Football Week 1 Officials Education Video
Marc, thank you and good luck this post season to all TFOA officials!!! Also I feel the trend regarding forward progress near or out of bounds is always to find a way to keep the clock moving. IMO we need to just make sure we know the rule and ensure we support and encourage wing officials to stay within the rules. We are talking about a few secs within a game and we owe the kids that. Let’s stop trying to find ways to make the game end quicker.
Thank you Patrick, great statement you made.
Another great job, Marc. Thank you for all your hard work!
Thank you
Was that third kickoff play not a pop up kick?
Marc, can you tell me what platform you are using to make you clips and edit them with.
I use a program called Animotica to create my videos and then upload them to UA-cam.
Appreciate all the work you put in!
Thank you
Marc, could we have had kci on the onside kick?
If the ball had not touched the ground first, then yes. However, in this case the ball had touched the ground and went further than 10 yards downfield. This meets the requirements for K team to legal recover the ball.
@@bryonweatherford1772 Thanks for the reply and correct.
We used to have the BJ walk back and check prior to signaling they were ready but stopped that last year.
Good procedure for preventive officiating. Just my thoughts.
Great video!!!! Thank you, Marc
Thank you
Another greeat job, Marc. Thank you for all the hard work you do. It is appreciated by those of us on the field.
Thank you very much. I appreciate it helps other officials.
The play at 10:51 of the video - the yardage is correct, but the previous spot was on the right hash, not the middle of the field.
Great Video! As a wing guy, looking at it from the LJ point of view. I'm seeing simultaneous catch unless the BJ sees something else, that is a TD.
I had a similar play to the last play this year, only in my case I had simultaneous possession in the end zone. I ruled it as a touchdown for A. The team B coach was upset and while he was arguing the call he said both players had the ball. I said, "Exactly coach, and simultaneous possession goes to the offense". However, in the video here it's not clear that A ever possessed the ball so it's reasonable to give B the ball at the 20.
Great video, Marc. Hard play to officiate even slowing it. I tried to put myself in the LJ spot and it appears they both are fighting and D player ends up with. Very hard play and great job by the guys on the field.
great clips
Short wing should drop his beanbag to mark the spot and clean up mix colors.
on the catch play, it appears to be a simultaneous catch which would go to R but it's difficult to tell from film
Looks like a simultaneous catch in the end zone which would be awarded to A. TD
These are Great clips! Thank you for Sharing!!
You made the statement that the defender took the ball away from the WR. If that's true, doesn't the WR have to have the ball for it to be taken away? TD?
the last play the defender is not playing the ball not giving the rec a chance to catch therefore should have been a dpi
In HS rules, player B does not have to make a play on the ball. As long as he does not interfere with the eligible opponents opportunity to move toward the catch. Which I don't believe player B's movement would meet that criteria.
At 9:51, the yellow line appears to be drawn through the waist of the right tackle but should be drawn through the waist of the third receiver in (the one who catches the pass) as he is the closet player on the line. The first and second receivers appear to not break the plane through his waist and should be considered backs. Even if either of these receivers are in no man's land, nothing I'm aware of in the rule book says a player in no man's land covers a receiver inside him on the line, so the only foul would be illegal formation. Otherwise, I’ve got nothing.
1:35, offsides on K by looks to be 2 players,, 7:46 & 9:06, throw that flag high,,
YES
Good example of the yard markers...Rule 1-2-2: 'Yard-line markers, constructed of soft, pliable materials, if placed on the ground, should be no closer than 5 yards to the sideline"
Thanks.
Mechanics sequence for a dead ball foul, encroachment, false start, is Whistle first (shut down the play), flag, time out signal (kill the clock), then signal to the referee the signal.
We don't do preliminary signals in high school ball... use your radio to send the info or go to R
@@kentyndall6603 Not everyone uses radios.
Great Vid! Thanks, Marc
Thanks
On Holding the spot as a sideline official I often drop a bean bag, especially if I have players moving out of bounds into the opposing team box after a foul. I may be going in to escort a player out of that mess.
Thanks Marc. With the hold the spot situation; Let’s make good use of our radios. Hold the end of the run, and report to the ref the foul.
Thank you.
I'm with another association in a different state. Just want to say good work on these video's, this one just seems to hit home a little more this week.
Thank you for the feedback.
@9:17 For that block above the shoulders, could you call a 5 yard facemask on offense?
illegal use of hands.....10 yards
I look forward to each video!
Thanks, glad the videos are helpful.
What’s your email Marc? I would love to send you a clip from our game in Arkansas

md22phillips@gmail.com,. Thanks
backward pass? don't you mean a lateral?...lol great job, keep em coming.
Exactly. Thanks and I will keep at it.
Great video! Thank you, Marc
Thanks for the compliment
8:34 - what purpose does it serve for the H to move backward off the LOS on this play with the QB rolling to the opposite side?
Thank you for producing these videos. On the first clip, the WR could have went in motion if he was at least 5 yds. deep in the backfield at the snap, correct?
Thank you. A WR needs to establish himself as a back to be able to go in motion. The rule references 5 yards. I would not officiate it that technical. Make sure they have established themselves as being in the backfield on a play when they go in motion. If you rule them on the line of scrimmage (not a back) then it would be ruled illegal motion. Good question,
Keep those ball boys off the field!
Marc, great job. I just hope everyone who has developed bad habits watch to remind them of how important the little things are; keys, mechanics, and when to move from your position.
Thank you and appreciate your feedback
To re-emphasize, on a balanced formation line that pass near the LOS, it is critical for wings to know their keys. On the formation shown, B will have outside L side. H will have both receivers on H side, which means H should be considering downfield responsibility once they run 7-10 yards down field. L has inside receiver on their side. L should not leave the LOS. If the team shows strength to H side, the the responsibilities flip. Understand your keys, and you can cover LOS passing penalties better.
Great stuff for sure. First year official here and each week is packed with relevant plays and issues we all encounter. Love it
As a 1st year referee, I appreciate these videos. Thank you for posting.
Thank you and glad they are helpful to you and welcome to you as a first-year official.
Marc, great clips as usual. Also, thanks for the shout out to the victims of Helene. No doubt we are all praying for them.
Thank you.
Thank you from Northern Vermont.
Thank you
keep up the great work
Thank you
Great stuff, thank you from California.
Thank you California
@8:25 also Ump PIVOT!!!!
Thanks Marc. Shout out to the Umpire on the helmet play! He stayed with the play and ended up being apart of the tackle. Also Its concerning the below waist plays as if the coaches are teaching because they know our limitations on being able to see the less obvious ones. We have to get the ones that are obvious 100% to deter this style of play!
Thank you and great comments.
Thank you!
Great stuff as always! I have to wonder how much caffeine Marc had before recording this one - seems like he’s talking twice as fast as usual! 😂
Started in the morning after my coffee. (which was more than one). Thanks for watching and your comments
Much needed appreciate you guys, this has become apart of our pregame!!
Thank you for your comments.
Great video. Thank you for your work!
Thank you for the feedback.
