    60 to displacement requires 2,5 kW/cbm water, means, that just to displace the water and move the boat you need min. 150 kW. And i am not talking about the losses you will have at speed of 15 knotes, which from my point of view require double energy. But okay you can just travel at 8 knotes, and here my estimate is about 200 kW. Ok so far so good. The is a solar constant 1,3 Watts per square meter, means lets assume the solar panels are 15m x 30 m=450 sqm. Ok add a bit because of the overall special construction, reduce a bit because the panel construction itself, lets say you end up with 500 sqm, Which is really a lot. That means you have a potential power source of 500 x 1,3= 650 kW. So far so good. But there are losses by the solar panel efficiency, which vary from 0,15-0,2, and you have the efficiency of solar radiation terms of incoming angle and radiation power, ok lets say you have best condition all the time: 650 kW x 0,2= 130 kW. This is not working during night. And there are no other load calculated, for light, for heating, for analytics, for whatever. So the cannot make it far. Saying they have battery power for three days sailing? 200 kW/h x 72 h= 14.400 kW = 14,4 MW ? C'mon guys. Anyway a good approach for a better world, but the most powerful source they didn't use, which is the accumulated indirekt power of sun=wave energy.

    It's too late our goose is already cooked but this is good anyway. There are currently at least 47 self reinforcing feedback loops already triggered and baked into the cake of planetary chemestry whose cumulative effect will be exponential in nature. We are under the gross misconception that we are a good species going somewhere important and that at the last minute we will correct our errors and God will smile on us. It is delusion.

    15 Millions euros... and you come up with an 85 ton slug that has it's propellers mostly outside the flow of water? The. Shear. Hubris. Of this design and construction is astonishing. You waste so much energy churning and lifting water above the surface in addition to the vortices created behind the flat transoms. You would have been faster and more efficient bolting together two sailing hulls with saildrives, replacing the diesels with electric motors. Probably about 1/3 the cost or better, too.

    It's pretty obvious this craft is a catamaran and a trimaran. the pontoons have enough boyency to keep the main hull out of the water when seas are calm. That is to keep the wetted surface to a minimum. Important when you have to keep energy use down. However when conditions get choppy the main hull keeps the vessel afloat. The whole concept is ingenious. It does look like the propellers are half blocked by the pontoons. What's with that?

      Looks like a refurbished and redesigned monohull stuck on two floats to me. But no: this qualifies as a catamaran. With a trimaran the central hull is the main floating body with the other two giving support and balance.

    Neat! Definitely not as viable as sail but pretty interesting. Idk if solarpower is the only power (for cooking and systems). According to wikipedia cruising speed is 7.5 kn and max is 14. Slightly faster than a yacht's average, but sailing is still greener and more cost effective.

    What do they eat, how do they cook food, by using the electricity generated by the solar panels?

  • @davidw3023
    @davidw3023 9 років тому

    Its cool they can lift the rear panels up and help progress. Probably more efficient if they made the panels out of something lighter say sailcloth for example and then put them a little higher maybe on a mast. I suppose they could then ditch some of that useless weight perhaps batteries and electric motors. Its all all a learning experience I suppose.

    Terrible video quality. is this cutting edge technology? Appears they are cruising at a snails pace, whats the point ? This is not going to win anyone over. Sail would be a huge improvement on this. Captain Cook would laugh at this progress.

    Chomsky makes no sense. He says governments routinely view their own people as enemies and withhold pertinent information from them, so why wouldn't state-sponsored terrorism be a likely premise in this case? 9/11 was a military coup d'état by the Pentagon and Federal Reserve. Hollywood made sure people would "never forget" by brainwashing us with predictive programming, preparing the public with the myth. The mega ritual occurred in the macrocosm but it also continues to occur in the microcosm of paper notes we call the "U$ Dollar". The attacks are literally printed in our money as part of a massive population control experiment that empowers the perpetrators. Literally, the fate of the economy and our entire American society depends on the events of this single day.

    I can only see this as a record setter. And the guy comparing this to the Wright brothers. Are you high. People have been sailing around the world before oil was used for anything more then keeping a light. The mayflower would run circles around that thing. A sail can be fixed at sea. Can a solar panel? Would you want to? You can go pretty fast in gale force winds. This thing would only go with the wind which you would have to hope isn't pushing to away from your destination. And at 4 knots its not going to be easy to dodge storms. And in gale winds I'm sure you risk losing Amy wind generators you might have on board.
