Flowing with the waves' energy in downwind
Переглядів 7 тис.10 місяців тому
Learn how to flow effortlessly from one wave to another. One of the biggest mistakes paddlers do in downwind is to try to outpace the rhythm of waves interacting with each other. It is much easier and more fun to flow in unison with the waves. Give it a try.
Getting used to the character of a Fenn Swordfish surfski
Переглядів 6 тис.11 місяців тому
I knew about the existence of Fenn Swordfish surfski for many years but never had the chance to try it. Recently I got one from my friend Roland from Fenn France and have had it for a couple of months now. I usually use stable surfskis for work and had to wait for our slow season to give it a try. Check it out and let me know what you think?

This is a video from two days paddling from Tarifa to Bolonia testing Nelo 540 surfski in beautiful downwind conditions. I wanted to find out how well it manoeuvres and how well I could keep it in control, stability etc. Check out the result.
DREAMY DOWNWIND FOILING IN TARIFA
Переглядів 494Рік тому
This is a downwind session starting from Tarifa to the dune of Punta Paloma. Half way through the conditions were so good that we decided to continue all the way to Bolonia. Ended up catching some of the best downwind waves of my life. Foiling helps tremendously to improve your surfski downwind especially when it comes to timing to jump from one wave to the next. Enjoy

This is awesome. The waves are so strong that you can still rotate the camera.
Thank you for the comment. Yes, the waves were pretty good that day !
Muy bueno
@@siempreafavor730 gracias !
Que velocidad vas ?
Gracias por la pregunta perp no se exactamente. Mas o menos 16-17 km por hora velocidade mediana
@boyanzlatarev más parece excelente muy bueno
Is there some hiden tecnique that i don't know to catch those waves so easily? And what are the materials that were used on that kayak?
Hi, thank you for the comment. I am not sure how to answer this about a hidden technique because I don’t know what techniques you know. The surfski is made of fiberglass and carbon as far as I know. It is Nelo 520 XXL
@boyanzlatarev i almost don't know any thing to catch good waves, and thanks for the information about the kayak. You should keep up with your videos. They are amazing!!
@ thank you. I appreciate it!
What are the Aries pointing at ?
Amazing. Which Epic Surfski are you riding? I''ve trying kakaks and surf skis lately in a club and the one I liked the most was a Marzu 55 from Elio, which is ~53 cm wide, beacuse of how stable it was.
@@Buran01 thanks for the comment. This is epic v8, it is 54 cm wide and 550 cm long
@@boyanzlatarev Thanx a lot, I've heard more than once that stability is the most crucial factor to newcomers as me since since allows a safer and more enjoyable experience, but I've seen a lot of tempting narrow surf skis around. Now that I've seen your videos in the south coast of my country I feel more encouraged to folloow my guts, purchase a astable, begginer friendly Marzu 55 or Nelo 520 and just focus in enjoying the proccess and developing skills instead of chasing speed!
@ thank you. I would say that for new to the sport or experienced paddlers, a stable surfski works great. Looking back at my own paddling, I started in year 2000 and it has been more than 24 years. By some standards I am probably an experienced paddler by now but I love paddling stable boats. It’s addictive to try and get fast speed from so called slow surfski. I enjoy it a lot!
You were really cruising on those swells for a long time! Amazing how efficient those skis are!

Do you do paddle camps for like a week or so as a package?
Hi, yes we do downwind camps and you could find more information at www.surfskicenter.com I hope the FAQ page could answer most of your questions and you could contact us via the page for any other information you would like.
Amazing This Ocean
@@reginaldojeri thank you
Any thoughts on the stability of the new 520s, vs the pre-2020 510s? I've been paddling surfski since February, have a 510, and I still feel like it's a handful in gusty conditions. The only thing I can really compare it to is a V8, and the V8 is definitely easier to manage in waves (unless of course you want to turn quickly). Anyway, there's a used gen 2 520 XXL for a good price about six hours from where I live (California distances...) and I'm wondering if it's worth the trip to test it out.
