As requested, a follow up to my previous video, this time showing how I get my 6'4" frame in and out of my 1946 Piper J-3 Cub, both front and rear seats.
The shoes I'm wearing are the Propét Men's Kenton Mid Cut Sneaker, available from Amazon at: amzn.to/40lhfBv

It's Civil Air Patrol's Birthday!! OR IS IT!?!?!?

Today I'm here to talk about why 1 December 1941 may not really be the birthday of Civil Air Patrol, depending on how you look at it - and why I'm OK with that anyways. For much, much more information, please check out "An Honorable Place in American Airpower" by Frank Blazich Jr, available here: www.airuniversity.af.edu/Portals/10/AUPress/Books/B_0168_BLAZICH_AN_HONORABLE_PLACE_IN_AMERICAN_AIR...

Civilian airplanes dropping BOMBS in World War 2?!?
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 місяці тому
From May of 1942 to August of 1943, civilian airplanes and pilots were armed with 100lb and 250lb general purpose bombs as well as 325lb depth charges, hunting for German Uboats in the waters of the Atlantic. In this video I discuss some of the history behind how this came to be, and examine some of its impacts on the war effort. But mainly I just want to help spread awareness of this unique ti...

The "Piper Patrol" - WW2 Piper CAP concept
Переглядів 824 місяці тому
In this video I talk about an advertisement I recently found for something called the "Piper Patrol," essentially a civilian L-4A intended specifically for Civil Air Patrol usage. While I am so far unsure whether any of these aircraft ended up being purchased or produced, it is interesting to look at the advertisement and compare it to a standard J-3C or L-4A. If you happen to know more about t...

    My father was a test pilot at piper there in Lock Haven Pennsylvania... he and his buddy Jr. trunk... And of course they were shenanigans they took off parallel to each other because the paid Runway Lock Haven is very wide can a crosswind they were blown into each other they were fired but we hired later that afternoon I don't know who fired and who retired old man Piper or pug My father was 59 and 170 lbs and he like to fly the cub from the front seat... and that's a J-3 and adjust the trim front seat one day he was smoking and lost a cigarette of course they went back towards the rear seat in the baggage compartment he carried the thermostat to coffee with him he does the floorboard as best as he could cuz he didn't want to burn up Another time he was flying along I had to fly an hour and 3/4 off on each airplane before the government took over plane Well he looked over to see a orange brown and white civil are not explored Stenson ring the wing his story was he ducked into a cloud I lost them why he was never written up for that I don't know

    Ha! Show a video of you getting in and out of a Cub. I'm 5' 11" and can get in the front seat but I don't want anybody to watch me do it. The back seat is no problem. Being old with arthritis is my limiting factor.

    Thank you for verifying the rumors about CAP anti-submarine work. CAP was used for a lot of things during WW2 but not much has been written about that subject. Do you have any book suggestions? With fuel rationing (especially rubber rationing) it would seem that the civilian aviation was grounded for the duration, but there are rumors of CAP working with Border Patrol and with different law enforcement and military outfits inside of CONUS. Some pre-war ranchers used light planes on sprawling western ranches--were they drafted into CAP or did the ranchers obtain fuel and other aviation supplies on special allotments?

    • @CoastalPatrolCub
      @CoastalPatrolCub 3 місяці тому

      Not that I'm aware of, however 90 airplanes were lost, and 26 crew members were killed, to include five permanently lost at sea. But I am not aware of any being lost to enemy action, although it may be possible. I think in most cases u-boats that were spotted chose to dive and run away rather than get crew members out to try to man the deck guns. I think they recognized that our little airplanes were more of an annoyance than a threat directly, but they knew we could call in bigger guns, so their best defense would be to get away from where they had been spotted as soon as possible.

    G'day, Old Ultralight Aeroplanologist here... I spent about 7 years as the Aerotow Launch Controller for an outfit using the prototype Bailey,-Moyes Dragonfly to decorate the Sky with Rogallos in the 1990s...(backtrack me to my Playlists to fact check that....). Anyway, when towing ANYTHING, it is conventional to rig at least ONE release-mechanism to enable the Towline to be released by the Tow-Pilot... Also, to cater for possibly failed Release Mechanisms, it is further considered Best Practice to have a Weak-Link at each end of the Towline..., One G at the Load-end, and 1.5 G at the Tug end, with G being the Take-off Weight of the Rogallo + Pilot... In your application, "G" might better be The (Calculated) Aerodynamic Drag, of your "Winged Shuttlecock" At the VNE of your Cub. That way your Load should Klingon nice and secure, at all Acceptable Airspeeds..., And if you hook it on a Powerline or a Treetop then It will be safely left behind Without Yawing you off-course, Or Breaking your Airframe at it's Attachment. Just(ifiably ?) sayin'. Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

    • @CoastalPatrolCub
      @CoastalPatrolCub 9 місяців тому

      That is a very sensible point, thank you! I will say this is not intended to go very far behind the airplane, so if I'm dragging it into trees or power lines things have already gone very, very wrong. But if I can avoid making a bad situation worse I'll do it! 😁 The airplane end is easy as the line is not solidly connected to anything right now, so I can just let go essentially. But a breakaway link on the birdie end would be a great idea. I'll implement something before the next test flight!

      @@CoastalPatrolCub Excellent ! We used to use Venetian Blind-Cord/Builder's String-Line for tying the actual Tow-Rings to the Rings spliced on the ends of the Towrope ; using the Blind-Cord's labelled breaking-strain to figure out the number of turns around the Rings before tying off. Because we had people at both ends, we were a bit zealous about it, the Tug Pilot and the Rogallo Pilot both had mechanical Release Cables, most Hangies had their mechanical Release on the top of the A-Frame, at one end of a Bridle going through the Tow-Ringwith the other end this off to a Slip-knot on the Chest of the Pilot - most of whom carried Hook-Knives as a last resort (!)... And the Weak-Links were for Wind,-Shear, Clear-Air Turbulence, and Nose-Up Pitch Departures... My Party Trick was to check the Rig, hook up the Towrope, Radio to the Tug Pilot that everything was set to go...; and then after they lifted off I was to command the Tug to "Release Release RELEASE !" Any time the Rogallo had 40° or more of Bank, and was heading Away from the Towrope...; At which point they could not Shift enough Weight Far enough..., to overpower the Towrope's pull (285 Lb Static Thrust...). They were "Locked Out" of the Control Circuit, by Physics - and by the time the Tug Pilot reacted and the load came off the Tow ; they were banking between 60° & 90°, when suddenly their Kite began to behave obediently in Roll again - and they paid us $10 to try again. We might have broken a dozen Weak-Links in 500 Tows, and our Outfit never hurt any of the Customers...(!). Such is life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

      Yep, battery is built in. They say it has about an 8 hour run time, but my Cub only has a 3 hour run time so I haven't tested the full battery life yet! 🤣 That said I flew about an hour and a half today and barely dented the battery. The 12V plug on the far right is used for charging, I have a separate power brick that plugs into that port and charges the battery. I will likely be doing another video soon showing the internals when I modify it to remove the push to talk switch and add in some more USB ports.
