440 Gallon Coral Tank Flow Upgrade - RFG!
The iPhone 16
Is the stock pump that bad ? I just picked this tank up and plan on doing a Softie tank. Have had Fowlr tanks in the past but never a Reef tank. Will also be running a Sicce wave maker the Nano 1000 i believe.
In this particular model, when we purchased it, the stock pump was pretty weak. Also, since we wanted to run this tank without powerheads to take up space, we needed a pump capable of delivering at least 250 GPH. In all fairness, the pump we chose is a bit over powered - but it works great, when paired with that 1/2in Random Flow Generator.
@@vivid.creative.aquatics ah ok just picked one up and was worried it I’m running it with. A wave maker as well. Appreciate it.
Pagoda corals will be powered by RFG simply the best for all systems and great customer service.
Sounds like a happy accident from the 3d printer.
And that was over 7 years ago - you should check out how far we have come since this time vividcreativeaquatics.com/
So it’s put out all those micro bubbles?
No, the bubble are a result of air being injected into the pump as way to see the flow leaving the nozzle. Since there's no good way to visually see what the Random Flow Generator is actually doing, the micro bubbles provide a visual without disrupting the effect. With that said, if you do the "bubble scrubbing " method in your reef tank, the RFG is a great way to disperse those bubble around your tank.
Hello, is there a kit that fits the Waterbox Cube 20 as well? Would this be the same kit as the cube 10?
Yes - the Waterbox cube 20 and 10, as well as the Peninsula Mini all have the same stock fittings. They each use the 16.5 to 1/2in Loc-line adapter, which is included in our single 1/4in RFG dual 1/4in RFG and single 1/2in RFG Flow kits. The available Random Flow Generator Flow Kit options for these tanks can be found here: vividcreativeaquatics.com/waterbox-compatible/waterbox-10-20-cube-systems/
awesome
Is that an upgraded pump? If so what pump ya running thank in advanced!
It's the IM MightyJet 538, however, with the increased plumbing size we implemented, we need to run it on the lowest setting, to keep from splashing water right out of the tank. Thinking of downgrading to the MightyJet 326. Either way, the pump combined with the 1/2in RFG creates wavemaker-like flow in this 15-gallon tank.
what’s the pvc for ?
We wanted to maximize flow, and the stock elbow that came with this tank, had a less than 1/2in inner diameter. So we replaced both the pipe and elbow. Worked like a charm - we run that pump at the lowest setting
@@vivid.creative.aquatics i have a sicce 1.5 and i’m gonna get a RFG for it will it be enough flow or should i get a small power head ?
@@phish5213assuming you're setting up the same or similar sized tank, a single 1/2in RFG or even a dual 1/4in RFG setup, paired with that pump, will flow that tank. I would say, start without an extra powerhead, and see how that does. I think you'll find RFG will be more than enough
@@vivid.creative.aquatics it’s the exact same tank the IM 15, i was gonna buy the stuff now, should i get the dual head or the single head RFG?
@@phish5213 in this tank we started with the 1/2in, but have since switch over to the dual 1/4in setup. Both work really well, with this pump, but we have to run the pump on the lowest setting. The single 1/2in RFG would move the tank like an over-sized Wave Maker, but the dual 1/4in is a little more restrictive, and as a result, moves water around a little more evenly. I think if we had a slightly smaller pump, i would go back to the 1/2in RFG
Does it add micro bubbles or any bubbles ?
The Random Flow Generator itself, does not create bubbles, or micro bubbles. In these demonstration ls, we added air to the line to show the flow. Some users however, use the RFG in this way to disperse fine bubble for the "bubble scrubbing" method
Can’t figure out how to fit on my Waterbox 25. Are you pulling off the stock nozzle? Or unscrewing it? Because none of the attachments will fit through the hole if I unscrew the stock nozzle.
If you predeceased one of out per-configure flow kits that are compatible with the Waterbox Cube series, then you should have our 16.5mm to 1/2in Waterbox adapter. To install the kit, you simply pop off the flare tip on the stock nozzle. This will reveal the ball connector . then attach the adapter to the ball connector and then the RFG flow kit directly to the adapter. If you look at the first two flow kits on this page - the 16.5mmm adapter is the smaller adapter included in each of these kits vividcreativeaquatics.com/waterbox-compatible/ if all else fails give us a call anytime between 8am and 5pm MST and we'll be happy to help - support number is on our website at: vividcreativeaquatics.com/contact/

