Nanomagic - Artist Kitty Wales
Kitty Wales has a MFA in Sculpture from University of Arizona, and a BFA in Sculpture from Boston University. She has been awarded residencies in Berlin Germany, Baku Azerbaijan, and Rhum Island, Scotland.
Wales received the 2007 Virginia Groot award, and grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. She has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US as well as in Germany, and Azerbaijan. Her work is in the permanent collection of the DeCordova Museum, the Duxbury Museum, and the Fuller Craft Museum.
Discarded household objects are materials of choice in her recent work. They contain memories of the past that morph over time, drifting in and out of original threads. Serving as historical icons, they are assembled to reanimate the memories retained.
"Each piece in this series evolves through the process of making and experimenting, as I build up multiple layers of color and texture with water-based pencils, graphite, aqua resin, epoxy putty and paper pulp. Some of these layers are visible while others are buried, erased, or altered to mimic the drifting nature of narrative memory. "

Jessica Gandolf Returns to the Figure - Artist Interview

"Sometimes, after making an abstract oil painting, I begin to sense that a body is ready to enter the painting. This body drops in from above or below in any number of ways. I sense that the painting “catches’ the figure and the dance between figure and ground begins. This tension is really the subject of the painting. The figure might be indicated by contour line or be fully three dimensional....

I’m an artist and I think no artist is self taught. I never went to art school or anything like that, but every single one of us is learning from the artists that came before us and inspire us, and from the forms and colors all around us, and I mean that very literally and specifically rather than in some “vibes” type of way.

W❤W. Blown away in the morning time in bed where it’s so cold and the only reason to get up is to get the beloved 4-leggeds outside to pee, so THANK YOU, you give me another reason, to clean some stuff up, recycle some old creations into something else, keep the chi of old things moving. Just adore your automata and theaters! You remind me. Of the Brothers Quay crossed with Louise Bourgeois with a dash of Albrecht Dürer and the Brothers Grimm! An amazing original. What a TREAT! EXCELSIOR! 💗❤️♾️❤️‍🩹💓🧿🪬🧿

Earlier on, I considered myself 'self taught' because I did not go to art school. But most of my art knowledge, i.e. the 'how to' was taught to me from many sources, including other artists, as I honed my skills to become the artist I am today. Much more than can be taught in art school. And now as I grow, the term 'self taught' as I venture out, takes on a different meaning. I think, unfortunately, there are those that look down on the term, even if you are exceptionally good. I get occasionally someone ask which art school did I go to. When I tell them I was self taught, you can see them discounting my work like is not valid without an accreditation.
