Just pull one end and it comes through. I think there’s normally a sling with a maillon at the top. So you put the rope through there to the middle and chuck both the ends down. It’s not tied to anything 👍😁

From Sligachan take a path over a few rivers and then follow a path up the left side of Bhasteir gorge. When you reach the coire you break left and the scrambling begins

It’s when a climbing team trails a rope between them without placing any protection. If one falls it’s likely the other will get pulled off and cheesewire anyone caught below them. It’s an amalgamation of short roping and moving together but without the benefits of either

I think people feel safer because there is a rope. Unless there’s terrain or gear between you and your partner then the rope isn’t doing much. Short roping would be the technique where an experienced person has the less experienced person on a short leash to quickly stop a slip becoming a fall. If both are inexperienced then it’s probably safer to pitch the route and place gear. If both are comfortable and can self arrest then they may as well solo it. If someone did slip and start to fall it’s unlikely if you were at the top and you got yanked back unexpectedly that you’d be able to arrest, and if the person above slipped and fell past you before arresting then they’ll probably have too much momentum for you to be able to brace. In both instances you’re just putting your partner at risk by being tied together. That’s my two cents anyway!

I used Mapy.cz to navigate. The gpx can be found online by searching “heights of Alay”. I can’t say how hard it would be for you. What else have you done that’s similar? To be self supported and solo it is quite a large undertaking as there are few places to resupply. I would say this is quite a hard trek, one of the hardest I’ve undertaken. The altitude makes it very challenging as you go up to 4,100m and there isn’t always an obvious trail to follow.

If you’re going from Kinloch towards Dibdil I think the hardest bit is the north ridge to Askival. The easier route skirts left of the ridge. It is grade one scrambling over steep grass and rocky steps, there is a faint path but it comes and goes and looks like several routes are possible. If your dog has done other scrambles before and is sure footed you should manage. Everything else can just be a walk. Just realised I’ve watched your Bidean nam Bian video before! The only climbing is a friendly dif chimney at the end and a small section of mod down climbing off the imposter. You can pick your difficulty on the main traverse but it’s all scrambling and there are several exits other than the diff chimney, the mod ramp left after the 5m wall or dogleg gully at grade 1 or 2 down right from the putting green. I think I wore La sportiva tx4 approach shoes that day but I also like the TX5s for scrambling. Alistair was wearing the TX guide. It’s one of my favourite days out you should definitely bump it up the list!
