🌸 Save Your Petunias Before Winter! 🌸 Over Wintering Annual Flowers
The cold weather is rolling in fast, and it’s time to protect those beautiful petunias from being wiped out by Jack Frost! In today’s video, I’ll show you step-by-step how to dig up your petunias from garden beds and pots and prepare them for overwintering in a heated greenhouse-or even on a sunny windowsill if you don’t have a greenhouse! 🌱❄️
🌿 I’ll walk you through the process of digging up petunias, trimming them back, and repotting them for winter. You’ll learn how to use slow-release fertilizer and the benefits of ProMix HP with Mycorrhiza, which boosts root health and nutrient absorption. Plus, I’ll show you how easy it is to take cuttings for propagating even more petunias for next spring! 🌱💐
💡 Whether you’re trying to save money on your garden next season or just want to keep your favorite plants alive during the cold months, this method will help you keep your garden blooming year after year. 🌷

ProMix HP with Biofungicide is an excellent choice for overwintering plants in a greenhouse due to its combination of high porosity and beneficial biofungicide. The high porosity (HP) in this mix improves aeration and drainage, which is crucial for reducing the risk of root rot and other fungal diseases, especially in a greenhouse environment where humidity can be high. The biofungicide component (Bacillus pumilus) helps protect plant roots by colonizing them and outcompeting harmful pathogens like Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Fusarium. This creates a healthier root zone, allowing overwintering plants to establish stronger root systems.
The use of ProMix HP with biofungicide also helps deter some soil-borne diseases that might otherwise thrive in a greenhouse's humid conditions, particularly fungal pathogens that attack weakened plants. While it primarily combats fungal pathogens, it doesn't specifically target common greenhouse pests like spider mites, fungus gnats, or scale insects. However, by promoting healthier, disease-resistant plants, it indirectly helps them become more resilient against pest pressures. Combined with good greenhouse hygiene and pest control methods, ProMix HP with biofungicide provides a strong foundation for overwintering success.

    Hi Neighbor...I live on the South Shore of Long Island in Suffolk. I'm debating between the 2. I mostly need something for seed starting until they can go in the ground and house my supplies. I'm trying to get the seed starting out of my spare bedroom. Do you think the hoop house would work for that?

    • @uptosomething6271
      @uptosomething6271 19 годин тому

      Hi Sherry, Thanks for reaching out! It’s great to connect with a fellow Long Islander! For seed starting, a hoop house can definitely work, especially if you’re looking to keep things out of your spare bedroom. I’ve found that the hoop house provides good protection and helps maintain a stable environment for seedlings. You may want to consider adding a small space heater or heating mats if temperatures drop, as our winters can be a bit challenging for young plants. The hoop house would also give you plenty of room for storage and keep your gardening supplies organized and close by. If you plan on starting seeds early in the season, just a bit of extra warmth could be enough to make it work well. It is a great idea to start your perennial seeds that need cold stratification first, then the more tender plants as temperatures start to warm.

    I like the video and really want the greenhouse, but Costco UK sells only Metal frame houses. I had a greenhouse made of the same type of plastic sheet and a few years the plastic degraded and the tiny little "windows" fell out over a few weeks, like plastic snow. Be careful, its impossible to clean up completely.

    im looking for a way to keep my plants alive during the winters in Texas. Last yr I put my aloe vera in boxes closed up on my porch & they dies but came back fast in spring. w/o trying to save them, they dont come back, same for my geraniums. Ive lost so many plants bc of winter, I just need a place to put them in for winter then bring them out for spring. Another issue Im concerned about is spiders, centepedes & others in there, we have an unusual amount of bugs where I live (sorta close to a lake & lots of pine trees) causes a lot more really variety of bugs. Ive seen stick bugs so big it was weird, I say this bc if I house them I will do the (scream like a girl) dance & not want to go in there! I guess thats what the cedar smell is for-repelling them……still looking-boxes really did work but talk about ugly 😑

      I haven't tried, but I imagine since the branches are woodier you would be better off using a rooting hormone and sticking in soil. If you do them from hardwood cuttings you won't have to worry about humidity. I did root grape vines in just water but my success rate was lower than when I stuck them in soil. If you try it, let me know what happens!!

    What about Rose of Sharon: I have thousands of small plants popping up at the base of the grown trees. It's the 3rd time this Summer that I go on my knees and pull up the seedlings which must be pulled when they are very small 6" or the roots going down straight begin to break as they are being pulled. Better to pull after a heavy rain or deep watering. Beautiful flowers though ! It is manageable if we trim the tree before the seed pods become ripe.

    I bought one of these plants a few years ago and didn’t really have a place to plant it and so I planted it at the side of my house in relatively mostly shade! 3 years later and this year in particular I’m shocked at its size and the amount of heads on it! There’s probably more than 70 plus but I’ve noticed that the heads seem a bit smaller because there are so many! Should I trim the back or just cut off a bunch to bring indoors for the living room? Again I never had any expectations for this plant and now it’s an absolute monstrosity!

      That is awesome!! You can definitely take some blooms inside. The plant should have time to continue growing and set new blooms for next year. Once the plant dies back in the fall, you can also remove any dead wood from the middle which will make more room for the live branches next year. You can also remove any weak or spindly branches to allow more room for the strongest branches.

    Great video, thank you! I've subscribed and I'm looking forward to checking out your channel. Do you mind sharing your wholesale source? Is it easy to buy from wholesalers? (I understand they usually require a minimum order, I don't mind) I'm usually very patient with the few annuals I plant and I don't mind them taking their time to fill in, but next year I'm hosting some events in early summer and I want the garden to look lush! I will definitely try your overwintering method. Plus I'd like to get LOTS more annuals and I'd rather grow them on in the winter than spend a thousand dollars in the spring 🙂

      Hi! For Sunpatiens I use North Carolina Farms. They do have minimums and there are charges for boxing and shipping. If you are not buying a lot of plants, it ends up not being worth it. If you are buying a ton of plants, they are great. They also have sales sometimes! I want to try getting my wholesale plugs earlier next year and then growing them under grow lights until the last frost so they will be bigger when I plant them out. That may be a strategy for you too, before your event! Thanks so much for watching!
