Justinian Tamusuza: Okukoowoola Kw'Ekkondeere for solo horn
Ugandan composer Justinian Tamusuza wrote this piece (which translates loosely to "horn call from far away") for Adam Lesnick in 2006 to be premiered at the International Horn Symposium that year in Cape Town. Several extended techniques are used to imitate traditional Kigandan drumming rhythms and vocal melodies including quarter tones, hand bends, and stopped horn. In the end the player removes several tuning slides and plays through the open tubes creating a percussive effect along with tapping along the instrument.
This recording is part of The Horn Around the World, a project during the COVID-19 pandemic presenting six solo horn pieces, one from each inhabited continent, all by living composers, at the 53rd International Horn Symposium.

Austin, are you using a mute? I’m performing this in April, and am stumped by the half valve request of the composer .
Just in case anyone else is wondering: The half valve combination varies depending on the horn. When I recorded it on this Alexander 103 I had all the valves halfway down except for the 3rd valve which was about 3/4 of the way down. I put my 1st finger between the 1st and 2nd valves and used that to operate both to make sure they were always at the same place. I also had a piece of sticky note attached to my bell flare as a visual reference point to how far down to have my 3rd valve.
Thanks, it's really helpful to have a recording of this with piano accompaniment! This I'm my first time hearing the piano and I'm doing this piece for an audition in 3 days time... And of course you played great :)
