The best local extra virgin olive oil in Croatia is currently 20-25 euros
For a half liter...? It is well worth it. Very good oils in Croatia.
@@matteotroncone for a liter
@@fidemclam Even better! Life is too short to eat bad oil.
@@matteotroncone Yeah...last week I picked olive trees and from 14 trees I got 290 kg, from which I got 33 liters of olive oil. It will be enough until next year.
That Toscano is soooooooo damn good and peppery. They feature several regions . I saw another a Italian one on sale right now in a yellow orange bottle. One of the reasons to have a Costco membership. Another reason to have it is the Parmeggiano and Romano cheeses.
Best instructional video-thx how u break this down.
Thank you SO much. I REALLY need to make more videos. In fact. I might do one today, thanks to your kind words. Cheers!
Yuppee
Sorry boss.I as a foreign person was lost in the subtle local scenario.Any idea if they ship to India or link where they ship to other countries.
I looked to see if Costco, which has stores in Europe, Australia, the UK, and Canada as well, carries this oil online, and I don't see it. In India, you might try to find an oil from Australia. They make a LOT of crap oils. BUT, they also make some very fine organic artisinal estate oils.
@@matteotroncone thank you so much
@@ulary Wish I could be of more help. The Toscano is the BEST oil one can find in the States for the money. There are many better oils out there, but youi will pay at least double or triple in price. olive oil to me is a way of life. I use high quality oils every day. From Whole Foods, (owned by Amazon) try Bono Organic. Exceptoinal oil but it is $40 per liter in California. Buon appetito , m
First are you still around? And if you are how does this oil compare to "Dr. Gundry’s Polyphenol Rich" olive oil when it comes to the Polyphenol's? Thank you if you are still around. Olive Oil!
I am still alive and respond to every comment on UA-cam if UA-cam allows me to. I plan on making more videos but have not had the time. yet I have 3-4 to shoot. Regarding Gundry, his oil is RIDICULOUSLY expensive, yet very good. Toscano is the best oil I have ever had in the U.S. for the money, Full Stop. Is it as good as Gundrys exhoirbitant oil? No. Yet is is very good. But, if you go to Whole Foods for example you can find a favorite oil of mine for $22 for 500ml - or $44 a liter. Toscano is now $18 a liter. You get what you pay for.
It was 3 years ago now $25 for 2 liter plastic bottle is way fake
I dont know what you are referring to. Toscsno is in glass bottles, is now $18 per liter, is estate grown, p.g.i. and assuredly not fake. Anything else in plastic that Costco sells is 100% rubbish. That is certain.
In Az we have the Queen Creek Olive Mill. Is this good oil?
Is this the one in Clarkdale?
@@matteotronconeNo, it's in Queen Creek, Arizona
@@cherylwilliams4738 If it taste fresh, grassy, green, spicy. pepperey and you enjoy the flavor, then buon appetito!

I will do another video shortly abou tmy favs. It also depends where you are and what markets you have. In California wer have a huge variety of stores, and oils. I am hoping to start shoting more video in a few weeks once I get settled.
Im in Arizona and I'm desperately trying to find this exact oil? Seems they don't carry it anymore? Any suggestions?
Best to call the Costco in Phoenix, Prescott or Tucson; wherever you are. They should tell you if they have it. My local Costco still has it - now $18 for a liter, yet still VERY much the best deal for the money in the states, ever.
@@matteotroncone So does it vary from city to city and or state to state, what Costco carries?
@@cherylwilliams4738 Evidenyely it does indeed. In Northen California for intance, there is a high market for this stupendous oil. it always sells out. People here are easily willing to pay a tiny bit more for quality. As I said, the best thing to do is call cutomer service and they will tell you where this oil is in stock.
@@cherylwilliams4738 It does seem so. In fact, in SLO Costco they have Toscano. In Marin County, no. But go to Sonoma County just North, and they have a pallette of it. I usually buy it all at once and store it for the year, until the new harvest comes in. For the money, you will NEVER find a better oil at $18 per liter.