@@ExceptionallyCleverUsername thanks for the comment. I don’t have a comprehensive comparison between the two models 510 and 520 xxl. I can maybe do a test in the next day or two and write you back. From the experience I have had so far in those two models I can point to two main differences: 1. 520 xxl has significantly more volume and if you are on the heavier side 200 lbs plus (as I am) then you are likely to feel more stable in the 520 xxl. 2. The maneuverability of the 520 is superior due to the rudder shape and materials compared to the plastic 510 rudder and also the 520 seems to sit higher in the water allowing for better turning. The lighter weight is a benefit as well although there is an argument to be made that lighter weight would diminish stability when comparing two Surfskis of equal shape. More or less where are you situated in California? There maybe a closer place to test the 520
@@boyanzlatarev I'm in Fremont, close to the southeast end of San Francisco bay. I think the nearest actual Nelo dealer is up in Oregon.
Best video I've seen on this. Now to get a ski!
Wonderful
How do you like that Jantex for downwind? I’m on the fence about buying one. What size blade you using ?
@@chrisbeard9113 thanks for the question. I like Jantex and it works pretty well in downwind for me. I use Jantex Gama 640 cm^2 at 205 cm (it is adjustable between 20(1215 cm).
@@boyanzlatarev thank you, that helps me so much. I’ve been looking at 720cm to 740cm paddles but that’s probably more than I need outside of racing. you are amazing in the water.
@@chrisbeard9113 I think 720-740 is the size of paddle blades used by the top (fittest and strongest) paddlers in the world. If you put yourself in that bracket then it probably makes sense but if you are more like me - an average strength and fitness than I would strongly recommend 640-660 cm2
@@boyanzlatarev thank you, that helps a lot. Most people recommending paddles have suggested epic small or mid as being beginner small paddles, but they are 735 and 750 cm square, and that is big when you see when men and women sprinters are using, 740 to 800. I’ve only used flat paddles and plastic kayaks in ocean for years and recently learned about surfski, got a Nelo 510 on its way to me in Alaska. For the price of these paddles, I don’t want to spend money on one I am not fit to downwind with. I appreciate your advice, you’ve got some great skills and make it look effortless on the downwind
@@chrisbeard9113 Thanks! Wow Alaska, it sounds cold but also adventurous. It must be great for paddling! I strongly recommend a wing paddle and if you wet with Epic then it should be small mid wing, soft shaft (they are also less expensive) and maybe 205 - 215 cm length. Nelo has a plastic paddle a believe, which is priced economically but if you are serious about learning downwind then a carbon paddle is the best option for this.
Those sharp nelo bows look so fast from that camera angle! And the color is nice too. Great video!
@@zachhandler thanks Zach! Yea the boats look great !
Which model i need as Newbie for Pacific in Panama? V8?
V8 is good, Nelo 520, NK Club 540 and if you have to deal with rocks and difficult entry to the water then Nelo 510, Epic V7 or NK Breeze
Amazing.
Thank you !
So good!!! So much fun
Thank you !
🙏
Thank you for sharing your beautiful run. What ski did you use? Looks like an Epic V8.
Thank you! Yes, that’s an Epic v8
So much for "slow'. Luv it!
Slow can go pretty fast!
it looks dangerous, that's why its amazing. Did you reach the land? How do you go back?
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I reached the land and uploaded the video to UA-cam ;) I went back by car.
Wow, I've never seen the spray fly away so fast from the ski. 35 knots I'm guessing? Or more?
I am not sure exactly but some of the gusts were pretty fast.
Excellent video with some subtitles
Thank you !
is that dale ??
I am sorry, what is dale?
Don't get discouraged. Keep at it. You'll get this surfing thing down one of these days (sarcastic)!
hehe...true though, every day you learn something new about the downwind puzzle!
Great video! Is that Yusitron in the other boat? What a blast!
it was Eric from Sweden he is a zen master!
amazing. where was this?
It is in Tarifa, Spain
What speed is the “slow” ski going ?
It’s hard to tell as we had the current flowing with us. The top was about 26 kmh
🙏
Awsome
Thank you !
Boyan, are you going write anything on the Tarifa site regarding your latest experiences with the Swordfish ? Or have you done it already and I can't find the article...
I have been slow with this. I will write an article soon. Maybe a video would be better?
So beautiful! And peaceful! More of a meditation than a sport.
