Washington state is covered in deep evergreen forests and the vast majority of the population is concentrated in and around the cities. Getting lost in the woods here nearly always means getting lost in the wilderness. Even going 50 or 100 yards off trail (say, to try to find a dog who lit out after a deer or bear), it could be really easy to get lost. September is the time of year when bears are aggressive and hungry, the days are beginning to shorten significantly-especially in the mountains, and nights can be cold, wet and windy. The terrain is also prone to rock and mud slides, trees toppling in high winds, and marshy spots with deep clay mud. Once you're off the trails that are maintained by the park services, you are very unlikely to encounter other people. If he were injured from an accident or animal attack, dying of exposure would be a real risk. If he was woods-wise and managed to build even a rudimentary shelter around or instead of his tent, he would be incredibly difficult to spot in a search. The dog may have gotten lost, fallen victim to bobcat or coyote or bear, or been adopted by anyone who found it wandering on any nearby road it may have found its way to. People who live in the countryside would not necessarily report a found dog, since many people who live in towns and cities have a deplorable habit of relocating unwanted pets to the wild, assuming that they will be able to survive on their own.

I was on the Middle Fork Trail the same day he went missing. I have never seen so many SAR people in all my hiking experience. I have hiked Snow Lake Trail many times and Gem and Wildcat Lakes. I do have a few ideas... There's a faint trail from Snow Lake down to the Middle Fork Trail. It's actually the drainage of Snow Lake. I wonder if anyone checked that? Also there's an unmarked trail close to the Snow Lake trailhead. I will not include that info here on YT. But that trail goes by dried up waterfalls in summer/fall with lots of exposure. There's a lot of caves as well up there. Perhaps he took that trail? Much love to his friends and family.

Go to the east end of the road just before it gets back on the freeway and go right and follow it up around the corner to the high tension tower and park walk the access road under the lines west bound the dog was left up in there and there was lots of black bags full of stuff . Not sure if it's his dog but an area that needs to be looked at .

(Look up!) When I was 10 I was hiking on our family property with my 14 yo cousin. We were experienced with the outdoors already at that age, as we’d spent most of our lives outside. This was about 1987. Anyway, we were at the back fence line that abutted state land when we both smelled death and stopped. You can’t mistake the smell of a decaying animal after the first time you smell it, and by that age I’d happened across many dead animals. We looked all over and could not find the source. Then my cousin looked up. About 20’ up a tree, caught in a “Y” of branches, was a huge buck deer. We both knew it had to have been dragged there by a cougar, but I was astounded that such a big animal could be carried up there. We looked at each other and then we heard something…we bolted. I’ve never ran through the forest so fast. Didn’t stop until we made it to the house. Looking back, I doubt it was the cougar that we heard, but it still scared us. I often wonder how many missing hikers are up in trees.

My brother was "attacked" by a Black Bear where we lived about, eh... 45min Southwest of here- on the trails behind our house in King County- Ravesdale, WA. Yup, he was on a hike with our braindead black & yellow labs about a mile behind the house near the railroad tracks when he literally turned a corner in a particularly overgrown, brushy area & ran smack into an equally startled young (approx. 200lbs or less, barely 5' tall when it stood on its hind legs apparently?) black bear, who my brother said looked like a scared Yogi Bear as it bounced backwards off of him& took a tiny little "swipe/'Ahh i'm about to fall over backwards onto my butt, help meee?!' reach with 1 paw" out towarda my brother & managed to make about a 3.5" slice on his outer forearm... Before it did indeed, fall onto its butt, crawled up onto all fours, then scuttled off into the trees somewhere. (This was abour 10 years ago now? My older brother was probably about 25 at the time?) ...terrifying encounters with the WILDLIFE of Western Washington state right here, man!!?😮😱🌲🐻

I've hiked this trail several times. Well marked and highly visible with tons of people. Unfortunately this definitely seems like a case of wanting to end ones own life. It's actually more common than people realize for people to take their life in this way. Hike out into the wilderness and hopefully for them off into heaven. I hope he and the doggo are at peace. That said I've always felt even though it's common it's a real selfish thing to do. First of all it puts searchers at risk. Especially if it's cold or bad weather. It is also horrible for friends and family because they are left wondering what happened (as most family will always think "oh they would never do that" even though, yes, yes they would and did.) If youre going to do that..... first of all please don't, but if you do please leave a note. Thank you.

You have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT to say that a person who goes off to commit suicide it's selfish! A person who is suicidal is not in their right mind.. They feel But it's the only thing left for them to do to end the perceived suffering, whatever's troubling them.. I know about this first hand and I resent the fact that anyone, including you call someone out for being selfish! Have some compassion!!! Unless you've been there yourself you don't have any right to pontificate on what a person who's suicidal might be thinking or the actions they might take!!! 😡

Could be a high possibility. People take the forests in the pnw fore granted, way too many do not realize just how wild & dangerous they are. One wrong move and it is game over, you are completely lost, slip & fall into a canyon or off a cliff or possibly have a fatal encounter with a cougar or bear. Even if you expire by accident for various causes the animals will do what they do with your remains. As for his dog, a cougar would kill it & carry it off with little evidence. Personally, When I go hiking in the pnw, I always carry a compact 10mm handgun loaded with high powered hard cast bullets for bear & cougars.

The getting lost theory reminds me of the woman hiking the Appalachian trail. She stepped off the trail to use the bathroom and got turned around and couldn't find the trail again. There was a huge search and rescue and they didn't find her. She vanished. Months later someone came across her campsite, and her journal where she wrote her story, she starved to death. I think him getting lost and succumbing to the elements is a possibility.