34$ Canadian i find the 100 % Italian has that burn in your throat the organic one come from a mix of 10 different countries not so good
Indeed. The burning in the back of the throat is a big indicastion that the oil is fresh, has tannins, tocherpherol, and polyphenols ; all medicinal properties of a high quality fresh olive oil. ANY oil that uses olives from many countries is to be avoided. This is typcially called a "Mediterranean Blend" and is a big red flag that the oil is low quality, if not originating from rancid, old, and unknown varietals. 34 Canadian is equilvilent to about $25 dollars, $7 more than in the States. This might have to do with VAT ot some sort of Tarriff or Shipping cost.
How you determine the is good compared to extra virgin
All good oils are extra virgin, but not all extra virgin oils are good. A quality olive oil is always bottled in a dark glass bottle, is estate grown, preferably d.o.p. or p.g.i., has a harvest date, and lists the varietals used. The Toscano from Costco is hands down the best olive oil you can get in the States, for the money. You will NEVER find as good an oil for that price. At $15 per liter, it cannot be beat. The rubbish oils that Costco has that are half the price are all packed in plastic. It is IMPOSSIBLE to produce a decent quality Olive oil for that price. Impossible. To make a real oil, it is labor intensive. So plastic jugs are a sure fire sign that it is a chemically refined "lamp oil", might be extra virgin, but the olives are rotten and rancid, and contains olives form ALL OVER the world, and often contain artificial coloring and flavoring. Once you have a real, healthy , and medicinal oil, you will never go back and will spend the extra money for the real deal. Trust me, $15 ( now $18) per liter is nothing. I deserve quality and hope you feel that way too. In addition, I would much rather support real growers, who are actually harvesting the olives, rather than agribusiness, which is fast, cheap , and out of control.
It’s almost one year old. It was harvested and produced September 2023.
So, whats your point?
@@matteotroncone It’s fresh and new. It’s good deal. Thank you for the review and taste test. I got to know about this type of oils because of your educational videos.
@@abderrazak6122 Thank you for your kind words and support. Yes, not a bad deal at all. I do think Toscano at Costco is a much better oil of you can find it. I will be doing more videos and reviews soon. Most oil is harvested in October and November ( at least in Europe) so, usually you can buy that harvest in February or March the following year. I ALWAYs do my best to buy it asap, and store it in a dark cool or cold place to last the year and stay fresh. Buon appetito!
I recommend having a lab test these oils. Italy is run by gangs…I don,t accept anything they say My view
Mafia is EVERYWHERE in the world. EVERYWHERE. However, to say that the whole country cannot be trusted is just wrong, inaacuate and borders on a predudice that i don't care for. Italy has the best olive oil in the world. Full stop. But there is fraud there, and in Spain etc.. which is why I made these videos; s o one can tell the difference between fraud and stupendous medicinal oil.
I just purchased this upon seeing your review. I really hope it works out
I dont hope it will. i KNOW it will :) Let me know how you like it. For the money, you can't beat it.
Thank you very much for the informative video. This is the olive oil. I usually get from Costco, but last time my wife was there she got the 1 L glass bottle of organic extra-virgin olive oil and it was from California instead of Tuscany. Does anyone know if this is an equal, high-quality olive oil ?
You're quite welcome. Thanks for the comments. I can assure you, it will NOT be of equal value or quality. It will be ok. I have tasted these oils form Costco in the past, and they are adequete, bur nothing great, I do not believe them to be "lamp oil" yet they are ntohing like Toscano and higher, like Bono, De Carlo, Bellucci, or others. This oil is ok, and definitely a great oil to cook with.
not 14 now.
Never has been $14. It has been $15 for some years. If you read my comments, I predicted that the price would increase due to the drought in Italy, and rising costs to produce a labor intensive product. Still at $18, it is the BEST oil available in the States, for the money, no question.
The bottle you are showing in this video was made in 2020! Any Extra Virgin Olive Oil aged over 1 1/2 years is turning rancid!
The video is 3 years old. SO HOW could it have a current date?!?

So sad that you are that cynical. Costco is giving me nothing for this. I wish they would! I am simply a lover of olive oil and Truth.
