What an interesting take on hull covering. I have avoided but potentially when I am stateside I will change. Have a nice sail.
Thank you for an other great video. I am looking at getting a new boat and love the JPKs - fast and seaworthy. Was if you had look at fc45 before going for going for the fc39. Would love to hear your thoughts
@@robertdarcy5596 totally agree with your view of the JPKs. We’d originally wanted the 38fc but they’d just stopped production. The 39 is a pretty powerful cruiser, powered up to the JPK standard, but just handleable two up by us. Plenty of space above and below deck. Never sailed the 45 but it must be even more of a beast. Jean-Pierre Kelbert will manage that effortlessly on his own - but then he is JPK. And the setup and performance must be as steady as other JPK boats, so excellent in benign conditions for the average sailor. But not sure the average shorthanded cruiser would find it so comfortable to deal with the loads involved when things go awry.
@@PhiSailing thank you, for your insight, and agree. An other question, as you have raced you 39fc do you have or know where to find - handy cap ratings for the 39fc and or the 45fc
well done - I have to admire your perseverance. Having said that - with the quality of your result - its quite understandable why you have persisted.
@@yachticus thank you! 🤩 Yes it’s definitely been worthwhile. There seems a trend on new 39fc of not wrapping the hull or only a small decal. Not sure if that’s on advice from Atelier Sur Mer, who are now hesitant to do this, and who seem to do most of the JPK wrapping. With a bit of care and fuss it seems possible to have a full wrap even over the chine and enjoy a great result.
Wow, Photon Infinity looks absolutely stunning with that new wrap! Be sure to post some footage of your trip to the Azores.
Thank you so much @@albertofourie3294 😊 Yes pretty chuffed with the updated look. Arrived Horta yesterday with wrapper intact despite a pretty vigorous ‘go’ in the Atlantic washing machine with biggish seas on the nose for 24h. The sort of angle that took off the original wrap. Great work Decosail. We’ll start working on the Biscay crossing / Iberian journey next, then crossing to Azores and our time here. A few beers in Café Sport first…
Awesome, good to hear the wrapper held-up in the "test"! Q. How do you like the twin tillers as opposed to say, twin wheels? Any regrets?
Another great movie ❤ what kind of watermaker have you decide to install?
Enjoyable video but a tad rushed.😉 Would like to see more of Photon Infinity in action. A side question. I have an option on a JPK39FC but also been considering an Arcona 385 or X 4.0. Not sure which other sailboats you considered in your search before you decided on your JPK but would appreciate your advice and how satisfied you are with your decision. Note, I also intend to do some solo trips. Many thanks!
@@albertofourie3294 It’s JPK all the way for us. The last boat was also a JPK - 1010. Incidentally a great cruising boat as well as a top racer. JPKs are super short handed boats. The hull design and construction are excellent. The finishes like electronics / electrics / interior design are secondary considerations at the yard. So depends on your priorities. The 39fc is a serious sailing boat and very powerful. But it is stiff unlike many cruising boats, which can be very tender. We absolutely love sailing on this boat. If you are on the waiting list for one, then lucky you!! Thanks also for feedback on the videos. We have no experience with social media or filmmaking. We try to keep videos short so that the pain watching isn’t unnecessarily prolonged. But we hope that sharing some of our experiences are informative and interesting idea stimulators for others. Any specific feedback on how to improve the quality always gratefully received!
@@PhiSailing Many thanks for your informative reply. Decisions, decisions...🤔
@@albertofourie3294 Good luck. Let us know what you decide in the end …
Great to see a new video...been a while. Hugely watchable and informative as ever. What a boat! Merci bcp
@@richardhogarth440 Yes, we’re permanently behind finishing the next video. Difficult to make time with so much equipment drama to be sorted, and enjoying the odd day sailing 😉 As ever, the hope is to publish more frequently. You never know… thank you for bearing with us and for watching 😎⛵️
Another great video - Thanks! Enjoy the adventures on your circuit while I reconsider the wrapper idea for my boat (J/97) but I am sure following you on this channel and insta will provide inspiration for alternative plans
@@J97-Morena Good luck with your wrapper design. We still think wrapper is the way to go. Our experience is don’t go for custom printed. Just a standard material for the whole boat with a custom image separately applied on top. That works so much better for us now. New video on just the wrapper hopefully published in a couple of weeks. (Anything you’d like to see covered in it??)
