I feel that keeping separation requires you to lock out the blocker. Placing the hand flat and with fingers facing up allows the blocker to collapse the arm and to lock up your chest by grabbing your chest plate. I have the players turn the thumbs out to stack the bones and to brace with the outside foot compromise the angle of the blocker.

STOP coaching kids NOT to false step. False steps are good. They put the foot at the right shin angle to get them moving. IF they do not false step then they have to use slower, weaker muscles to push their hip over their ankles far enough to take off.

Here's a crazy idea that got lost a long time ago... If you play on the line, your only job is to secure it... Can someone explain to me when it became ok to get your ass kicked and pushed back 5 yards off the ball and still feel like you have anything to teach about the position lol? There used to be a time when we'd call these guys out on their bs...Bust now, it's OK to teach techniques and moves to people who can't even do job number 1...Holding the line lol...Good lord this universe is so weak these days

    • @tommyromanowski

The game changed bud. If all you do is try to “hold the line” you’re going to lean and get tossed immediately. There’s more to the trenches now than just running into each other.

As part of the drill progression, the hands behind the back helps emphasize the proper athletic position with the chest up and the butt down. This also places the early emphasis on the feet which is critical to proper stalk blocking. Thanks for the question. Good luck this season.