Thank you 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for watching and for your kindness,
As a new accidental olive farmer in Portugal I appreciate your love and enthusiasm regarding olive oil. My first harvest resulted in 37.3 liters of very tasty oil and very sore arms!
Ciao Mark! I very much appreciate your kind words of understanding and acknowledgment. Once you have had the real deal, there's no turning back. 37 liters is a LOT of oil. Even I couldn't eat that much in an entire year....Well actually.... :) I find the harvesting process, actually the entire process, to be so incredible beautiful and soul- fulfilling. Good on you. Here's to happy accidents. "Discovery is greater than invention".
I don’t think they have that variety any longer. I did buy their 100% Italian EVOO since it was recommended on another video, but it didn’t pass the refrigerator test. I returned it.
They have it at a Costco nearby - a whole pallet of it. I am stocking ups for the year as when the new harvest hits in April it will likely be much more expensive due to drought and harvesting issues. Best to call customer service to see which location near you has it. Worth it. You will NEVER find a higher quality oil in the u.s. for this price. Full stop.
Thanks. I checked their website and didn’t see it and I have not seen it at my local Costco. I tried another brand they sell, Tasso, but it doesn’t pass the taste test, (no burn in the throat), and did not pass the refrigerator test either. I’ll return it and look again for that one.
Consumer Reports say Costco oil rates a 2 out of 5. They are olive oil just not the best. California Olive Ranch at $16.50 for 25 oz is a best rated buy at Walmart. The Tuscano was not rated by Consumers.
I agree! Costco oil is rubbish. 90% of their oils are trash. Which is why I made the video, because Toscano is stupendous - hence the title "Costco FINALLY has a good oil". Toscano is exponentially better than California Ranch. which is semi-agribusiness on Highway 5 in Northern California. It's not lamp oil, yet it is definitely NOTHING special. Toscano is the best oil you will EVER find in the United States for $15 a liter. Full stop. p.s. I would Not buy olive oil at Walmart!
I would say the Organic version of that Olive oil is Just as good, its in a glass bottle as well
There is an Organic version of Toscano?!? I have never seen it. Please tell me where you bought it and feel free to include a photo. Cheers, m
This is my first ever extra virgin olive oil. I was looking for the Toscano since you spoke so highly of it. Unfortunatley it is not available at Costco on 12/22/2023. And the price went up a bit to $11.99 per bottle. I tried it, and I don't know if it's good or not since again that's my first ever olive oil. I just kinda dip it with the Costco baguette. If you have a bread that you would recommend to go with olive oil, that would be greatly appreciated. I also bought the Costco California extra virgin olive oil from Sacramento Valley that was recently harvested Fall 2023. I will try that one next to see which one I like more. Thanks for your reviews!
The Toscano is still available here in California. It is 14.99 per liter and has been that price for some years. You might call customer service and they can locate where the remaining bottles are, and if in your area. I would like to try the California Sacramento Valley oil. Yet, I HIGHLY doubt it will be as good as Toscano. But it still might be yummy, especially for a good price. I shall await your review. :) You generally get what you pay for with olive oil. At $15 per liter, you CANNOT go wrong with Toscano.
Cosco does not have the Oil anymore.
It does in certain locations. The store that I went to today has a large pallet still. Best to call customer service so they can tell you which location nearby has it.
Does any one know how much polyphenols the kirkland tuscano have? Everyone seems to bash all costco olive oils saying it will have low polyphenols just because its costco.
In terms of a chemical analysis of this particular oil, I don't know what the polyphenol content is. Yet I can assure you, it is high. You can taste it. If it is fresh, green,. bitter, spicy, and or peppery, it contains high levels. You will never find as high a quality oil in the States, for the money. Full stop.
what are your sources that the plastic Kirkland EVOO bottles are that bad? In fact, all the sources that I came across say the complete opposite of what you claim. Yes, they are not the best quality but good enough especially when compared to similarly priced EVOO on supermarket shelves.