You two are just wonderful people 🥰 and it was a great pleasure to meet you at the TIWAL Cup 2024 in Port d'Arradon. Good luck on your tour ⛵ and thank you for taking us with you. 😎
@@frank-arneknoth2106 thanks for your comment. You are Mr TIWAL 😉 We’ve not sailed the Tackyon as much as we’d have liked. The weather has been too variable so far on this trip. Hope to weave some Tiwal footage into the forthcoming videos. Enjoy your summer sailing yours 😎⛵️🏖️
Seen all you r video's. Like it very much. Thanks. Our JPK 39 is launched next month.
How exciting! We saw your boat in the JPK factory this week. It’s definitely worth the long wait 😁
As a pro "wrapper" Id say Avery Supreme is a very good choise of material. Make sure you get the overlaps and bottom edge sealed. Love the JPK designs. And that inflatable dingy looks like a blast!!
Thanks for the tips. New wrapper is on and looks awesome. Fingers crossed it’ll stick with no further issues. Definitely would use a wrapper over paint / plain hull again any day. And you’re spot on: the Tiwal is a wheeze! 😎⛵️
Great video. I noticed you use the v berth for storage. Innovative. Sorry to hear about the b&g.
Cyclops! Nice to hear from you. We need to fly the spi and zero from the fore hatch, otherwise the sails don’t fit through the cabin 😅 Plus the rear berth is cosier for cups of tea in the morning.
@@PhiSailing That is cool. Very racer like. I have to partially unpack the spinnaker to get it out of the equipment room. The code is a wrestling match to get on deck solo.
@@svcyclops Yes that sounds just like the struggle we’re avoiding by simply flying everything straight out of the front hatch. Maybe it’s time for a cabin move this season..? 😉
Awesome videos! Keep them coming⛵️🤘
Cheers DP 😁❤
Great to see you guys back on this channel. Have a safe and fun trip!
Thanks! 🤩 We’re hoping to post updates a bit more frequently from now on..
What a beautiful sea, light and landcape! My garden!
We love it too, Philippe. We’ve just done the same journey again in reverse: Guernsey - Kerneval. And the French coastline never ceases to amaze. And the short choppy French seas never cease to annoy!! 😅
Great to see so many JPKs together 🙂
Yes it was amazing - so many great boats and passion, and so much sailing talent.
Great to see you guys in action again. Fantastic event!
Thanks Richard. We're hoping to improve on release date intervals... been a busy summer cruising in the Baltic, and we're currently planning our Atlantic Circuit starting in the Spring. Watch this space! :)
No amount of wrapper will ever replace quality paint !
An immensely pleasant channel. Thank you for the lovely content.
My zincs on the Gori prop disappear quickly. The small one at the tip lasts about 2 months. I did a continuity test to make sure the prop is electrically connected to both anodes.
No Instagram…
Ah, shame. We braved ‘Insta’ a few weeks ago for the first time. It’s a bit of an alien world. But easier to keep up to date with our travels, trials, and occasional tribulations. We’ll keep up UA-cam, but it’s taking a bit of time to make videos and we’re quite behind. Spending lots of time sailing instead 😊
Hi there. What make and model is that cool 2-seater at 0:17 minutes?? thanks
Love your style. It’s a “Quest Bordeaux Pro Double Snug”. Must have accessory for any boat. Only possible flaw is it doesn’t have drinks holders.
