The official UA-cam Channel for KI7WJP.
In the backcountry our radios are going to likely be used for emergency communications because (especially now) there are accidents and they're going to happen. Many of us spend a lot of time refining our radio skills for emcomm support in our community for disasters, events, and other emergencies. As hikers, backpackers, hunters, mountain bikers, etc, our community is often our fellow outdoors people. Emcomm could be needed for a personal or isolated disaster, a fall, an animal attack, who knows. And we should know enough to rely on whatever we have or whatever will work. Phones, radios, GPS communicators....
It's about staying in touch, communicating with family and friends who are sharing in the adventure, and maintaining a safe system of communication in the backcountry.
With the inherent dangers of crossing wide open spaces and mountains with little to no method of communication, I began the search for a way bridge the gap.

Welcome to Backcountry Amateur Radio. I was able to get out and participate in a quick demo with Kevin, K7SW and try to find him and two other stations in the 40 meter band using Near Vertical Incidence Skywave techniques. The Ionispheric conditions were awful, but not horrific. There were times that communications worked out. Who wants to see more on this? If you're not currently subscribed, p...

As,and " old timer " new to sdr getting outside is always good thank you for this video!
Keep the FT890 and turn the output down to 5w. Duh!
Is the GMRS channel preloaded to this radio?
Retevis ra 25 is the exact same radio. I bought one and love it.
Umm....where's the content?
Ahhh long press 😃
oh yes, no button can have a single function!
not sure why UA-cam decided to make this 4 minute video a 10 minute video. There's apparenly 6 minutes of endscreen. Sorry guys. You don't need to watch my endscreen for 6 minutes unless you really want to help the channel out.
Letting the video run while I fix a cup of tea. Anything to help the cause! 😂
Hopefully you can post a wattage test. Thanks
Thanks, yep, that’s coming. I actually. Lew the finals on the first one testing 40W. It’s asked for 9 amps at 40. And apparently something went wrong. Got a replacement so test results are coming.
What kind of drones do you fly?
yea man Looking forward to your follow up videos.
Coming soon! working on output and range testing. Thanks for checking it out.
Nice video - very helpful and informative, so thanks! Just curious if you have the tuner somehow attached to the rig or side rail arrangement that you have there? I'm looking for clever ways to make up a nice POTA go-box with that combination.
Thanks for commenting and checking out this video. The tuner should have come with replacement feet for the 891 that allows you to mount the 891 to the top of the tuner via 4 matching slots. The rails for protecting the face of the radio are aftermarket things I got from ebay, something like this: www.ebay.com/itm/226006335178
Thank you for great video, how can you upgrade firmware on this beautiful radio?
Looking forward to your follow up videos. My DB-20 has always served me well as a mobile radio, but a bit more power would nice for a base station.
Thanks Clyde. Just did a little testing yesterday for power requirements. The DB40 has significantly more draw than the DB20. The rig is very simple. And I'm working on clarifying some of the instructional ambiguity from the manual. The manual for this is by far one of the worst manuals I've seen.
is that yaesu ft 817?
yes.
Thanks for the review. Can you tell me how many amps does this radio require from a power supply ? Thanks.
low power requires about 2A and High is 4A, according to my gauges on the Astron PSU. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@backcountryamateurradioThanks
bonjour, quelle antenne utilisez vous ? est ce que ça peut fonctionner sur une 5/8 ?
bonjour, j'utilize EFHW ou resonnante 1/2 onde exclusivement. Desole de n'avoir pas experience sur une 5/8.
@@backcountryamateurradio merci
I just bought a FT-891 and the FC-50 thanks for the info. I had an FT1000mp in the garage but its not always heated well and I was worried about leaving the radio there. I think the ft891 will be better. I purchased an ALINCO DM-330MV to power it.
I hope you're enjoying your new setup. It's an extremely powerful rig.
@@backcountryamateurradio It is a very nice rig, I am very happy with it so far. I made around 1200 contacts in the last 4 weeks on 40 and 20.