ANYTHING in plastic is bad, because the oil leeches the microplastics into the oil. Moreover, ANY oil that is bottled in plastic is almost guaranteed to be rubbish. Si! I HIGHLY recommend DeCarlo. ALL of their products are excellent. They are from Puglia and have been in business since the 1600's! I like Foddi from Sardegna, Pornanino, and Centzone, Starec from Trieste, Bellucci. Shall I go on...?! In this video, you can find my recs. ua-cam.com/video/RTHl2KuZV0M/v-deo.html&t
At last we found a bottle of this at our local Costco. And yes, it's two things: Expensive & Delicious. Unfortunately, taste and quality come at a price. This tastes so good that I take a teaspoon by mouth every other day as a nutritional supplement. I tried the taste test: 2 prices of toast, one with the regular Costco Olive oil and one with this oil spread on it (instead of butter). The 1st was close to vile tasting. The 2nd was delicious. This IS a superior oil. We're buying this whenever we can find it which isn't always at Costco, alas.
I am pleased to hear that you like this oil. For the money, you will NEVER find anything of this caliber in the States; not for $15. I must however correct you. Yes it is delicious. But it is not expensive whatsoever. Quite the contrary. An oil of this quality would and should, by all standards, be selling for a MINIMUM of $30 per liter. I would say $45 to be honest. This is why I made this video. You can find other oils that are higher in quality, yet you will pay a LOT of money - $40-$90 a liter easily. Now if you are comparing $15 a liter to any lamp oil that Costco sells, it is double the price. Again, most oil worldwide - roughly 80% is rubbish lamp oil, bottled in plastic, chemically refined, and used with rotten, rancid olives from God knows where. Toscano is a p.g.i. - protected geographical Indication,. So you know exactly where it is coming from. I reckon next year this oil will be at least $3-$5 more per liter, so stock up! Buon Appetito.
Actually, you're right: it is not that expensive when you consider it (as you did) in comparison to other types of oil. However, at Costco it is roughly twice as expensive as their plastic-bottled olive oil that we use for cooking. Since olive oil is used in about 90% of our cooking, that's a good amount of oil I wish we could find Toscano p.g.i. in more stores and in perhaps larger containers at better prices. I stand corrected as well as appreciative of your posts. @@matteotroncone
You get what you pay for generally. I would NEVER buy anything in plastic. Not only do the microplastics leech into the oil, plastic containers are a sure fire sign that the oil is rubbish. You CANNOT produce a quality oil for that price. Impossible. These agribusiness oils are chemically refined, often artificially colored and flavored, have no varietals listed because they don't know, And... perhaps most importantly, are made with rotten, rancid olives that are not harvested but left to fall to the ground and rot; then vacuumed up with a big machine and then chemically treated and refined to deodorize the oil. The is how it works, and why it is it so cheap. But we are deserving of much better. @@mic982
Yeah honestly not expensive at all 15 dollars for a liter of very high quality of olive oil for 15 dollars? That’s a huge steal. You could probably go to Walmart and buy rancid olive oil for less volume and more expensive
@@ej1692 It becomes expensive when you use the oil like we do - for all of our cooking. I even use olive oil for a rub base to adhere the herbs and spices on my meats before I smoke them in the Smoker. A $15 bottle doesn't; last us very long.
Thank You for all the Good info I was looking for.
Thanks for the kind words.I need to make more videos and plan on it. In November I think I will have the time and space to do it.
Matteo, I just stumbled across your site, what do you think about the Brand Lucini Italia Special Edition Premium Select Extra Virgin Olive?
Ciao Mike, Lucini is a decent oil. It is widely available in the states which makes it attractive. For the money, I do think you can find better oils, but it is CERTAINLY not lamp oil. Since over 80$% of all oils are rubbish, Lucini is worth buying in my opinion. Buon appetito, m
I'd love to hear a review of the costco olive oil from Crete,
I would love to taste this one. I have never seen it at Costco actually. Where do you live?
What is your favorite organic extra virgin olive oil?
