Dangers of Seeking Shelter from a Tornado in a Crawl Space
Переглядів 24 тис.11 років тому
Through my years as a meteorologist, I've had people tell me they seek shelter from tornadoes in the crawl space of their home. This can be a tragic move. If your home has a typical concrete block foundation with nothing holding the blocks together other than a thin layer of mortar, it's simply too dangerous to hide from tornadoes in your crawl space. Watch the video to see why...

March is the beginning of tornado season for much of the Southeast U.S. Are you prepared for nature's most violent storm? The video is the introduction to a series that will help you develop your tornado safety plan for your family. Visit www.CharlieNeese.com for more severe weather safety tips.
How to Program a Midland WR100 Weather Radio
Переглядів 52 тис.11 років тому
This video by television meteorologist and severe weather safety expert, Charlie Neese, details how to program the Midland WR100 (and WR120) weather radio. To find your county's code for the program, visit www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm#sametable . Once you find your county's code, use the video to help you program the radio. Third Floor Tornado Damage
Переглядів 46911 років тому
During tornadoes, seek shelter on the lowest floor. The winds in a tornado get stronger as you go up in elevation and damage in weak to moderate storms is often worse on the upper floors of a building as seen in this video.
wrong, wrong, wrong, cant get off of 12.15 a.m. a hammer will solve the problem its a piece of shit no number to call for help !!!
how do i turn down the volume of the beeps when pressing the button?
Wow! Thanks for making this complex process somewhat simpler.
Not all crawl spaces are created the same.
What if you have a single story brick home with a concrete foundation and not block? We have a solid concrete foundation that is about 4 feet below ground. I'm pretty sure that if an F4 or F5 tornado were reportedly moving towards me, I'd feel safest in the crawl space. There would be nothing left of the house, so the crawl would be the only possible safe place in a large tornado. I have driven through tornado ravaged areas where the homes are wiped completely off their foundations. Moore, OK is a good example of that. The closet would not save you in a tornado that size.
Thank you!!!
Thank you Charlie for this simple, informative video!! 🎊🎉
Just to note, the any county code setting is not as bad as you think it is. And it's good because sometimes warnings come late, but if they're issued for the county "next-door" you'll know the storms are coming, and you have time to prepare, versus where the warning is issued for the one county that's programmed, it could be too late.
Thanks man. Just got this older radio reprogrammed for my new work location.
What if it’s not a mobile home and it’s like a house with a crawl space in its garage
VERY BEST TUTORIAL
Not all crawl spaces are equal. I had a house that the crawl was 4" below grade. I actually beefed up a square directly below the hatch access. So if the house slide or fell onto it it wouldn't crush. I didn't anchor it down three feet into concrete piers. It was a lot of work, but if needed well worth it.
What about a crawl space with a poured concrete foundation? Isn’t that the same as a basement?
Great video! With your guidance, programmed weather radio very easily. Thank you!
Moved back South and this video was very helpful getting my radio set up correctly.
In some cases the the multiple S.A.M.E setting is best, in my use scenario I live where 3 counties intersect, so I have alerts setup for all 3 of those counties, though the N.O.A.A station WXJ76 operating on the 162.550MHz frequency has been out of service for several months, which leaves 2 of the counties I border without service, the county which I reside in still has N.O.A.A service and the station covering it has expanded its coverage and alerts to help reduce the outage area
Oh