Spanish Fork to Heber? that ain't ground wave. I recall a few mountains in the way. Something about a Timp. Dropped my antenna to 1-8 feet and still hitting most of the continent on 40/80
Thank you for the tutorial. My mic jack wasnt making proper contact on FT-65, and unfortinately the metal flap that needed to be adjusted was way inside of the jack and no amount of prodding would bend it into shape. I ended up putting a tiny solder blob on the tip of the male mic jack which fixed my issue. The disassembly steps you showed were super helpful!
I’m glad you found some help thru this video. It’s odd that this is a continual problem. Thanks for sharing your experience!
You didn’t mention how to activate the tuner for receive. There is supposed to be a way to activate the tuner for receive rather than just transmit.
I wish I'd presented that before I sold it. Apparently the information on RX tuning for the FC-50 isn't widely available. If I can find the instruction sheet I'll post it here.
Nice radio Yaesu? I use the Elecraft KX2 Anyway 73 KK7GKG 147.12/147.18
Yep, a refurbished 817, so technically capable of 6W which I rarely use. The KX2 is an incredible radio. I wish there were more radios like it. 73 - KI7WJP
Can you hear old radio in space
Theres a possibility, but I have never looked into it. Space is full of radio noise, but I'd imagine some old radio signal bounced of some distant moon and it on its way back.
@@backcountryamateurradio thank you 😊 👍🏴👍
TidRadio TD-H3 Radios are good if you get a good one... I purchased two when they first were released. One is Useable the Other is not..I believe the design is there but their QC is not up to Good Quality Standards and it's a shame... Both radios have good power on both 2 meters and 70 cm... The trouble with the one radio is Border Line Spikes on both 2 meters and 70 cm, the other radio has nothing above 58db down on the both Bands... I tested the radio with a calibrated HP analyzer, Cables and dummy Load... It is a shame.. The one that is clean works Great and has great sensitivity and signal reports... If they could only get their QC Standards up! Thanks
Thank you for sharing your experiences with these radios. I think you’re right. When they’re on they’re on. But so many are off.
NVIS is a great and practical option. I wonder how the digital modes would work with NVIS in a high noise floor environment.
Thanks for your comment. I think that digital would do far better. I would like to try that in the field. My home station, when it was operable, had an S9+ noise floor but I was able to connect on platforms like FT8, JS8, and intermittently Winlink. Have you had much experience with that? 73 KI7WJP
@@backcountryamateurradio I have experience with digital modes except not in an NVIS config. My home QTH EFHW is set up in the trees, but in theory, it should work fine. I'm near Colorado Springs and would love to NVIS with you, although we may be too far for that. 73, N1ROG
_Nice_
Thanks!
Great data point and very relevant to my situation and location. Was just playing with NVIS in the Uintas last weekend. Video was well put together.
I love the Uintas! Were you able to make contact? Thanks for your feedback! I tried to collect some footage but didn't get too serious with it this time around. 73 - KI7WJP
@backcountryamateurradio yes. First night was noisy and rough to get out. Next day checked into a couple of Utah nets. Did call out randomly twice but nothing from those. Worked 20 and 40.
@@Cr0cket20 What a great experience! I'm actually headed there tonight. However, with it being ARRL Field Day I'm not going to mess around with HF. NVIS for the win though. Another time would be neat to connect with you. 73
greetings from AZ as well. Did an activation on strawberry mountain last year. That was a doozy . cheers kj7vcm
Man, I hope you at least used a motorcycle to get up there! That's a really isolated area. I am considering a winter activation there. Cheers! and thanks for stopping by the channel! 73 KI7WJP
Glad to see this video drop and it is good motivation for me. I’m right there with ya, haven’t hopped on HF in a while. I like working NVIS in the Smoky Mountains because it provides good coverage in the terrain. Certainly a better alternative than VHF/UHF though with trade offs. Always enjoy the videos you post! Keep it up! GF
Thanks for checking it out! I imagine that NVIS would work well out there. In our mountains, it's drastically more effective especially if you have a planned contact! Great tool for a backcountry comms guy! Thanks again for your comment! - 73 KI7WJP
DUDE!! This was really fun, thank you for being available and for making this video. I hope we can do this again over the summer. we were all using 1/2 wave endfeds this time. Really great to see you on this video. 73
Kevin, thanks for putting this exercise together. It was a super fun time. So we all had end-fed's? To be honest, I wasn't sure that mine was going to radiate enough power to work! Catch you next time! 73
Great to see a new video Eric. Even thought the bands were not cooperating super well, the fact is you were still able to connect with only 5 watts. That is always impressive. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you David! Also, thank you for being part of it. I'm still curious what I could have done to be heard better at your location. I couldn't believe how well I came through at the SDR site. I changed antenna height, direction, etc, but really no change in propagation. It was a super fun time though. Can't wait to do that again. 73
Love this feature. I bought another H3 just to do it lol. Another cool one is frequency scan function. Walk around in a department store, get their frequency. And get the inside scoop.