Please excuse the delay. I've been traveling. My favorite oil is De Carlo. De Carlo makes exceptional products, is in Puglia, and has been doing it for over 100 years. I also love Foddi from Sardegna, frantoiofoddi.it/en/ Pornanino from Chianti - Super Organic pornanino.com/extra-virgin-olive-oil/ Bellucci - p.g.i. from Sicily, Organic. Agrumí - Sicily. Centonze - On the Presidio of Slow Food. Bio. Olive from the Raw - Organic. Just because it says Organic doesnt mean it's a good oil. There are TONS (literally) of Organic oils out there that are rubbish lamp oils. And, in Italy, even if it's organic, you are still allowed traces of pesticides due to fruit flies and climate change. ua-cam.com/video/ejEsOZGKEFM/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/RTHl2KuZV0M/v-deo.html&t
How do you determine how good the oils are? Do you examine them in a laboratory?
If I don't know the brand or estate/farm, I study the label. I look for estate grown, an acidity level of less than .5, is it d.o.p. or p.g.i., and what are the varietals, and when was it harvested. After that, it is all about tasting the oil.
@matteotroncone Some of the claims you make in this video seem to be dubious at best. Claiming with certainty that these Costco oils are all "rubbish" and are all "chemically refined" simply by tasting them seems a little far-fetched. I also researched your claim that so-called "chemically refined" oils become acidic and cause inflammation, and there seems to be nothing to support this claim. These oils are all labeled as Extra Virgin Olive Oil, not as pomace olive oil. Do you have any evidence to the contrary? I am well aware that some oils on the market have been found to be fake, but are you saying that Costco-sourced oils fall into that category? I find that difficult to believe, especially if your only evidence is by way of tasting and reading labels.
@@MrSmcara As I said, it is not simply by tasting them. " If I don't know the brand or estate/farm, I study the label. I look for estate grown, an acidity level of less than .5, is it d.o.p. or p.g.i., and what are the varietals, and when was it harvested. After that, it is all about tasting the oil." ANY oil in plastic is going to be rubbish. Any oil that is that cheap is going to be refined and include heat extraction, chemical refining process, artificial color and flavor. The fact is, and you can look it up, that 82% of ALL olive oil world wide is "lamp oil, often even if it says Organic. If you do some research, which would include watching this video, ua-cam.com/video/ejEsOZGKEFM/v-deo.html you will discover this to be more than correct. Most olive oil sold in the world, ESPECIALLY at super markets is garbage; Costco, Whole Foods, Trader Joes included. I invite you to go to an olive oil dispensary to taste for yourself. Once you taste a real oil, you might not want to continue ingesting lamp oils.
I placed KIRKLAND EVOO into the refrigerator for two days, and what happened? NOTHING! So, something is wrong. How much did they pay your for this?
Ha ha ha. Putting an oil in the fridge is a good call but it doesn't necessarily have ANYTHING to do with the quality of the oil. I have found however that higher quality oils solidify slower. I don't know if that is indeed true but... But you also have the volume, density, temperature of the oil prior, other variables to consider. But this test is unimportant and your accusation is not true. Why would you think I was being paid by Costco? I wish! The best test is to taste it.
I buy Kirkland Signature Spanish extra virgin. Taste better than any Italian oils. Of course, there are better ones, hard to find in the USA. Even Carrabas, Italian restaurants use Spanish olive oils. Years ago Italy used to buy Spanish oils and bottled them as their own for much more money until they got caught, that has a lot to say about the excellent quality of Spanish olive oils. Tunisian oils are very good too.
