I usually go with normal to begin with to get the story and mechanics of a game and after that I do hardest diff, sometimes this is even required to get access to hardest diff!

I used to always just play on the normal difficulty, and i would always say "ill do another playthrough on a harder difficulty" But I very rarely actually play a game more than once, so one day I just decided to start games on the hardest difficulty from the start from there on out.

I need the challenge, aversion and high stakes to give a fuck about what Im playing. My only gripe with this is when the game isnt deep enough to warrant playing higher difficulties. If I go from Normal to Hard mode, sure, I expect enemies that are sturdier and hit harder, but if the core gameplay loop doesnt change from normal and Im not forced to try new tech to progress, its bad design

Had a similar experience as a kid, except I used cheat codes to beat games (the likes of Quake, Warcraft, Serious Sam etc), since I was shit at games, but reaching the ending just felt very underwhelming. I later realized why - because it wasn't challenging and I didn't feel like I accomplished something, so first I stopped using cheats, then started increasing difficulties and it kept going.
