IFR Flight to Westchester County Airport and Expect Vectors or Full Approach?
#IFR #Approach #Cirrus
I took Brane up in the Cirrus since he's never flown in one before. We flew to Sky Acres Airport for breakfast before heading back to White Plains. Our plans for an VFR trip were not meant to be and I filed both ways but turned on the cameras for just the return flight.
On the way into Westchester I was told to expect vectors for the GPS but ultimately put back on the full approach. Is there a defined rule for controllers against doing that?
Check it all out in this video and if you know the answer to my questions please let me know in the comments below.

How I preflight a CIRRUS SR20 G6
Переглядів 17 тис.3 роки тому
#Cirrus #SR20 #PreflightThis is how I preflight the SR20 before heading out for what I thought would be a quick VFR flight. Not all checks and other actions were filmed. A checklist was also used although it was not highlighted in this video. Please do not substitute any actions in this video for a thorough preflight check of your Cirrus or any other aircraft. Consult your Pilot's Operating Han...
How I use FOREFLIGHT PERFORMANCE PLUS Features for Flight Planning

#ForeFlight #PerformancePlus #FlightPlanning In this video I recreate a recent flight plan to demonstrate some of the features included in ForeFlight's Performance Plus level of service. While I don't touch on everything available in the app (that would be too long of a video), I do highlight airplane performance calculations, takeoff and landing distance calculations and runway analysis, 3D vi...
NIAGARA FALLS Flyover at night in a Cirrus!

After spending the afternoon on the ground at Niagara Falls I hopped in the plane and flew over at night before departing east back to Binghamton and Westchester. No ATC audio for this one but the 360º camera was working this time!
Flying to Niagara Falls Airport in a Cirrus SR20 G6!

Practicing Night Landings in the Cirrus
Переглядів 2283 роки тому
Night landings and VFR time at night are part of the requirements for the CPL. What better way is there to check off some boxes while working on both night currency and proficiency than to do some pattern work? It was also a good reason to return to where I started my training - Long Island's Republic Airport (KFRG)! These are just a few of the landings I did while at KFRG and before returning ...
YOU CONTROL THE VIEW!!! Virtual 360° Sky Tour Over NYC

Here is a different take on my recent flight over NYC. Pan using the controls on the top left (or the WASD keys) or move your smartphone or VR headset around (finger pinch and squeeze works too). Please leave a like and comment if you enjoyed this and I'll try to include more of these "add-on" type of videos.
FLYING OVER NYC in a Cirrus!

A perfect day for the Skyline/Hudson and East River flying tour over and around #Manhattan - including the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and more! Unfortunately and unknowingly, my cockpit audio was not recorded so ATC communications were pulled from the LiveATC.net archives. I omitted most of the ATC chatter not relevant to this flight. Thanks for watching and be sure to share, like, subscr...
Cirrus SR20 Approach and Landing in White Plains, New York

Autumn in New England is beautiful. It’s especially beautiful from the air! This is the second half of my trip, this time flying from Keene, NH back to White Plains, NY while soaking in some autumnal colors, listening to ATC chatter, and experiencing 360° views from the right seat of the Cirrus SR20. Be sure to check out the first video of my IFR departure out of White Plains. ua-cam.com/video/...

Flying up the Hudson River in a Cessna 172 (NYC)

Early morning, early winter flight up the Hudson River SFRA (Special Flight Rules Area) with views of New York City. This was so early, and so cold that I had the corridor all to myself! No ATC audio here just the roar of the Lycoming engine.