Beautiful tank. Is there any other videos of this specific tank anywhere else?
There are more here on our UA-cam channel - but we do post a lot of vidoe of this tank on our Instagram account instagram.com/vivid_creative_aquatics/ You'll also find a full document on of the tank build at Reef2Reef in our build thread at: www.reef2reef.com/threads/134-gallon-cube-build-random-flow-generator%C2%AE-powered-mixed-reef-lots-of-pics.846184/
@@vivid.creative.aquatics thanks!
Beautiful tank. Congratulations.
thank you - we defiantly had out ups and downs with this tank and like all setups, there are on-going challenges, but for the most part, we are very pleased with the outcome so far.
Maybe this very first comment will win two for me! I have seen other videos about these and they look fantastic! Happy reefing.
I'm sure we can get get you something - send us an email on our contact form and mention this comment vividcreativeaquatics.com/
@@vivid.creative.aquatics Thank you! I sent an email and I am excited to use them right away on my 1/2” loc-line fittings for my 90 gallon mixed reef.
I have a freshwater planted tank 1.30x60x60 with two outlets each corner do you recomend flex single or dual? The overflow is in the middle
I would do single RFG on each outlet. And, if you have a planted tank I would also recommend to oversize the RFGs. This will create a more broad randomized flow in stead of a super strong punchy flow
@@vivid.creative.aquatics thanks very much, greetings
Need one for my nuvo 15
soy de México como puedo adquirir su producto??
Shame you don't make them for the Waterbox all in ones.
This video really displays the issue with the nozzle - it sputters like hell at the surface of the water creating a ton of noise. You can use foam etc to silence it and after a few months they seem to break in but these nozzles are actually hell to fight until they are silent.
You need a smarter reefs skimmer my man! Cleans itself, much less odor because the cleaning fleece dries out. No cups to empty. More time to enjoy coffee.
Did you guys ever decide to make larger nozzles available?
We do have the RFG Nozzles for 1.25in, 1.5in and 2in schl40 PVC pipe, as seen in this video available. The larger 4in RFG shown is not a model that is in regular production, but can be done apon request. If you need one larger than that, we would be interested in discussing it. To see the full lineup of Random Flow Generator Nozzles, click here: vividcreativeaquatics.com/product-category/random-flow-generator-nozzles/
@@vivid.creative.aquatics I need to recheck my outlets but I believe they are either 2.25" or 2.5" threaded. I need 4 for my closed loop. I have 4 outlets each fed by a jebao mdc10000 pump.

How much head pressure do these add?
That's a great question - Each of your Random Flow Generators have Minimum Flow and "Suggested Optional Flow" (SOF) ratings - if you stay within the SOF rating for that size RFG, you should expect to see head pressure in the 10% to 15% range. The SOF is where we think you get the best randomized flow for the least amount of head pressure. However, the more pressure you put behind the RFG, the bigger and more pronounced the effect is. So if you have the flow to spare, we encourage you to push beyond the SOF ratings.
@@vivid.creative.aquatics ok cool so we can oversize the flow more then the SOF. Working on a closed loop with DC pumps so ill plan to oversize the pumps that way i can dial back as needed
@@nathanmccook133 exactly - in fact that's how we run our own office tank with a Dual Closed loop system driving 1in RFG in a 134-Glalon cube. No power heads required 🙂 Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/yz86WwnzPDs/v-deo.html
@@vivid.creative.aquatics would using ramping/wave functions that some DC return pumps offer work with these too? Assuming the minimum surge doesnt drop below the minimum flow requirements
@@nathanmccook133 another good questions - for the best result, you really want to provide the RFG with strong, steady supply flow. The RFG will take car of the rest. With that said, you can use the features of the DC pump to dial in the flow. The rate in witch the RFG randomize (change directions) is directly related to the velocity of the flow passing through the nozzle. You can adjust the flow so that the direction change creates a sort of standing wave int he tank, similar to wave makers. Except the wave will fall in an out of resonance with the tank due to the randomly changing direction so the flow exiting the nozzle. . Now - if you have dual independent loops and an Apex, I would encourage you to hope over too Reef2Reef and check out how we ramp up/down the flow intensity to each loop over the course of a 12h and 28 minutes cycle. www.reef2reef.com/threads/134-gallon-cube-build-random-flow-generator%C2%AE-powered-mixed-reef-lots-of-pics.846184/post-9186610
Random flow generator is made by nozzle or by the pump ??
The randomized flow is created by the Random Flow Generator Nozzle (RFG). The pump is suppling steady flow, while the patented Internal design of the RFG leverages fluid dynamics to very the direction and intensity of the flow exiting the nozzle. It's able to do this with no moving parts.
Where do I get my hand on one of those thanks

Beautiful reef how many gallons and dimensions love it
Thank you - The display tank is 36in x 36in x 24in, and is approx 134 gallons. the tank sits on a stand that (with the feet) is about 31in tall, so overall height is right around 5ft 8in. A little shorter than we would have liked, but we had to fit the stand through the door.
Where can we buy the one that you had on a stick at the show in Dallas this weekend?

this is super creative and interesting. I subbed =D
Very nice👍🏻
The CW scrubber looks like it works very well. Going to put one on my main display 👌
It works extremely well. Adding a Clearwater Scrubber to your system would be a good way to go. This one took about to weeks to really get going But once it did, the screen is jam-packed with algae growth and ready to be cleaned once a week like clockwork.
where does the detritus go?
Some people will rout the end of the hose to a bucket and use the Vacuum attachment to clean the sump while doing a water change. Others will use a 10-micron sock and filter out the detritus as it gets vacuums up putting the water back into the sump
How would you compare this to the "diffuser" by 3D Reefing?
Hi Brandon - the diffuser by 3D Reefing is a nice product and we would certainly recommend it if your goal is to diffuse and mix the light better. The RD-ALV light shaping visors on the other hand work really well if you just need to shade other equipment or need help with some of the glare the light produce. The Visors will provide a little bit more control over where the light goes, while the defusers will work to spread out the light.
Do these stick on a pvc pipe?
Yes. Our larger slip-fit versions of the Random Flow Generator Nozzles are designed to snuggly fit directly to PVC pipe and require no glue or tape.
Great flow patterns for each application. Can’t wait to get them on my main display. 👍
Pool tested. Reefer approved. Great R&D 👍🏻
Great product!! Easy to snap on I recommend for every biocube owner!! No need for extra pumps!! Do all flow!! Awsomesauce thanks guys!!!!
