I loved seeing these in Glendale, CA. But now I live in Oklahoma (very heavy drought followed by ridiculous ice-not snow: ICE storms). How long would I need to leave it in a pot before I could safely plant it outside to fend for itself?

It might never survive on its own in Oklahoma. But if you wanted to experiment - knowing it might not survive - I would leave it in a pot and transplant it in the spring once it reaches ~5-feet tall.

Gonna REVERSE blow-your-mind... Go ahead and find out what the exact taxonomic qualification for "tree" is. Then tell me that Japanese are wrong about bamboo being culturally thought of as a tree. Then go and re-visit the banana argument from that earlier nit-picker. Don't get me wrong - when I was younger, I fought tooth and nail about teaching people "no, that's just a LARGE GRASS". Imagine my shock to find out that I did those large grasses a disservice by declaring them "not trees" just because of a culural bias that purported itself to be founded on scientific principles...