Very cool, it seems to be accurate. Have you had luck finding other signals to copy?
@@backcountryamateurradio at work yes been stealing the FRS radios and their PL tones.
Subscribed. As a cycling enthusiast and ham, I can tell that we are going to be friends. My bike channel is Ride Alongside. 73, KK6DKQ
Thanks! I find it really fun to incorporate radio and cycling. Hoping to do a bit more of it this year. 73 ki7wjp.
@@backcountryamateurradio that’s what got me and my wife interested in ham. We hit repeaters when I was out on long rides in long, narrow canyons where cell couldn’t reach. 73
What antenna are you running here?
I believe I was running a 41’ random wire (9:1) with a counterpoise. Feedpoint was about 15’ high.
OMG! You talked into it! I heard you cannot ever talk. So far this thing totally sucks
haha, yeah, turns out no one could ever hear me on that terrible radio. Should probably do a follow up, but life caught up with me and I haven't had the time.
I'm new to this so I have a question why are you saying wrfs 365 at the beginning of the transmission?
That is my GMRS call sign, and rather than doing anything else to test it, I just throw out my call sign while testing. Keeps it simple in the even that I don't make any more transmissions. I use the same approach with ham radio.
Good night ! 1:30 before anything starts 🙄
if you can't tell I'm kind of over radio reviews.
Should be receiving mine next week, hope it lives up to the hype. All HT’s share similar form factor and programming options, what attracted me is the type C flexibility and price as you pointed out. That and if licensed for both HAM and GMRS you have both in one radio.
I'm not sure if one unit can be used for both Ham & GMRS. Do you have any insight here? Also, I've had some issues gettint it to connect to my PC. But the Usb-C charging is a winner. Thanks for your comment.
@@backcountryamateurradio Yes, when “normal” is selected it becomes both HAM/GMRS. I downloaded the Tidradio programming software, it works with Baofeng cable but isn’t so great compared to Chirp. (I have an old PC Chirp Legacy doesn’t support and cannot run Chirp Next). Either in the backcountry or as I will use it with a volunteer fire department being able to charge with type C is a plus. I can see the H3 becoming my favorite except it lacks scanner groups like my Wouxun.
That type C for programming is game changing !
Recently got my gmrs ordered 2 of these haven’t gotten them yet! Also ordered a baofeng uv 5g plus
It will be interesting to see how you like them. I've thought about getting some of the GMRS models as well. I use it far more than Ham frequencies.
I just started in gmrs and got one of these and a uv5r (gmrs). It’s pretty nice compared to the baofeng. The only thing I don’t like is the clip in the battery
That's a great observation and thank you for sharing. I do think the keys are a little small but otherwise, that battery clip is just silly. I ran into the same problem with Radioddity's GM-30. Depending on the interface of the GMRS H3, I may replace all my GMRS radios with it.
@@backcountryamateurradio it’s not the size of the keys it’s how you use them right? lol I guess that doesn’t matter to me yet, I don’t have anything to compare them to except for the uv5r, and it seems waaay nicer than the uv5r to me. Is there any reason that the tdh3 (same antenna) would be cleaner and more consistent in what it picks up and plays over the speakers compared to the baofeng?
