This helmet has quite a story, it was made by A. J. Morse & Son around the the turn of the century and started out its life as a US Navy Mark I, a 5 bolt helmet. I was able to step back in time and dive with some gear that's well over a hundred years old. We went up to do some fossil hunting and diving in the pristine waters of Peace River, which had risen 10 feet above normal, bringing with us a DIVINHOOD STYLE 2 made by the MILLER-DUNN CO. in Miami, Florida in the 20's. For my first official video here on youtube, we finally made it out to Blue Heron Bridge for a quick dive using The Hammond, a solid brass helmet that was produced in very limited numbers. Hopefully we'll be back there soon enough for another video with another helmet, and fingers crossed for some clearer water! And I wanted to give a BIG thank you to everyone that helped me finally get started...

where are good places to get this type of equipment? finding it is seemingly quite hard
There are still a few companies in the US that manufacture it (DESCO & Schrader) to the original standard. If you are looking for something old, I'd recommend a few dive helmet related Facebook groups, or there's a helmet auction at least once a year (Nation's Attic). Sometimes you can get lucky at antique shops and swap meets

How did you get the correct measurements to make this helmet??

I've dove a Russian dress and I understand why that would've been needed. The rubber on American dresses don't sit up high on the neck, unlike a Russian dress
What happens if water gets in your eyes
I've been a diver for over 40 years, logged over 1500 dives and would be terrified of getting into that thing. Where's my bailout bottle, my emergency ascent method, my backup plan? oh wait, you got nothing. What's your backup plan? Prayer!!
I had the opportunity to do that when I was a new diver in Pt Pleasant NJ by the Manasquan RR bridge . I was scared . Rickety old air compressor. Guy about 60+ years old donned it and had a hell of a time walking through the muck and mud into the river.

It's not supposed to, but this was a test dive for the gear. The leather gaskets were old and needed to be soaked. I do like the Russian equipment we have in the shop, although a 3 bolt suit is a pain to get into lol
See the videos from Mythbusters where they purposely cause a catastrophic failure of the pressurized air in the suit. The victim was an actual human skelton,, over which they wrapped and stitched together a human form out of pig flesh, with a "stomach" with "contents". The suited victim was lowered to depth in a sharkcage, with several video cameras on him/it. The airline was compromised, and the cameras captured the suit constricting, with the simulated red liquid filled stomach pushed into the helmet. Commentors noted that they heard the skeltons bones breaking, but I think that this detail was later edited out. It was gory enough! Must watch.
those suits are so cool normally they just sit hung on the wall or on a dummy but to use it wow so cool even with its drawbacks and better gear available. they just have a cool factor like old steam trains.
Exactly! It's a shame this equipment is sometimes left to rot and will never touch water again. I love being able to use this gear and keeping its history alive!

I the 70s my fish tank had one of those divers in it
I have a Jack brown, and two Chinese hats, old style lead belt, brass shoes, brass cased knife and two brand new suits, but I dive my superlite 17, k or my Miller 400 all the time.

my dad volunteered for Navy underwater demolition teams. Navy buried dad alive on bottom (bottom wouldn't support his weight with this dive suit), radioed down too him saying, this is a test of stress, get yourself out or die!
How do you manage to equalise your ears wearing the helmet?
When I dove a Mark V, there was a place inside the helmet, front right, just below the window, where you could mash your upper lip against your nose to seal it so you could force air to your ears.

Absolutely wicked did you have to replace any gaskets/seals or the cloth part? I’ve been wanting to get my hands on some of this equipment for awhile just BC i find it cool and want to see how it works
Luckily I didn't have to replace anything, just had to soak the leather real good! It's a really neat experience diving with these old rigs and I love the history that goes along with them
Did you also dive the small bonnet McCray version of the helmet?
I've dove with a Morse McCray style helmet in the past, I haven't gotten around to make a video with it yet, but it's in the lineup!