Very true! The ocean is such a beautiful experience.
What is your opnnion about short and long boats differences? Really we need a 6.40 boat?
Thank you for the comment. My opinion is that we don't need 6.4 m long boats. I love the way Nelo 520 surfs. I have used Epic V7 and that was also 520 and it felt great (minus the very heavy plastic material). I am sure there some advantages in longer boats in specific downwind racing conditions but for the average paddler like me, that theoretical advantage is irrelevant.
@@boyanzlatarev thank you !!!
Wow, it is really amazing !!! These are the best conditions for downwind, where is the place?
Thanks! This is Tarifa, Spain going downwind from Tarifa to Bolonia.
You look so relaxed, the movements are so smooth! Thanks for the great video! Can't wait to learn from you in Tarifa, maybe in 2025. Still an absolute beginner with surfskis.
Thank you @raju-bitter ! As a beginner I suggest you practice the stroke technique basics, brace technique and some remounting. Once you have base speed and some sprinting abilities you will be able to learn downwind. Playing in the surf zone catching waves is also an excellent practice. Go for smaller waves, you will still learn a ton
@@boyanzlatarev Thanks, will do that here in Copenhagen. I'm doing Oscar's stroke exercises, the bracing every 3rd stroke (which you mentioned in your PPP podcast interview). That was an excellent exercise in smaller waves. Here in Copenhagen the waves are smaller, so good for beginners. Really look forward to learning from you. Met some Danes here who went training with you. :)
@@raju-bitter Oscar’s drills are great. Keep at it and the results will come for sure
Nice!
Thanks!
Which one do you prefer, the V8 double or the Nelo 600?
For the moment I would say V8 double. I have to spend some more time in the 600 to learn more about how to get the most out of it.
Looks like paradise, do you get many sharks in that part of the world?
Thank you! I have been told there were sharks but I have never seen any. There are local Orca family and that maybe the reason sharks are not active around here
Absolutely awesome
Thank you
I guess you're in the latest Nelo shape with the unusual rocker line with a bulge downwards to lower your feet? Do you think that helps manoeuvrability? I had some time with a 520 XL
Yes, the shape of the hull is as you describe it. I am not sure exactly what element of the design deliver the manoeuvrability. It has to be a combination of the rocker, the length and the rudder shape and positioning. There are two main things, which make this surfski work in downwind: 1. The steering agility 2. The lift you get when you are positioned on top of the wave. I feel the lift underneath and the sensation is like riding a motor boat on a plane. The surfski feels very fast at that moment.
Maybe there's no life after death but this 4 minutes proves there's heaven on earth!
It definitely feels that way when you flow downwind. Thank you for the comment!
Will be checking the FB group(s) for your thoughts on the differences between the 540 and the 520 :))) Looks like a ton of fun! I must visit your school at some point, got some wave action last year when I took my Nelo 510 to Kavala Greece, but that is nothing compared to this. \m/ And the Danube where I do most of my paddling does not have enough depth to produce decent surfing waves even in strong winds :/ Cheers from Serbia!
Thank you for the comment! I am finishing a short article about the experience in 520. Actually I uploaded this video for the article! Greece has some amazing downwind conditions but I’m not sure if Kavala is one of the places. I have had some very great downwind near Athens. Danube can have good waves but the timing needs to be right and the wind to blown along the river. Shallow water doesn’t helps! Whenever you can make it to Tarifa I hope we would have some great conditions for you to enjoy!
Dream!🙌
Thank you! The conditions were very nice that day and the surfski made it easy to flow with the them.
Honestly one of the best all around surfskis ever.
It is a great surfski for downwind for sure
Dude amazing shot! I think you just introduced me to a new sport that should be damn amazing! But I can see how much of work I need to do to be able to ride like that.. Faboulos sportsman. Can I ask you what did you shot this on?
Thank you for the comment. It’s true that surfski requires some basic level before you could go out and do downwind like this. If you decide to go for it, be patient, the reward is worthy.
What’s up with the sky looking very man made
The camera films in 180 degree wide angle and then it exports the selected frame orientation with leveled horizon. In the process the sky gets this parallax effect, which makes it look a bit artificial.