Got the H3 and fiddled with it for a day. $39 is cheap for this radio. Small keyboard and lousy owners manual made me send it back.
Can't blame you for any of that! Time will tell how it does for me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
It's a Baofang with a Radioddity label.
I ordered 2 of them, I can't stand the squelch tail after so.eo e transmits. I'll stick with my baofengs. I could care less about the other frequencies they have.
totally understandable.
Can't you turn the squelch tail off in the menu #30?
Great opening!
Thanks Clyde. The opening is where I'm headed with the channel. It was fun to put that introduce the review with it. Hope you're doing well. - KI7WJP
@@backcountryamateurradio I’m doing quite well. I finally upgraded from GMRS and got my tech ticket. I need to get my A99 up for 10 meters as soon as it warms up a bit.
Great to see you Eric. That is a simple little radio, I like the features that you have shown. I could see this radio replacing my older Beofang radios just on the ease of use alone.
It’s not a bad radio for replacing the other baofengs. I haven’t figure out the CPS yet. Hope you’ve been well!
Great video and thank you for being the only one on youtube talking about linked repeaters in this way. Maybe you can help me understand this a little better. A repeater near me is connected fulltime to the Montana Repeater Link Association and has this info on it as well: Commands: Link to the Intermountain Intertie: On 196 / Off 197. Automatic 10 minute disconnect. What does that mean..? I'm not sure what the 196/197 is for or how to use that to link to the intermountain intertie. In theory, this would give me amazing coverage if I can just figure out how to get it to work. Thanks again for your great video.
Hey! Thanks for checking this out. This video highlights that linked repeater system. If you open it up on your end, then we could probably chat. You may want to get with your local ham club to make sure you're doing it right, but to turn on that link you simply key in "196" while keying the PTT. But depending on the setup, there may or may not be an additional key in the procedure. So, I'd reach out the the local club and make sure you've nailed it. Thank you again. Hope you catch you on the intertie! - KI7WJP
Hey I use the 147.12 on Farnsworth in Utah I am a UtahVHFS member I know the codes for controlling from our intermountain intertie side. 197 OFF 196 ON when operating from the UtahVHFS side we have to put a prefix that gives us dial tone telling us that we are controlling that certain site I was up in Montana a couple days ago All you have to do is Key up and Dial 196 to turn the link on (it gives you a double beep telling you it connected successfully) then after 10 minutes or you dial 197 it will disconnect and give you another 2 beeps
@@kk7gkg Awesome, thank you! That's what I figured and I've tried it several times but I've never once gotten a response so I thought I might be doing something wrong.
I’ve got both. I had the 817ND first. It was my mobile radio for about 6 years. (REALLY don’t suggest QRP Mobile unless you’re incredibly patient but it did make me a better operator!) No regrets adding the 891 because I still operate 99% mobile so I also added an ATAS-120A for quick band changes plus the 891’s digital filters. I’m 74/100 towards Mobile DXCC, SSB, 5-50 watts. Anything above 50w, even mobile, is pointless. Have fun!! WB3CFN/m
When I try to go to vfo split on my FT65 it just beeps and won't let me do it. Any suggestions?
Hi there, great in depth video but I'm completely new to all this and just need to call in kms to a single vhf frequency. No idea what all the extra settings are lol. So basically just set up a frequency let's say 150.12 and then away i go? Hopefully it comes with decent instructions cuz i just need it for something very simple. Thanks!
well, i hope you find it simple. I think it has intuitive menus. But I've been working with a variety of radios for a few years now. I'm unsure if you'll see it the same way. Knowing what to look for is important. Like "shift" and "direction". These radios don't do it for you like a Yaesu does. But once you figure out the 2 or 3 additional steps, you'll probably be happy you got it.
You rock very simple easy to follow
When trying to set tones for a specific repeater on a specific channel, does that not change it for all the channels?
Maybe I have old firmware, but it should only change the tone/code for the channel you've selected, as it is programmed to function like a GMRS/FRS radio versus a ham radio where programming is initiated in VFO. Great question. Thank you.
