistakes maybe we will meet wonderland characters. I think this movie is a little more realistic when it comes to mother daughter relationships. Bridget realized that being nice got her nowhere so in order to be respected and not underestimated, she had to be feared, which is something she wanted her own daughter to know early on (mothers raising daughters based on their own mistakes and fears). Red rebelled against her mother because she did not want to be like her, just something teen daughters do, and she had moments like sentencing Ella because she was taught not to be underestimated. I think all the movies follow the theme that good and bad isn’t absolute, and that despite trying to be different than her mother, Red displayed both sides of her anyway. Other than the theme aspect, I think the movie was very messy and that they’re definitely gonna clear everything up in the 5th movie- I bet they didn’t think those of us that watched in 2015 and are grown now were still gonna tune in 😂

    • @dancingsun2
      @dancingsun2 3 місяці тому

      Nah they were definitely hoping older fans would tune it. Otherwise it'd be less likely they'd make another Descendants movie, muchless already talk about 5th one before RoR premiered, if they were hoping fans of the og trilogy wouldn't show up. They gave RoR a higher budget after all and premiered it on Disney Plus instead of Disney Channel, og fans are half of their targeted audience

    I was really hoping it was going to be the "good guys" that bullied her and that she was going to have beef with Cinderella because she didn't stop it from happening/stand up for her but I kind of lost that hope as soon as they introduced the over the top villain squad. I am also so confused about why it's Ursula's sister? Like no one else gets that treatment. Why couldn't it just be Ursula?

    • @courtneycallen

      I actually think it WAS Cinderella who pranked Bridget, but and Red and Chloe think it’s the VK’s who pull the prank and end up inadvertently stopping Cinderella from doing the prank by thwarting the VK’s from pulling the Cinderella actually did. I can explain my theory if you’re interested, but I think it’s probably correct because they definitely set up this movie for a sequel.
