A conversation about the Annapolis Boat Show, folks we met, and the boats that sparked joy! EP | 19
Gillian and I recap our thoughts on the Annapolis boat show. We talk about our favorite aspects of the experience, which had more to do with happens at the show, rather than the show itself. And after our conversation, as a bonus for you boat nerds, I included a bunch of our raw, 'tourist' cam footage of the monohulls we enjoyed the most. (Note: Yes, I realize now that I wrote Garcia 'Expedition' not 'Exploration' in the video... dumb dumb...)

Zen and the Art of Teak Rejuvenation - Say No to Varnish! EP | 18
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Місяць тому
Boat restoration projects don’t have to be hard. A simple update of the boat locker lids with some primer and paint, and a rejuvenation of the teak slats in the cockpit completely change the vibe of our old sailboat. The Total Boat Total Tread has proved to be a solid product, and is super grippy, which is what we wanted. Penofin marine oil is absolutely incredible. It’s super easy to apply and...
Boat cleaners: You'll never guess what worked best! EP | 17

After trying over a dozen cleaners, including boat cleaners and household cleaners, we finally found that brought our decks back to life! In this episode, Gillian goes in hard on our awful looking decks and brings them back to looking white (well... mostly white!). Then, we apply Penofin Marine Oil to all the toe rails and our old sailboat starts looking pretty spiffy! #sailing #oldboat #refit ...

The DIY carpenter is back with another project: reclaim a 'catch all' sea berth and make some proper storage cabinets that I can use to store all my tools and supplies on the sailboat. While I'm no carpenter, I'm pretty pleased with how these turned out. This episode is dedicated to Leo, my father in law, who was a huge supporter of our channel. We love our new "Battlecat" inflatable dinghy we bought from Pop Board Co (www.popboardco.com). The Hangkai 4-Stroke outboard motor we ordered from Amazon arrived completely broken, so we pivoted and bought a Torqueedo instead. What a great choice! It's a great companion to our inflatable dinghy, it silent, it's light and easy to transport.... We just unlocked summer fun in the marina! #sailboa...

What RayMarine instruments still work on this old boat? Depth? Speed? Wind Direction? EP | 11

Our old sailboat is a work in progress. In this episode we try to figure out whether some RayMarine instruments we inherited with the boat still work or not. In this episode we learn how to catch a drone from the back of a bobbing sailboat for the first time. Super sketchy... don't recommend! We also take the time to inventory our ground tackle system made up of a CQR achor, some old chain and a ton of rope, and take it out to test for the first time. Totally agree. Watching other channels get $1M+ boats (Wynns, SLV, RR2) and seeing all their struggles shaking out all the flaws in equipment and design... More inclined to find some thing a few years old that has shown itself to be sea worthy, well equipped, and gremlin free.

    Excellent job. I need the same. For me a separate pick up for the polishing loop and the engine would be preferable. The engine pick up just off the bottom of the tank and the polishing circuit laying horizontal on the floor. The polishing pick up to be as large a diameter pipe as possible with a larger capacity pump. My engine has been stopped where the pick up is clogged before the fuel even gets to the filter.

    For me the pride of seeing my boat clean and polished, well maintained, gives me deep satisfaction. As a former liveaboard it is a matter of respect for your vessel and yourself. Zen and the art of boat maintenance requires self-motivation or you pay someone to do it or it all goes to sh*t. I have seen boats at my harbor that have not been touched in years. Very sad. Great channel, Mahalo.

    Standing rigging: Marvel mystery oil is not falsely advertised. It should penetrate and loosen those turnbuckles. I have never run it through an engine, though. I have used PB Blaster as a penetrant, also I know the insurance agent will say total replacement of the standing rigging is the only answer. For now could you replace the turnbuckles and fittings? Just the rusty bits.

    I've restored several yachts over the years and have found that toilet cleaner is a great cheap way to clean mouldy fibreglass decks and hulls. It is the phosphoric acid in products like "Toilet Duck" that really makes short work of this awful job. High pressure washing also works a treat on fibreglass but you need to be really careful not to blast timber, which it will destroy. Teak is best cleaned using an alkaline solution and any outdoor deck cleaner should generally work. Trisodium phosphate, a favourite prep-cleaner of house painters, also works well. Applying a weak acid solution after cleaning the teak will neutralise the cleaner and will also brighten the teak, which darkens with age. Rinsing thoroughly after with fresh water is essential and the wood needs to be bone dry before oiling or sealing. Happy cleaning!

    Liked the video. I bought a new-to-me C&C 29 last fall. It had been neglected. In fact, green moss was growing on the hull and the teak grabrails. When I got it to the slip this past spring, I used a cheap Chinese-made pressure washer to remove it all. Within hours, the entire boat was was deep cleaned. I'm a guy who believed in shower cleaner, but the pure power of the pressure washer did everything a lot of elbow grease would have accomplished.

    • @SeaGillian
      @SeaGillian Місяць тому

      @kylemacarthur3177 oh I so wish we took that route but the decks are so fragile (and fragile fiberglass on old soft spots) that I feared turning some deeply precarious spots into emergency projects with the pressure we’d need for those old stains (I tested a softer shot that didn’t get the results). The great part about the hand scrub was being able to mark out all the tiniest spots that needed attention on deck. My power washer is my other lover (sorry Matt) but I’ve also been destructive with it at home (also, sorry Matt!) so took to hands and knees out of an overabundance of precaution. Totally agree though, if possible for the project, pressure washer ftw!

Grew up in chula vista ca. have fun you will not regret it!🤣 PS always crew on 0ther peoples boats good way to learn. Best to you and your lady and the deck looks wonderful !!