I just binge watched all of your olive oil videos and while I thought I was knowledgeable you certainly corrected that. You called my carefully chosen Costco oils “lamp oil“ and I thought your lamp oil percentages were full of crap until I double checked them. I found your reviews to be very helpful and they changed the direction of my thinking. I realize that you haven’t posted any videos for a year but I think that you could create a popular channel entirely around olive oil reviews with a focus on the best ones available to the average shopper/beginning enthusiast. So I would strongly encourage you to find/review/explain the science of getting the best olive oils possible in a dedicated video channel. I will subscribe immediately. 🫒
Thanks of writing and for also seeing for yourself; the best test. I am willing to be wrong about this and other things in my life. And when we know better, we do better. My experience with harvesting olives in Chianti for my film Arrangiarsi (pizza...and the art of living) confirmed all of this and more. And when I toured the film until the pandemic, frequently in q&a's I would get questions about olive oil. So I decided to do some videos and spread the word, and also with the hopes of spreading the word about my film, hoping people would watch it as a result. That did not happen. And this is fine. I still want to make more videos about what to cook with, which oils to avoid, which ones to buy, how to identify quickly a lamp oil, and so forth. Yet life has taken a different turn and the time, space, and energy to do them has not been there in the last year. I do desire to pick up where I left off. And... I also have other interests that I want to make videos about. So I am a but confused what to do, since my other videos would be about photography, VW Vanagon restoration and how to take a shower in one, and also concert footage of artists I sometimes record in San Francisco.... I am not sure people wanting olive oil videos would want to see this....!
This is not available in every Costco.
True. Best to call customer service to find out which locations have it. They can tell you where and how many bottles are there; well worth the search. Stock up. Next year I reckon this oil will be $3-$5 more.
I love Novello because it's unfiltered. I have to try this one simply because it's under glass! I've never tried the Costco brand in plastic bottles because I just don't trust plastic bottles. Period.
Yes, ANYTHING in plastic is HIGHLY likely to be lamp oil and therefore rubbish; even if it says organic. I NEVER would buy anything in plastic. Not to mention that the micro plastics leech into the oil causing hormone disruption as well as a slew of other maladies. In my opinion, Toscano from Costco if you can find it, is 3 or 4 times the oil that Novello is. It is hands down the best oil, ( for the money) that one can get in the U.S. This years harvest is likely to be about 50% of normal, so next year expect to pay a lot more. Or stock up on Toscano now. Buon appetito,
P.D.O actually, lol
PDo is the same as d.o.p. In Italian it is written, Denominazione di Origine Protetta. Same same.
Hi, by coincidence I just opened a bottle of Costco’s Tuscano and had the first shot with some fresh lemon juice, AND happened upon your vid! I am a novice at this, but I certainly enjoyed it. First vid, new sub, Thank you!
Your liver and gallbladder will be very happy as well! Thanks for the kind words and for subscribing. Good on ya for buying and enjoying Toscano. For the money, you will never find a better oil in the States. Full Stop.
Hello again. so im going to splurge on the decarlo on amazon just to see how a real olive oil tastes like but have a couple questions. the best used by date of the current product is 10/23 , is this still ok? im sure i will use it by then but will it go past this date by a couple months you think if i still have some left? or do i wait till a newer batch comes out? also do i use this for like frying a cutlet, or is it to good and its only used for salads and bread? i do cook a couple things where i use a good bit of olive oil , like spaghetti and clams and just spaghetti with olive oil and garlic. i know i would use it for those dishes but curious if you would use it for frying too. thanks again
DeCarlo is one of my favorites undoubtedly. If the expiration date is 10/23, it is from the 2021 harvest, rather than last falls (2022). So it should be cheaper than a fresher oil. I don't know WHERE Amazon gets it, or how they store it... If you want DeCarlo, you might try Eataly.com - with stores in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Jose where you will likely get the 2022 harvest. I also try to buy the freshest and newest harvest of course, unless the prior years harvest is heavily discounted. A good oil like this, if stored properly can last 3-4 years PAST the expiration date believe it or not! I still have some Belucci that expired in 2020 and it is still good. These oils I would use for cooking. I need to make a video on this actually. If the oil is part of what will be a sauce, I would use a high quality oil. If you are just frying something or grilling something, then I would use a real olive oil, but certainly not DeCarlo - perhaps Novello from Trader Joes, or an expired high end oil. If you are a Costco member, I would of course buy the Toscano without reservation.
@@matteotroncone so I was really wanting the de carlo but also was interested in the Toscano. I was at work today, (have a small tile biz and do bath remodels) homeowners are out of town but the neighbor stopped in to see the work I was doing (I did their shower last year) they stayed for a while then said they were off to Costco. I said, oh your a member and she said, yes do you need something? I wrote down the name of the oil and a couple hours later she returned with a bottle!! Just weird how this worked out, meant to be....