C172 APPROACH AND LANDING into Farmingdale, NY (KFRG) w/ ATC Audio

I came across this while going through my SD cards and decided to add it as a first video. I flew to Block Island for breakfast and this is the approach back into Republic Airport’s runway 19. Since the making of this video, I’ve obtained my instrument rating and added a couple of additional cameras. Also, I’m now flying a Cirrus out of Westchester Airport. Off of the centerline a bit and I flu...
I want to do this really badly. I live in Alabama and will be taking my private check ride soon. Im already trying to figure out the best way...either take one of ours "rental" up there or rent one there and fly the river. Im sure there is more to it.
Is this SR20 your aircraft? Great videos by the way. I love aviation
I needed to refresh myself and that was a GREAT overview! Thanks for taking the time - very helpful! Even us 11k+ hours pilot keep learning.
Just watched your video for the first time and heard my call to tower at the hold short line. I flew N744JN out of FRG for 7 years until we recently sold her. Great video!
What date was this flight?
That’s clever tip but isn’t white light not advised at night because it affect your eyes and usually use red instead?
We’ll done!
Good video. But when there is a lot of complex radio chatter, you could do without the music playing over the video. It makes it hard for us to hear what’s going on.
Great video! Would have liked to have seen you top up the oil as you mentioned. I’m sure you did it, it just wasn’t on video.
Nice to see the hammer is secure. Never can tell when you're gonna need to fix something.
20:20 My old hometown of Port Chester, NY.
What do you recommend for instrument and commercial rating?
Appreciate your review on this. Shame they raised all their prices but when something is popular, I knew it was coming.
Nice video man! greetings from Chile! keep going suscribed!
I never do VTF for exactly this reason. If I happen to be given VTF, I simply fly the assigned heading and activate the leg. Works beautifully every time, and I don't have to scramble at the last minute when ATC's plan changes due to traffic and workload, etc.
Nice flight! In my old neighborhood (NYC tri-state). Seems you have the same issues w/GoPro as I did, I got rid of it. Not sure if the new ones have gotten any better.
Nice flight! Very cool destination in an SR! Nice videos, keep it up :) safe flying
Great channel. Beautiful airplane!
I start in the cirrus this weekend and found this so helpful!!! Thank you!!!
I'm happy to hear that it helped! You're gonna love the Cirrus - such a wonderful plane to fly.
Cool video man. I'm currently in the process of getting my private pilots license, and I love it. One cross country that I've always thought would be cool is to Niagara Falls. I wanted to see if I could find anything on UA-cam and your video did not dissapoint!
Great to hear and I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful!
You know they have rules regarding how close in the can vector you onto the approach (and at what intercept angle) but I don’t think they have restrictions on how far out they can put you, as long as it’s onto a published segment. They get you in close for their convenience, not really yours. There’s really no disadvantage to loading the whole thing, except maybe if you picked the wrong initial.
Great video ! Keep them coming
Step 1) Light money on fire Step 2) Fly Step 3) Pull parachute
Awesome thanks
CFB=Can’t Find Binghamton.
Never checked landing light?
I know, it seems like I skipped over that. Actually, with the G6, the landing light is in the wingtip along with the strobes and nav and I did check both sets of lights. Thanks for watching!
@@fartherfasterhigher6157 which is weird cause the SR22 G6 also has the cowling landing light…wonder why that isn’t consistent across the sr g6 line
That's a good point. There is a landing light in lower cowling but not on the 20s. Not sure why that is though.
This really thorough and good review.
Thanks so much!
That’s something that me and my flight instructor never do is check if lights are functional. Will definitely do that from now on.
Great video and great landing! Entertaining. But where's the CAPS cover?! Ha
Glad I came across your channel. Thanks for the content.
Glad you enjoy it!
@@fartherfasterhigher6157 totally 💯
I came upon your channel and love the content. Thank you for how thoroughly you explain your videos. Keep them coming. I own an SR 20 Gen 6. Great plane.
Awesome, thank you! And yes, it truly is a great plane.
nice ! i fly out kfrg in long island . hope we can Collab one day .
Sounds great! I started flying out of there when I did my training.
What subscription do you recommend for a private pilot?
For a private pilot w/o an instrument rating? I think the Basic plan is enough. The Pro Plus plan, at an extra $100/yr. does come with some nice additions that would especially benefit you with during flight planning and enroute (profile and hazard view, synthetic vision) I don't think it's necessary if you're just going to be doing some VFR flying. ForeFlight does offer a trial run - I think it's 30 days - if you've never used it before. Try it out and let me know what you think. Thanks for watching!
Funny you mention being given full approach, then VTF, then back to full approach? They discussed this very issue on the Podcast Opposing Bases. Enjoyed your video, and the format. Got a new subscriber!
Yes, I heard about that and listened to the podcast. Exactly what happened here. Thanks for watching and subscribing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I load from an initial fix , if I get vectors from Atc I don’t worry too much , once I hear the magic words “cleared for the approach “ I go activate vector to final and press approach mode ..
