How about a 3 loop true bypass with led pedal switches with a different color for each of the 3 loops and a basic power LED so you know it's getting juice ???
Thanks for the helpful electronics information, however, I fail to see the point of this device. If you just want to control the volume by hand, most guitars already have volume (and tone) controls built into them. The point of a "pedal" is that the device is controlled by your feet, leaving your hands free to play your instrument.
I was originaly planing an entire series of how to build effect pedals, but then life happened. I wanted to introduce one component and concept per video, while building a pedal that is functionalaon its own. This video was ment to introduce the general idea of potentiometers and voltage dividers.
Please make more vids. They're very good.
I just came across your videos...very entertaining. Can you make a video on a multi loop switcher. I have tried to build one with no success. I need five loops with master bypass switch. .Regards and keep your videos coming.

excellent video, is a way to kill the hum ? because no mather what pot i put, the pedal add hum to the signal, for example if ive the pot to the top value the hum is low, but if i change the por value to less the hum is really bad

I just have finished an extremely simple passive pedal. I have added this led circuit to it. Everything works, except when the led is powered and i engage the pedal, i experience extra hiss. Are there any options for filtering this unwanted added noise generated by the led circuit?

Good afternoon. I love your videos, and made a dual looping pedal based on your effects looper pedal which works extremely well. A question for you around potentiometers. I am making a passive receiver for an in-ear-monitor setup, where the receiver will receiver the input of vocals only from a mixer (via a wireless guitar 6.5mm transmitter/reciever) and go through a potentiometer before into the in-ear earphones. What impedance should i use, noting the whole point of this is to allow me to hear the pitch in my singing when im playing and i dont want the potentiometer to darken the sound or potentially misconstrue my singing pitch. Your advice is appreciated, i hope you have a video coming out soon! Thanks
I need this with all xlr jacks. I play harmonica and want to use a tc helicon vocal fx pedal to play distorted harp for one song with my band. I want to be able to bypass the tc helicon 95% of the time. I haven’t been able to find such a pedal.🤷♂️
I'm not quite sure about this: As XLR has two hot signals you need a 4PDT. Though you won't have an indicating LED. You would need to replicate the left and right terminals of the 3PDT twice on the 4PDT.
Mate I love your videos, you've got a subscriber for life here! A question here, I want to add a potentiometer to the main loop (not the FX loop), so that I can even the volume out for FX pedals that have tone suck and are quieter when you activate them (I have a modulation pedal that especially on clean is noticeably quieter when you activate it). That way when the FX loop is off, the volume is turned down a bit by the potentiometer, but when you activate the FX loop, it bypasses the potentiometer and the sound with it on (provided you've tested the settings) should theoretically be able to be matched, and having a consistent volume. I'm struggling to see where to put it in the schematic as the non effects circuit is all within the 3PDT. many thanks
That should be doable :) There are at least two ways of going about it. The first is if you want a status LED. I'll explain using the layout diagram: disconnect the white wire from the switchs top right terminal and run it instead into an outer terminal of a potentiometer. Connect the middle terminal of the pot back to the top right terminal of the switch. The third terminal of the pot should be connected to ground. This should work, but leaves the input with a lowered impedance since the pot is always connected to it and ground. I'd try using a pot with higher resistance than usual to mitigate. If you don't want a status LED you can use the free middle terminals as a switch and avoid the impedance issue. Run the white wire from the top right terminal to the mid terminal. Run a lead from the top mid terminal to the pot. Wire up the rest as explained above.

Just subscribed Could you build _a pedal that can _*_cancel Mono_*_ signal and _*_leave Stereo_*_ signal in?_ I'm pretty sure it is possible to come up with a switches-based solution. I'm not looking for a -stereo to mono converter- but for a kind of "vocal remover", allthough I guess it wouldn't be 100% efficient. At least there's a challenge😄
Hey, thank you. I'm not entirely sure I understand your question. Could you describe what signals are on the left and right channel, please? Which ones you want to keep and which to remove? This might be either very simple, or nigh on impossible with analog circuits.
@@fxinthemaking6511 Well I've seen one a long time ago but couldn't write down the design to rebuild it... Let's say you have a song with lyrics. Well, vocals should be mainly centered, *same signal on L & R channels.* _(So would be kick, and bass too, I guess.)_ So, if we can get a way to route *what's only on L and only on R* to an output, and cancel *what's on both channels,* we'll get an instrumental track out of a song with vocals. Maybe phase should be inverted on one channel and summed with the other one, so it cancels the signal? Everything mono would proobably end up canceled actually. I'll work on that this weekend 🤗
Ah ok, phase inverting one channel and then combining both sounds about right to me. Though in this day and age I'd try to find a digital solution. Any DIYable analog cicuit would probably work less well.
@@fxinthemaking6511 I guess. It's more for the challenge, and the fun of it. Also, It could be interestind for sound experiment, to add atttenuators (potentiometer or else) on the channels, to sclup sound, but It would turn into a bigger project. Maybe I'll finish my DIY drone synth first 🤔
Friend, do I need a high pass filter capacitor to let highs to pass when the pedal is on to prevent it from darking the sound or not? Would you help me with it, please?
If you have the passive volume pedal directly after a (non active) guitar it could possibly slightly darken the sound. If you find that to be the case for you I'd suggest using a potentiometer with a higher resistance rating.
I made one and it’s perfect. I’m making a second and want both battery and plug power sources options. Is that as simple as I think it is?
Thank you Matt, that's awesome to hear! Using both a battery and plug power is totally doable. Though you want to make sure the battery is disconnected if no signal cables are plugged in and also disconnected if a power plug is inserted. Do the former by connecting the batteries ground to a stereo jacks ring lug. Now the battery is connected only if a mono plug is inserted. For the latter you can hook up the batteries positiv to the switched lug of the power socket, the one that's still unused. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

@@mattharmeson916 Apparently I made one of these years ago and forgot all about it, until I found it in my closet. I honestly can't remember exactly how I used it in my effects chain, but it has the effects loop, a 9V battery to light an LED for on/Off indication and some resistors and capacitors that I forget why I needed them. But it still works. I think I used it to send effects into an amp's effect loop and return from the amp's effects loop. Either way, it's a pretty easy build for those that want one and has many applications. Thanks for the reminder.

I’m assuming this same circuit can be applied to a expression pedal? For example, building it in a Wah pedal enclosure. Great video! The quality is impeccable… You really should keep uploading!
Yes, the electronics are absolutely the same. Though I think the potentiometers used in expression pedals are mechanicaly slightly different as they have to be geared. Thanks for the encouragement. New videos are in the works!
I know it's probably not on your radar but might be a fun (or not) video to make is to show how to turn on LEDs through the guitar signal. More simply worded, how to make led's turn on as you play your guitar. Honestly I just need help with this subject because of a project I'm doing. Great videos so far though.

(not sure if you can still call it a true bypass after that)
Hi Andy, yes it is totally possible to put an effect into the bypass. Though you would need to adjust the schematic a little. I would build a pedal that switches between two different loops. I'd put the input and output each onto one common terminal. The send and return of the first loop onto the upper terminals and the send and return onto the lower terminals. The downside would be, that both your effect loops could pick up stray signals (think of the cables as radio antennas) and might pop more when turned of and on. Thanks for your encouragement!