Thanks for update…….I’m ‘in-between’ boats at the moment and I appreciate your honesty and holding the manufacturer to account for defects on a new boat! It’s important that we don’t accept second best after all that money lashed out !
Glad you like the videos, Mike. We’ve found that any problems are with the ancillaries not the design/structure itself (which is excellent 😊). Yes it’s frustrating when issues arise from workmanship that should be better. We’re trying to be fair - JPK is an amazing brand - any issues we’ve experienced have been mainly with outsourced suppliers or where JPK dabble outside of their core skills. For example fitting electronics might be better left to Teems as in the distant past. But overall it’s all part of the trials and tribulations of getting to grips with a new boat. 😁 Good luck finding your new perfect boat soon. (Whichever you choose: get on the waiting list soonest!)
Nice to see a video again ! Could you do a video where you elaborate the pros and cons so far experienced with the JPK 39 ? Such as is the carbon stick really worth, having planing capability a benefit vs handling in rough seas, payload sensitivity (does it still plane with like 6-10 person aboard) and so on ?
Thanks John - glad you’re still with us 😊 It’s a good idea. We’re just doing the video on the JPK Cup which lends itself for a critique of the boat design. Spoiler alert: it’s likely to be very positive (and the carbon stick definitely necessary and worth it 😉!) and we’ll include some items on the boat design and handling we’ve found interesting and different from other boats we’ve sailed, especially the 1010. We don’t find the planing design compromises handling in rough seas, which is pretty good, especially down wind. We’re mostly sailing 2 or 3 up, so not sure what it’ll be like with 6-10. But it is a powerful rig and we’d anticipate sparkling performance fully crewed. Also we did have 22 below deck for a party once alongside, and the boat performed pretty well then 😎
great video. we should compare notes on the watt sea performance. Do you have a relay for the watt and sea? or an amp meter?
We are headed to guernsey at the end of July. Are you in town?
Cyclops! Delighted to hear you’re heading to the Channel Islands. Alas, we’ll miss you. We’re on our way to Hamburg and then onwards to the German Baltic and Denmark for the summer. Make sure to call into the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club in Guernsey on a Friday night and say you’re a friend of ours. Or ask for Julian - he’s also a big fan of your channel. Have a great trip across and enjoy Guernsey when you get there.
@@PhiSailing Shucks... are you part of the what's app for jpk 38/39?
@@svcyclops Not yet! Could you send us details to PhiSailing39X@gmail.com?
Thanks for the video. It's an interesting boat, having raced and cruised J's, I know the joy and flexibility derived from good handling and speed. Whilst I admired the smaller JPK's they seemed a little small for cruising and carrying some comforts.
Hi guys following you since day one! if you ever have the chance to bench mark the JPK 39 against a Pogo 36 let us know! would be an interesting comparison. Also any improvement in performance with the 3DI vs the original canvas? I m under the impression that the 3DI is too stiff to handle and would fatigue early....
There was a Pogo in Guernsey before we got the 39. It seemed to struggle upwind compared with other boats. (Perhaps it wasn’t perfectly sailed… 😉) As for the sails, the Technique Voile cloth was Prestige Upwind Contender Pro-Hybrid. It’s much stiffer than Dacron, and probably stiffer than the 3DI. We had 3DI sails on the previous boat and never had any fatigue problems. The material is extremely rugged (bullet proof) and still winning races for its new owner. The North 3DI we have for the boat are just brilliant 😎 (if a little pricey).
You two are great and keep focusing on the actual sailing. Good luck at the JPK Cup and really looking forward to seeing your exploits. Always aiming for a Pogo but you are starting to convince me JPK. Is the way to go
😁 many thanks Richard. It’s a definite JPK all round bias from us.
Nice music and great sailing
English is not my mother tongue. Nevertheless I am comfortable speaking it, except when I watch your video. I only understand half of what you say. I watch them anyway.
