Phillip Torvik is an artist, producer, and songwriter from San Antonio, Texas. He began writing songs at the age of 8, and by 13 he was working with popular music production software Pro Tools. He creates music with the intention of connecting with people from all walks of life. His love for acoustic and digital instrumentation is evident in his lo-fi hip-hop/pop sound. All of his songs are self-written and self-produced. Combining his ability to play instruments (piano, drums, and guitar) with his digital know-how has allowed him to create a unique blend of sampled and organic sounds that cross over into many different genres.

This video on the subject deserves more shine. Not enough conversation about the nuance of gear and when to actually upgrade. I’ve made the mistake of buying nice gear and not having the need for it yet. Not a waste to have another tool in the tool belt, but not a smart use of short term finances. It’s super contextual to the individual as to when and IF it’s necessary to upgrade. I have music industry friends that have their studio decked to the 9’s, are amazing engineers and only get the best gear. I get it, because their skill and experience dictates that they’re operating at a level whose threshold is higher than the entry level. That’s his context, which is different than mines.
@@hersontheperson thank you so much! I couldn’t have said it better myself 🙏🏼

Been shouting 3 major choices. Fairlight, Synclavier, and ppg wave
@@Scheckiification yessss. Thought of fairlight afterwards, it’s hard to find them for sale though. All great choices!
A restored Korg PS 3300 will fetch at least $100,000. They've also just recently reissued it...by order, $13,000 ....where i am...$20,000. Oberheim Xpander's are about $10,000 here, ...i bought one in the 80's.

Gear heads are the worst. Show me that underground artist who's dope song didn't make waves due to gear quality and I'll show you a dope song that wasn't all that dope. But I do appreciate the explanation towards the end. I just hate thinking guys like me will get sucked into believing gear is the issue when it's 98% not. Believing in yourself and investing in good gear are two different things. There are a lot of steps to take before you accrue debt. Take it from a guy with a lot of debt
I 100% agree. I talk about this all the time with artists and producers. I’ve seen people be incredibly lazy and passive with their creativity thinking because they used a c800g and a 1073 that it’ll happen for them, when they’re really just trying to keep up with famous people. And I’ve worked with amazing artists that are hungry and passionate using their phone and headphones. I’ll take the the passionate artist all day! That being said, do I prefer a passionate artist with gear that is at least decent? For sure. It helps with tone, quality, my workflow on the engineering side etc. but you can also get a more than decent set up without going into debt. I think acting like the gear doesn’t make a difference is disingenuous to new artists, but that’s also not an excuse to not absolutely CRUSH it with whatever you do have access to. Thanks for watching!
Nice!
A small version of the ARP 2500 could potentially cost 75,000 USD. A vintage Buchla would potentially cost 200,000 USD. A Polyfusion Modular did cost around 30,000 USD in 1995, when a Jupiter 8 was at 2,500. A Lintronics Memorymoog could be interesting if you want to maximize spending. The most expensive EMS would be the Synthie 100. One Synthi 100 was allegedly sold via ebay in 2015 for 106,000 USD There is a prototype that would be more expensive but there is no typical market price for it obviously. A vintage Korg PS 3300 will cost about 80,000 USD.
@@drydessert4198 damn! Those are some unbelievable prices. I wouldn’t even want to play them if I had something that rare and expensive haha
@@torvikmusic There are some places (museums) where you can play these. David Morley has an old video with his vintage Buchla. And the instrument was on his albums. He sold it to pay off his house.
@@drydessert4198 there’s a museum/synth studio a few hrs from me (north Texas) that is amazing. I’d love to stop by!
A Schmidt 8 voices, around 20.000...
Ooo I’ll check em out!
@@torvikmusic Well, it's nice beast, certainly, but I guess it's hard to find one for testing IRL
@@FLH3official yeah a lot of the really obscure vintage systems are really hard to get your hands on! I’d love to some day though.
You better budget about $100k for maintenance/repair costs. Especially that CS80 with all those custom IC's. LOL
Literally 😭 gonna need someone on staff in that studio lol
Oh, and I almost forgot, the new Radiophonic from AJH Synths is right at $20k as well and that’s a new one that was introduced as I recall at the most recent Superbooth. Jomox Sunsyn is usually $20-$30k. The Macbeth M5N White also about $20k-$30k. Schmidt 8 voice brand new all day for $25k. Rhodes Chroma runs $20k or so used and $25k for the Expander or with Expander and Enabler the full blown Chroma is about $50k. Baloran The River runs $10k-$15k The original Waldorf Wave 32-Voice runs about $30k And the new Rhodes Mk 8 with effects goes for about $15k. Elka Synthex will be about $15k too.
This is a fun video. Great job! Off the top of my head and going with the idea they should be findable, I see a fairly regular amount of Oberheim FVS 4-voice synths for sale on Reverb and EBay pretty standard at $30-40k. If you also add Vemia in, you can find more of the rare and expensive vintage items and Modulars. There’s a Roland System 700 complete there for about $150k now for the November auction that is coming up. There is a $20k Moog Model 12 on Reverb still I believe and a $15k Model 15 Moog. Oberheim OBX 8 voice vintage units seem to run $15-$20k. Octave Plateau Voyetra 8 with keyboards run around $20k too I think. There was a Korg PS-3300 on Reverb for a while for $90k, but PS-3100 and PS-3200 seems to be a staple right around $20-25k. A new Buchla on Sweetwater if you kit out a 200 series 4 tier rack is about $40k. And Analogue Solutions has a few great ones in addition to the Colossus series, like the Maximus at around $30k with the keyboard and their brand new TC-5000 which with wings has discounted early bird pricing of $57k. Tone Tweakers and a few of the other vintage brokers have Moog Modulars like the IIIp available at $100k - $125k. Funny thing is I know all this because I have been building my dream synth studio over the past year so I’ve run across all of these things in the process and it was surprising how readily available almost any of these synths are if you look for them enough. Repair shops, brokers, auction sites, and general networking have helped me find everything I was looking for. Again, fun video and thank you for making it!
Great breakdown! 🔥 I’m in the very early stages of my own studio and just love diving into these things!

@@agalerex there isn’t! 😭 I literally just freestyled this into pro tools for the video and synced the phone camera haha y’all are making me want to make one though!
@@torvikmusic Please turn this into a 2+ minute(s) long song! So much potential awesomeness! It will be a tragedy if you don't. D: Also, I'm your 420'th sub. Yay me? xD
@@agalerex okay okay! I’ll work on it! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Half a mill is pretty easy with vintage modular systems. A Moog System 55, ARP 2500, Roland System 700, Emu Modular, and Buchla 200 could possibly total half a million with 5 systems. Spending half a million on eurorack is surprisingly doable as well.
@@Bata9999 100% agree! The only challenge was, I wanted to be able to find them for sale currently and be able to price them that way. A lot of those systems are never for sale or it’s very hard to find valuations for them, which would have made this a bit more challenging. But I agree some of those systems are easily over $100k and would have been a beast on this list!
This sounds amazing, keep it up!