@@fctazz Right on! For sure meant to be and you made it happen. Clearly they loved your shower work, and how nice of them to ask. So was it the 2022 harvest? What do you think? For the money I honestly dont think you will find a better oil in the States. Buon appetito and let me know how you like it.
@@matteotroncone yes its the 2022 harvest. I tasted it and compared it to a couple I have home which is a flora brand that says 100 percent italian and a cheaper philipi bero and the tuscana does tastes a bit fresher and slightly brighter. From all the talks, your video and a couple others, about these fake oils , I most likely have been buying fake oils forever so I thought that when I tasted the Toscano oil it would be totally different, like night a day but although I can tell its better, it is also similar. I can taste the difference in the raw but I dont think I could probably tell the difference to something cooked with the good oil vs the cheap oil.....
@@fctazz Hmmm. The Toscano I have had the last few years has been outstanding ly fresh, with grassy, green flavors , as well as pepper and spice at the finish. 82% of all olive oil world wide is lamp oil quality, no doubt. I invite you to taste a spoonful and see if that helps the cause. Cheers, m
thanks for the videos, really appreciate the info and will try some of your recommendations. i was wondering if you have tried partanna EVOO from Sicily or colavita 100 percent italian version? i havent actually tried either but just curious. i know the colavita is a basic supermarket brand but the 100 percent Italian version has harvest dates and all kinds of authentic stamps and such. the partanna oil seems like it has great reviews and was also curious if these could be freaken lamp oils...thank you
Ciao Frank, Thanks for writing and for the question. Colavita is, as you say, a supermarket oil and largely they make lamp oils, no doubt. They might make a higher end line but I am not a fan of theirs. Leonardo Colavita, the president of assitol, the olive-oil trade association, and the owner of Colavita, the olive-oil company, was indirectly involved with scandalous and fake oils. I am not saying he is corrupt, yet people who he has business dealings with certainly have been. I think it's better to avoid this oil. You can do so much better. There was a New Yorker article about this some years ago,. Partanna every one asks me about. It usually comes in a tin can and Walmart sells it. I have actually never tasted it, yet am skeptical of this oil for a few reasons; the other being that Starbucks which now serves olive oil in their coffee as an option has partnered with none other than Partanna as their supplier. I prefer to stick with smaller name brands that I know and trust , that are d.o.p or p.g.i. and are using traditional methods of cultivation, harvesting, and pressing and don't have to produce a volume for a Walmart or a Starbucks. Although Toscano is from Costco, I don't believe it is in every store, and once they run out, you have to wait until the next years harvest. The 2022 harvest is in one store near me at present but not in another once nearby. Buon appetito, m
In addition, I don't think this is a good thing for quality. And Colavita still allows mafia and corrupt and indicted oil companies to remain members of Assitol. "Assitol collaborated with the Italian Ministry of Agriculture on a proposal to create a “Mediterranean Axis of Olive Oil,” which a 2004 government document described as “an informal cartel of international dimensions among olive-oil producers.” According to Colavita, assitol’s president, the project was initiated by Gio-vanni Alemanno, the agriculture minister from 2001 to 2006, and would be financed by the Italian government. The goal, he said, was to expand olive-oil production in Syria, Morocco, Turkey, and other southern Mediterranean countries outside the E.U., and to facilitate the sale of the oil in Italy, using a duty-free storage facility in a southern Italian port."
I'd Really appreciate an explanation on why Costco's Organic Extra Virgin Olive oil isn't any good. That's contrary to many other people's reviews. Thanks a lot
In my experience, Costco sells a LOT of rubbish lamp oils - oils that are chemically refined, highly processed, heat extracted, and stored in plastic bottles. These oils are actually unhealthy and do more harm than good. In fact , there is nothing good about them. This is the mainstay at this store, and most supermarkets. There are a few exceptions occasionally, which is why I made the video. Americans generally love a good bargain and seem to love Costco. Their California oil from the Cuyama Valley I reviewed and I had to take it back as it was rancid beyond belief; something I didn't understand as it was freshly harvested. The Toscano featured in this video is clearly exceptional and quite a discovery at $14 a liter. I highly recommend it. It is now $15 per liter. ANYTHING in plastic is going to be rubbish. In my other videos I explain that just because its organic doesn't mean it is good if they are using rancid, rotten olives that are not traceable, shipped from all over the world, and have no varital information or harvest date. these are ALL signs to stay away from 85% of all olive oils. I believe that it's explained in this video: ua-cam.com/video/ejEsOZGKEFM/v-deo.html Buon Appetito!
