I just test fit my Pypes X pipe system and it's about a foot too short from reaching my Hedman long tubes. It's a behind the tire exit so there's not a lot of flexibility considering how it's hung. I have a 65 impala and the kit is supposedly made for my vehicle. Disappointing when stuff doesn't fit right out of the box.
It's really a bit of a conundrum, and some of it is related to my parts choice and not necessarily the fault of Pypes. The first is my headers. I replaced a set of corroded headers that I had originally put on the car probably 15yrs ago. But I bought those over the counter, from a shop that no longer exists and unfortunately I couldn't remember what brand they were. When I bought my new set, I had only online reviews to go by. When they arrived I lined them up to the old headers and could see they were 3-4 inches shorter. I knew immediately that I would likely be replacing my entire exhaust. So I started planning my exhaust. I wanted something I could install myself but I was very particular about the muffler I wanted to use. I wanted to use mufflers from Black Widow and Pypes just happened to sell a "use your own muffler" kit. So, the shorter header length and muffler choice combined are the brunt of the blame for my scenario. Initially I started from the back by hanging the tailpipe over the axle as there's not a lot of flexibility on where that's going to fit. I ended up about a foot short of reaching the header. I then tried from the header back and saw that the x-pipe placement was fairly good as the x-pipe was properly passing through the exhaust notches in the transmission crossmember and could really only be changed by a few inches. This reaffirms the probability that the muffler length is an issue. I'm using the Black Widow Venom 250 muffler which is advertised as an 18" muffler. I accept the blame for my choices, but I definitely feel strongly that Pypes needs to supply longer straight sections of the pipes that can be cut down so anyone can install the kit without sourcing additional components.
Have the same system on my Chevelle, but dropped the x-pipe. I think it's better on higher rpm, buts all about taste. It keeps the "thumpy" sound from idle all the way up.
I have toyed with the idea. Obviously would take the right buyer as this is a top shelf restoration with no expense spared in the build. But if that right person would come along i would consider it. The car just sits. I am far too fussy. It has never seen a drop of rain and.never been out after dark. I put it on the road in june of 2016 and it has a little over 2000 miles on it since the frame off nut and bolt resto.
Your Chevelle looks and sounds great. What size wheels and tires are you running? How much have you lowered the suspension? I have a '69 GTO and am looking to upgrade the stance. What wheels are those? Last question, least cruising drone, race pro or violator? Thanks
Thanks! Wheels are 18 x10 and 18 x8 Bonspeed Huntingtons. Nitto 555g2 tires 295/45 and 245/35s. Suspension has UMI 1" drop springs in the rear and Viking DA coilovers in the front. The Violators for as agressive as they are have ZERO highway drone.
thats a nice chevelle. i have the same system on a 68 lemans vert. tunnel rammed pontiac on e85. its an awesome exhaust and no drone but boy if you fire it up in a garage with the pipes facing the wall it will make your eyes cross lol. again, nice car
Chevelle sounds great. Do you have an x pipe or h pipe installed? Also are the mufflers installed backwards? I have read when installed backwards the Violators have a different tone. Definitely going the Pypes route on my 55 Chevy!
Thank you for the compliment. I run an X pipe and have the mufflers installed directionally correct. I have read the same thing about the violators but tbey sound so good this way i did not mess with them :)
They do sound good. How is the in cab cruise noise say 2000-3000? Also do you like your serpentine belt setup? I have been thinking of going this route instead of vbelt.
@@ansleyjohnson3361 that is the best thing about the violators, there is zero drone and they are very well behaved at cruising , but when you pour the throttle to them they are just nasty! In a good way. I have the Billet Specialties Tru Trac and VERY happy with it. Everything fit like a glove, looks killer and no belt squeal..
How loud is it driving down the street at 40-50mph? Can you hear your radio? I have the race pros on my '72 and they are actually pretty quiet. Too quiet!
I had the race pro and street pro both just did not have enough growl for me. Violators are perfect..purr like a kitten at cruising speed, but just nasty when you want them to be.

did you start at the back and work forward? i typically had pretty good luck with the fit of their x pipe systems
