Modelling a diamond patterned glass in Maya

In this video Elf demonstrates how to model and light a diamond patterned glass in Maya 2023. This technique can be used for a plethora of other scenarios such as floor tiles, Chesterfield sofas, windows etc. Following on from the modelling Elf demonstrates a nice technique for lighting and rendering the glass with a product photography focus.
Usually, when modelling a glass, I would work from the outside in, but because the diamond pattern is on the inside, it makes sense to reverse the workflow. This is a great way to go about modelling a diamond pattern, and by using select similar, it is simple to modify the depth and scale of the repeating diamonds too. It is important to be meticulous with the number of duplicates and rotation of these, as you will want to ensure that there are no gaps between each iteration.

      @dumitrucalughin5114 Change the Maya scene working unit to centimeters from Maya's preferences -> settings -> Working Units -> Linear -> Centimeter. For some unknown reason, Maya's mash network does not work as it should if the scene working unit is set to anything but centimeters...

    The UV channel was being created by Unreal, for light baking.

    Sliding the keyframes doesn't change the time for me... everything happens at its originally baked time.

    Thanks for this video. I'm still learning usd and I had a question. What would you say at the moment are the disadvantages of usd workflow between maya and unreal. And also. You did the update for uv. How does that update the usd in unreal? Or do you have to re-export another usd in order to fix a problem you come across in unreal within the scene you import? Is there a smooth working?

      For experience. No displacement map for USD preview but it's the only way that work, otherwise, using blender for testing, but I think this issue comes from Unreal and we will need to wait for Unreal MaterialX release. But being able to have a full scene of actors ready in unreal is really cool tough.

      @@AnellaVisuals Sorry for the late reply. Too much work. The model is fully complete. With uvs and everything. The problem is it was all done in max and naturally the shaders need to be made in maya from scratch. That's a little too tough for me as a rigger.     thank you for the tutorial. I made everything like you. One thing is, that only the Base Texture is imported from Maya. roughness and metal texture information did not work and didnt transfer wright to unreal. Is that normal? Everything looks flat

      Thank you my friend, it really means a lot. Maya has a heap of tools for creating masks procedurally but do you mean specifically drawing with a graphics tablet or a mouse or something?

      @@flashyskye - It is possible..... however... I'd also say that there is probably a good reason this is frequently done in software like Substance (or Mudbox).... Maya's painting tools are sub-standard in comparison to Substance..... but..... If you did want to have a go, the only way I know how to do it is as follows >> 1. Ensure your object has uvs 2. Assign a new lambert (you can switch after painting) 3. Change menu set to rendering, go to texturing and 3d paint tool. 4. Assign file texture on colour channel 5. Paint using black and white colours (you can browse to your own brushes if you have any or use Maya's collection) 6. Save scene (necessary so that Maya knows where to store texture) 7. Hit save textures button 8. Open Hypershade window and find the file node created, take output and use as you wish. Hope that helps.... Give it a go and holla back if you need me to create a video tutorial going through the process.

    hi .I have a problem .when I import my shot with animation in it .when I open the sequencer and scrub the timeline and play the animation.my ue5 crashes every time .its not the case in ue4 .it just crashes on ue 5 .did you test to import animation before?

      No problem FISHY BILLA, you can transport animation data with USD yes.. What sort of animations are you looking to export?? If it’s character animation I’d highly recommend checking out the new Live Link plugin. You will need to download and install for both Maya and Unreal but it’s totally worth it.

    Great stuff. I just wonder whats the advantage of using layer shader over using mix shader with alpha mask. Except for not having to build bigger tree. Can we for example change the order of the layers after shader is created?

      Hey Nezumi, thanks for watching the video. Being able to layer up more than 2 shaders is a real advantage for us. It is super easy to switch the order of layers if you use the show all attributes option when right clicking on the shader itself. You can then switch connections by swapping the tethers. This way we can also access many more attributes than we see in the attribute editor. Being able to name the layers too helps with not losing the plot when you have large networks. :)

    Great tutorial. One item you may wish to emphasize is where to create the original mesh. On my Mac with Maya 2022 I am only able to distribute a mesh along a curve if I create the mesh at 0, 0, 0; otherwise even if I freeze transformations prior to creating the MASH waiter, the instances and/or meshes are offset.