NO oil stored in plastic is worth buying; What they call "lamp oil"; chemically refined, deodorized with petrochemicals, and also extracted with heat and solvents. In addition they are adding artificial flavor and color. Just because the oil is organic doesn't mean much at all. And the same goes for extra virgin. To meet it extra virgin requirement, they are lowering the acidity chemically. So this is NOT a real, true, authentic, medicinal oil. It might be from 100% olives but that is it. It is a very LOW bar to meet. Instead, I HIGHLY recommend buying Toscano that is P.G.I. or a D.O.P. oil which is light years ahead in terms of flavor, quality, and farming practices; and ones that do not contain artificial additives, were not chemically refined, deodorized, and have no trace of solvents being used in this horrible practice.
@@matteotroncone Thanks so Much for taking Your time to explain. I've been buying Extra virgin olive oil at Costco for a few years. For several weeks I've been taking two spoons with half a lemon before My first meal of the day. Your videos have opened My eyes to due further research. I will no longer buy Costco's extra virgin olive oil. I'll spend a few more dollars to buy a higher quality oil to eat with lemon. Thanks so Much Matteo.
@@antonioriveraarguello You generally get what you pay for. But usually by spending just a few dollars more, you will get something medicinal, healthy , and tasty. I always look for green, grassy, peppery, spicy, and bitter to tell if the oil is real and fresh. The more of these qualities, the better the oil. The lamp oil at Costco and MANY other places is basically a neutral greasy fluid that is made fit for human consumption by the deodorizing process. Then, they add the fake flavor. But it is dead for sure. A real olive oil is fresh fruit juice and tastes alive and vibrant. Avoid brands that are in plastic and names such as Star, Monini, Bertolli, DeCecco, and anything that says Mediterranean blend, even if organic. Hope you like the Toscano. The new harvest is in and it's still only $15 - a total steal.
You seem very knowledgeable, I'm going to have to check out that Tuscany Olive Oil. What are your thoughts on the Carapelli Unfiltered Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, 1L at Costco for $12? And how do you know that the rest of Costco Kirkland brand oils use chemical and heat extraction?
Thanks for your kind words. Olive oil is a passion of mine and I go through at LEAST one liter per month. The new 2022 harvest of the Toscano oil is out and in Costco shelves now. You will NOT find a better oil for the money. Full stop. Carapelli oil is ok, but not great and to be honest certainly not in the same league at Toscano. I would spend a few dollars more and go with the Toscano for sure. Carapelli oil is derived from SEVERAL sources around the Mediterranean, so there is no way to know the varietals, the condition of the olives and the mix of the oil and how they were cultivated or harvested. And I assure you, if they are getting olives or oil from around the Mediterranean, they are only doing it for one reason. It's cheap. Just because it is organic doesn't mean it is a good oil either. There are MANY organic lamp coils out there. Costco has many. A good practice is always to look for an oil that is estate grown, lists the harvest date, the varietals of olives, d.o.p. or P.G.I. and is in a dark glass bottle. Toscano meets all of this criteria except one; the varietals are not listed. But, knowing that is is a p.g.i. oil from Tuscany you are all but guaranteed that is is the traditional mix from Tuscany of 4 varietals; Moraiolo, Pendolino, Leccino, and Frantoio. P.G.I. is a green flag that the oil is quality. Buon appetito, m
I buy KIRKLAND but it says 'Signature", is it good?.
No, ONLY buy Kirkland Toscano. The rest of their oils are rubbish. You can still find it at certain Costco locations. Buon appetito, m