Help please!!! Pasco County FL.... I am only fi ding a 5 digit code online. My radio will not work...no sou ds of static or radio reports at all. New batter uh es and all programming tones are audible. Your tutorial us so well done and appreciated...even if my result is rotten. Thank you
you have to put a ZERO (0) for the first digit of the six digit code
@@dfweurocars thank you!!!
@@fatedrivesyou7471 :)
Crawl Space is usually below grade and the floors are supported by beams surrounded by block.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thank you, I was able to follow your instructions and get our weather radio working again. It's not intuitive, so without the video, I would have failed, I'm sure!
My weather radio only shows WR120????
Charlie I have this exact radio and it does not pick up any weather or even make any static. The volume is fully up and the switch in the on position. I also hooked up an outdoor antenna. I guess the radio is defective. Any other suggestions? Thanks. Brian in Missouri
I had one with the same defect; it probably needs a new tuning chip, which is sadly not really something most people can replace. Sorry that this is a year late, but the best thing to do is just get a new one.
If you have a V5, ANY VERSION, your capacitors or tuner are possibly damaged or blown if it is squealing loudly or has no audio, so if you hear that squeal or no audio, the capacitors are blown or damaged, and the radio is dead. It would take 100 dollars to get one. Just get a V3 instead, it’s older but WAY better.
@@neptuneWX I actually did get a V3, although it did the "No Message" glitch yesterday. My V5 was not squealing, it just had no audio from the broadcast.
@@SouthernWXMedia That’s normal I believe.
@@neptuneWX Alright, I'll see if it happens next week.
Have had my WR100 for many years. Never had a problem.
Charles, Thank you SO MUCH !!! I bought my NOAA 2nd hand from Ebay, and the instructions did not come w the unit. Ive heard the weather caster , for years recommended getting a NOAA. I came across a super deal at $6, so I got it. You made EACH AND EVERY STEP.....simple and understandable. Your video was the BEST on UA-cam!
Does anyone know how to change AM or PM settings
the WR-100 doesn’t have AM nor FM
Thanks
Sir Charles, this is an excellent instructional video. Tks.
Thank you!!
Thank you ,, mine is set up and ready
THanks for telling me this! I had no idea. I thought since the blocks were concrete (like how some shelters are made of concrete) that it would not get damaged by a tornado. Scary!
That antenna though
Not sure 🤔
what if you do not hear anything on the channel 1-7?
Michael Johnson the tuner is dead
You probably cannot recieve a NWR station in that spot
ok thanks

mine just says no message
mine too
That neans there is no active apert
V1-3 glitch if it has an alert, if no alert issued its fine
If I have mine set on any do I have to put in county code? Or will it go off for all locations in the broadcast area?
if you want any then put any, you can set it up for single county or multiple though
Now, could someone teach us how to build a great storm shelter in a crawl space home.
Shovel, buckets, strong backs, and concrete. Don't forget to add vents for air in case your trapped for a few hours.
Yup I sure think you can
Thank you, All it was doing was beeping every time I pressed a button
C. Neese you make this so much harder than it needs to AND call your self a Meteorologist. Not Television Meteorologist and severe weather safety expert. DUH
guess i’d like to see you become the former job one day then
Well i'd ban you from youtube if i was the owner. You are the meanest person on youtube that i wish in never knew.
HOW ABOUT YOU MAKE A VIDEO OF HOW TO DO IT, YOU'D PROBABLY BE 9999999999x WORSER, I NEVER USE COUNTY CODE, I GLITCH HAPPEND AND I FOUND MY COUNTY NAME ON IT, I DID NOT HAVE TO DO COUNTY CODE.
@@jayCLTeeee thanks
They called SAME codes, not "FIPS" you idiot
They are called "SAME" and "FIPS" codes. Same thing.
WX Exeter, SAME codes have a meaning: Single Area Message Encoding or something like that while "FIPS" is probably: Frickin Idiot Person Sucks
I'd like to see YOU be a meteorologist
I got this beep about the battery being low, even though it was plugged in, it kept using up batteries like crazy.
I hope this isn't to silly of a comment but I had it plugged in (my WR100), made sure the outlet worked, turned it on and listened to it then took out the batteries....it went off. My power supply was bad, so just make sure your power supply is working or you will be replacing batteries way too often. I hope this helps (sorry it was a year ago but I just found your comment)
I cannot stop a high pitch squeal from my unit .
Same here.
Same here
Replace it with a WR120 or get an older model.

Same there
Uhhh yeah. Good thing my crawl space is actually underground so I will be seeking shelter in my crawl space.
Same here I got 1 at a yard sale be better of with a older wx radio or a hanheldscanner
This piece of junk does not broadcast any weather stations. All it does is make a high pitched tone on every channel. This unit is like new. Many other consumers have this problem with the WR100 weather radio. I would never buy another midland weather radio again. Thanks for posting the video.
Same thing happening with mine. Brand new out of the box.
No wonder I see them on eBay for like $6
what about using the crawl space closet without actually getting underground? our bathroom has window and the most interior room without a window is the crawl space closet. can take shelter in that closet?
cute lamp, 'charlie'.
villan He looks like a charlie
I have a crawl space but live in an area where we don't get tornados VERY rare if we ever see one. However I was thinking the crawl space to go to IF. My house is on a normal concrete (not block) foundation. Is this save then?
+flexor212000 I wouldn't risk going underground unless you have a basement
great information, well presented. Please make more videos of this quality.
I love you. Your love for Jesus and your family is inspiring and awesome!
Wow! What a story.....what a beautiful person... What a great message!
