Brook Green Suite (Gustav Holst arr. Duguid)
Available to purchase and download here:-
Discover a new arrangement of Gustav Holst’s Brook Green Suite, now adapted for Brass Band. Originally composed in 1933 for the junior orchestra at St. Paul’s Girls School, Holst wrote this suite with the goal of providing his students with a piece that was both challenging and rewarding, while being accessible enough for young musicians. Despite ongoing health issues at the time, Holst managed to complete the suite and personally oversee its first informal performance in early 1934, just months before his passing.
This three-movement suite-Prelude, Air, and Dance-is filled with the graceful lyricism and rhythmic energy characteristic of Holst’s later works. The Dance movement, in particular, features a lively tune that Holst recalled hearing at a puppet show during a holiday in Sicily, adding a personal touch to this cheerful finale.

This setting of the melody to the hymn 'Love Divine, all loves excelling' explores the harmony and motivic ideas through a series of moods. Originally written as a trumpet quartet for the 'Bella Tromba' ensemble, this orchestration for brass band explores the range of colour available from a larger group. its not as good as I thought it was alan
This was part of the best concert I have seen in about 12 years of going to the Abbey Gardens on a summer Wednesday lunchtime.
It was all great - the solo cornet player was terrific! Small boy in green-striped top was good value too! And all in lovely sunshine under large shady trees, with gentle breeze . . .with perfect garden setting. Lucky Londoners!
Have a great summer and thank you for being a great mentor 🎻