Yes, that's what I did this time around and it came back to bite me. It just taught me to *always* activate the specific leg and still use the approach mode.
Living the dream!!!
So the quart of oil it needed, was that because it burns oil? Or it leaked?
Yeah, just regular consumption. The plane is used a lot so it's fairly common to have to add a quart occasionally.
On another channel. The pilot was doing his pre-trip inspection. He found a bullet hole on the top of the airplane. Someone had shot a gun off into the air and the bullet came down and hit his airplane. It cost him a a couple thousand to fix the hole.
Yeah, Steve-o right? I saw that video. Thanks for watching!
Very good video! Well edited. I personally get a bit frustrated when controllers tell you to expect vectors and then you are told to go to a fix. Too much last minute fiddling. That said I really don’t see the value in selecting vectors to final. Why not just leave the full approach up, go into hdg mode, take the vectors and then go back to nav when you are cleared for the approach. This way you have the best of both worlds. Interested on what you think I may be missing.
Thanks for the compliment! Honestly, I’ve never been consistent in terms of what I do at the moment. Sometimes I keep the full approach in and then activate approach mode and sometimes I’ll activate vectors to final though I’m breaking that habit and won’t be doing that anymore. I was really wondering if there was a specific rule against controllers doing that and have since learned that there isn’t. It seems to just be a thing that happens from time to time.
@@fartherfasterhigher6157 don’t want to beat this one to death but, I read a recent article on this exact scenario. The gist of it is just activate the leg between the IF and FAF and you won’t even need “activate” the approach. If you are interested you can read it here. www.google.com/amp/s/bruceair.wordpress.com/2010/11/24/avoiding-the-vectors-to-final-scramble/amp/. That said I just got my ppl last week so you can take all of my advice with a grain of salt 😂
Yeah, that’s what I meant before but I didn’t say activating a leg on the approach. You can do that if redirected back on the approach but if vectored to the final approach course, activating approach mode gives you vertical guidance which you wouldn’t get off just activating the leg in the FMS. Congrats and welcome to the club! Are you going for your instrument?
@@fartherfasterhigher6157 Thanks! Yes, I plan on it. Already passed the instrument written but I decided that I will take 1 month off and just enjoy my new ppl privileges for a bit :)
That’s good. Enjoy that new privilege before getting back to work on the next rating.
Very interesting!!
Very!
Thanks for spending the time to record that! Very informative
Glad it was helpful!
Big fan of the Cirrus SR20/SR22's!
You fly them too?
@@fartherfasterhigher6157 I'm not an owner, but a big fan of them!
Good info being reintroduced to fore flight
Glad you think so! And there's so much more that I didn't get to.
I learned a lot from this video! Thanks!!
Glad to hear it!
I really like this video, especially since I see Cirrus aircraft on the field all the time. I've definitely been curious about them, but I think I'm going to wait until I get my license before I dip my toe into that Cirrus life! ✈️✈️✈️
I would recommend that for sure. I did both my private and instrument training in the Skyhawk but after 155 hours in one, I was burnt out on it. I knew that for time building, I wanted something with a little more push so I stepped up to the Cirrus and I have no regrets! The SR22 is the real deal but if you're doing short hops or staying locally, the SR20 is fine. Looking forward to seeing your video where you announce that you passed the checkride and you are certified to fly the friendly skies!
@@fartherfasterhigher6157 Thanks fam for the advice! I'm on my grind!
Got a few good tips. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Really cool man. I think this is some really good 360 camera work. Gorpro MAX or Insta360?
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was the MAX and it was my first time using it.
Didn't realize how much went into planning a flight ✈️. Cool application
Oh yeah, and this is only a taste. It was not that long ago that this stuff was done using paper charts and a pen!
Great video and really cool use of the 360 for the cinematic gimbaled camera look. Really enjoy the channel. Has me remembering going in and out of HPN when I got my private at BDR. Starting to look around for a school to check out the SR20/22 to try out. Keep up the great work.
Awesome, thank you! I've flown into BDR quite a few time while practicing approaches. Where are you based and what do you fly now?
@@fartherfasterhigher6157 I've been out of it for about 20 years. All the great content like yours has me thinking about getting back in. But at BDR, and this was in the early 90s, there used to be a great flying club on the field. They had a bunch of Grumman Tigers and Cheetahs and handful of Money M20's. Definitely old school in a lot of ways (run by a WW2 vet with no end of stories), but very welcoming to a high school kid working on his private.
Beautiful skies. Great shots!
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I can’t speak for everyone else that watches but for me I enjoy learning more about the SR 20 how do you use it so I would prefer more about the procedures communication etc. rather than sightseeing. I don’t mind a little of it but the focus for me is still on the plane. Keep up the good work. Shane
I hear you! I already shot a video on my ForeFlight prep and that’s in the pipeline and I was planning a more bare bones video on the preflight and other checklist procedures for the SR20 on my next flight.
