I hitched across Iran from Pakistan to Turkey in 1992. It was a wonderful interesting and friendly place. What a pity it does not make use of its tourist potential. When they get a decent government I'd love to go again.

Although this was not Iran, it was nearby: in 2018 a young couple trying to prove human kindness in the middle-east killed by ISIS. Like you, they went bicycling together. Their trip started in July 2017 and took them from South Africa through Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Malawi to Tanzania, from where they flew through Egypt to Morocco. The couple then rode along much of the European Mediterranean shoreline and from Istanbul, Turkey, flew to Central Asia. From there, Austin and Geogehan (their names) were planning to continue toward eastern Asia, Australia and South America. At some point in their journey, their blog went silent. Later ISIS claimed responsibility for killing them.

Iran is marked in red because they have a track record of arresting Westerners and jailing them. If you forgot, in 2023 five Westerners were prisoner swapped for Iranians in detention. The 5 were arrested years ago while in Iran doing environmental research, typical zoological surveys, and another was there on business. They were tortured and kept imprisoned for many years. There was another case of a Washington Post reporter also jailed for a couple years. And a few years earlier another girl hiking near Iran was arrested for over a year. And any woman not wearing a hijab is subject to arrest as well, - in the case of some, death like Mahsa Amini. Ask any Iranian expats: very often they have stories of their parents or relatives being arrested, tortured, and murdered for fake reasons by Iranian secret police. So yes, if you jump off a cliff, you may not die, but you are much closer to that negative reality. Luck is not the same as being smart. That being said, the Persian people themselves are wonderful, and it is a beautiful country. However, given the current geopolitical state of Iran and its "investments" being under attack, the police are likely on high alert, and it would be foolish to tempt fate against that history and reality. In fact, I now just recall reading about another blogger, a British woman, who did something similar to you, bicycling through that area recently, and she got raped. And blogged about it.