Hi guys nice boat, and some good boat speed. A question on jib sizes, we have recently purchased a new MAT 1070 and looking at jib sizes, what are your jib sizes for the No1, No2 and No3, if you don't mind me asking. Thanks
Without Richie insisting on having the Carbon Stick, Atalanta might have had you🤭 ... but you flew home ... bye bye Atalanta!
Love the technical terminology - "its knackered the gasket" 😬 How did you fix the autopilot?
Love your video's. May I ask why you choise was B&G?
Hi Piet, we had NKE on the last boat and found the software “clunky” and displays of poor quality and not easily readable in daylight. Also we had a B&G chart plotter and NKE struggled to communicate with that properly. So on balance we’d go B&G again, despite our teething problems with it. Thanks for asking!
@@PhiSailing 1. Do you know if you had the same problem as the B&G pilot of Cyclops? They had an issue as well. So two times in series? 2. I Agree with ou about the NKE display quality, but I have little bit more believe in the pilot itself (I could be wrong). What do you think? We are listed for JPK#19 and are happy with advice.
Exciting you're on the list! Very happy to share some of our experience as there's so much to consider when specking your boat. On 1: Cyclops we think had update issues. Our Triton problem was a well known mechanical one requiring an update. It was then perpetuated by a number of re-installation issues which could have been avoided by a B&G specialist. So in both cases, had JPK updated the plotters before installing, there would have been fewer problems. In both cases they also turned a carefully engineered watertight gasket into a mess by using silicone when none required. Our advice would be to get Teems to supervise the installation and update as necessary. On 2: We would choose B&G again especially now we understand it a bit more. It's powerful and has a multitude of functions that can cause problems because engaging them is easily accessible to the amateur owner. NKE doesn't allow that, which avoids many operator error issues. The factory is very keen on NKE, guess all French are!
@@PhiSailing OK. Thanks for the answers.
Still happy with the boat ? Why do you guys not fly the red ensign or is it special to Guernsey ?
Boat is still Ab-Fab, John! We fly a blue ensign as members of a Royal yacht club. The blue ensigns are defaced according to which Club you belong to. In the Channel Islands we have tree lions and a crown. We could also fly a red duster, defaced in Guernsey with a golden Norman Cross from Guillaume le Conquérant.
What a great boat! 7-8kn tackling in 20 kn 👍
Great to see! All best wishes. Live life living!
What fun! I will send you some warm air from Florida!
Thank you, Cyclops. When are you reunited with your boat?
@@PhiSailing June 1 I am hoping to splash the boat.
Loving these videos! Keep up the good work!
Thanks Alex. Nice spi footage of KT coming up in the next episode.
@@PhiSailing Ohh that's very exciting! Hopefully we will capture some footage of Photon Infinity soon, but I'm about a year behind with uploading videos, so it might be a while before it makes it to UA-cam!
Gidday from the land down under. That's a ripper of a boat! Would love to get more details - is there any way of getting in touch? Looking forward to the next video😁
Another great episode
Cyclops ... I've watched your vid's too ... love the swing keel. Any way to make contact with you too?
Music is terrible. I mean it's all bad. I hope you can find an editor that has better taste. It matters.
Guys ... we need more ! ... 🙂
like the look of those new triradial sails - would you be kind enough to identify the cloth.
Where is the Bow Thruster? For the life of me I cannot identify on the hull?
Bow thruster is very neat. They did a good job faring it in. You can just see the retractable flap on the centre line. Once we worked out how to switch it on, it's pretty handy, too.
Nice machine I'm surprised the warp did not survive the Journey! I think I'll stick to paint!
We were unlucky there for sure. But Atelier Sur Mer are on the case and will fix it... as soon as the consistent gales over Guernsey permit them to come over!
Wrappers are good in principle. More cost effective than a paint job, and when you remove the wrapper the gel coat is as new.
I wish you a lot of success on your channel!! If I was you I would employ P R O M O S M!!
